  • Hey! I've got a briggs and stratton 5hp too and it's hasn't been used in a long time. there's old fuel etc in the gas tank and I need to clean it out so I was just wondering what you did to give yours a clean? Thanks!

  • @Canucks44Life What I did first was take the fuel tank off the engine and remove the carb from it. I cant remember if I was able to do it and leave the carb on the engine or not. Once you get the tank and carb apart, I drained the fuel out. Flushed it with some fresh gas, let it soak, drained that out and sprayed some carb cleaner inside to loosen the gum if there was any. Mine was rusted so I had a lot more. Might want to clean the carb and the pickip tubes also.

  • You need to turn your idle screw up I race 5hp B&S engines and I've had that idle problem before but don't turn it to much or it will take off when u start it

  • @kris24rocks Good point, I wasnt thinking too clearly that day lol. If the engine wasnt stolen from me, I would have had it going.

  • thx

  • hello i think i have the same go kart engine and it will not idle and runs very rough was wandering what the tube was for that ran from the rods to the carb. thanks- redneckfarms & trevzman

  • @Redneckfarms That tube that runs from the side of the engine to the carb, usually with a rubber boot at the end is a crank case breather. The older engines just had a vent on the side. The carb could need a good cleaning and possibly a rebuild. This one does have a diaphragm in it that can get hard especially with ethanol gas. I believe they are called pulse-a-jet carbs.....

  • adjust the Air/fuel mixture screw till it idles steady. should be fine after that.

  • @927Adam That is one of the first things I tried, but I found the end of the screw had the needle broken off. Im surprised it ran at all lol... Wish I still had it, got stolen with all my other engines.

  • @More350Power oh man, that sucks. but i hope my suggestion will help u in the future. i had the same problem with mine. if you have any problems with other engines in the future don't hesitate to ask me. Have a good one.

  • @927Adam Thanks, appreciate it!

  • cool, im currently building a 5hp briggs for my mini bike.

  • @pivotboy63 They are great engines. A little work with this one, it would have been fine and it sounded great. I wish I still had it.... ( someone stole it along with my other three engines )...

  • That reminds me of the go cart that I rode as a kid. One time the clutch locked up just when I was stepping onto it. It drug me and burned my leg.

  • @stopglobalswarming I rode another go cart like that where the clutch siezed and smoked the belt..... luckily I was able to face it uphill. I tore it apart, cleaned, polished and greased the internals and it was fine until it got stolen alone with this one in the vid... Thanks for watching!

  • @More350Power that must suck... (mustve been ass holes who wanted to blow a engine that wasnt theirs)

  • mine cant idle.....

  • @seelder It could be what this needed, a good thorough carb cleaning ( which I didnt do ) and/or a governor spring... I never, ever expected this thing to even as much fire once, but it did!

  • @More350Power gota love a briggs!!

  • @seelder Heck yea! Considering this engine wouldnt ever turn over as bad as it was siezed with no oil in it, left in the rain for who knows how long..... I wish I still had it

  • @mydadschallenger you should see my 1974 briggs 2 hp runns perfectly

  • @mydadschallenger Thanks, just needed the carb rebuilt...... but it had gotten stolen. Wish I still had it!

  • WHOA! I have the same engine!!

  • @GlitchGuyProductions Its a good engine, sounds mean when you revv it up. I wish I still had this engine, it got stolen....... along with a few others.

  • @More350Power

Yep. That sucks that it got stolen.

  • i hav a similar problem. i bought a briggs and stratton a few weeks ago attached to a sears chipper/shredder. It will start up with ingiter fluid in the air intake but i have to keep sprayin it to keep it alive. Also, on 3 occasions the engine has made a super loud screeching noise that sounds like someone screamin as lound as they can in your ear and i hav jst pulled out the spark plug for fear the engine is gonna blow or sumthing. I recently pulled the engine free of the chipper. wat now?

  • @jazarraonandia Sounds like the fuel pickup tube, or the carb itself is plugged up. I had to tear the fuel tank off, clean that out real good and spray some carb cleaner through this to get it to even run on its own. The screeching sounds like the starter clutch. Take off the engine shroud and you should see a square shaft type deal going into a cup holding the flywheel in place. There should be a hole in the end of the square shaft, put a few drops of oil or spray wd40 in there, should work

  • @jazarraonandia screeching is the pull starter clutch bearins replace them dont forget to put multipurpose greese in there..........clean inlet tube (the tube in the tank that sucks the fuel upp)......spray carb cleaner in itand let soak ....folowed by compressed air......i had a 3hp briggs tiller that did the same thing i just kep spraying the crap out of it with wd-40 to stop screeching....but only works tempararealy

  • @jazarraonandia same thing has hapend to me. take off the shroud and i just took apart the starter clutch and cleanded everything. and also. check your flywheel key. and make sure you dont loose the bearings in the clutch. and dont leave it out in the elements if possible. and i would try to find another carb. i got a carb of a honda lwn mower.. oh boy does it make a difference. its alot louder too.

  • hey i have the same motor and i think from just about the same year, and im trying to figure out what size clutch i need??

  • @adog8 I think its a 3/4 inch shaft, but dont quote me on that..... there is also 5/8". 1/2" and 1 inch. I just measured the diameter with a ruler, there arent too many sizes for those.

  • help what is the name of the cart

  • Help! I have this same problem... II changed the oil, spark plug, and air filter... I cleaned the carb and your '82 model works better than my '98 model... Can you help? It'll run for about 2 seconds then when i rev it it cuts off!

  • @Mijaycapri79 It sounds like its not getting enough fuel or it could be running too rich.......do you have any pics or vids of it? If I can see it and the kind of carb on it, I have a few ideas that might help!

  • @More350Power I'll get it to you as soon as I get my new exhaust. probably like monday or so...

  • the flap governor inside keeps blowing back and forth cause your spring is messed up or missing on the carb. It does not need a carb, just to be set right.////

  • great! well thank you for your help, I guess i'll be searching for a new engine

  • i told apart my engine today, no rings were damaged and when i put it back together and started there was a little smoke but not for long

then i have it gas and everything was good until i reved it almost full speed. oil shot into the chamber under where the air filter goes, what does this mean?

  • @UpstateVideos The oil most likely came from the crankcase breather. Usually this happens when there is internal damage to the engines ( rings, piston, cylinder, valves, valve guides) Basically it is called blowback. Now, if you did not set the rings to where the gaps or the ends not sure what to call them.... you want to make sure the ring splits are about 30 degrees or so staggered from each other. You really wont see if the rings are bad per say, but as cheap as they are id change them.

  • @UpstateVideos Either way, if its getting oil into the air cleaner, carb, or coming out of the breather pipe in my vid its disconnected from the carb. Its usually a sign of internal damage or something not set correctly.

  • @UpstateVideos maybe too much oil in the sump

  • @UpstateVideos did you gap the rings ?????

  • nice cart!!!!comment my cart!!!!!!!!!!

  • hey can you please help me, i'm 15 I have what looks like the same engine on my homemade go kart. except it has an oil leak, last night, I ran dry of oil and two shots of fire came out of the exhaust. once refilling the oil now whenever i start it white smoke comes out of the exhaust.

do you know what to do about this? please help

  • @UpstateVideos Most likely what happened, depending on how long you ran it without oil.... is you have damaged your piston rings for sure, you could have a scored cylinder wall & piston as well. That whiteish sometimes blue smoke is your engine just chucking the oil into the cylinder and burning it. You can, you can try a heavier oil like 10w40 or ive even gone into 20w50 and gear lube which is 75w90 or something like that in really BAD cases. I only used gear lube cause I knew the engine....

  • @More350Power was done for and I got tired of dumping a quart of oil in every 45 minutes. Depending on how long you ran it without oil (1) and depending on how long you ran it smoking like it was after (2) determines how bad the damage is. Im not sure if your engine is a cast iron sleeve cylinder or not. You are probably going to wanna tear it down, atleast pop the head off to see if the cylinder walls are scored, if they arent then a new set of rings should help some.

  • @More350Power have you been inside this engine? how hard would it be to replace the piston rings? It was ran without oil for less then a minute, or it started showing symptoms of no oil for less than a minute.

  • love the PING they make right after you start. reminds me of my first go-kart, briggs 5 hp fun power motor,

  • @hondaforlife001 These engines are awesome....... this one was actually siezed due to sitting with no oil in it but it does run now! Thanks!

  • i bought a 1985 5hp briggs that was left out in the rain for 2 years with no airfilter and spark plug for 15 bucks and got it running

  • dude you are missing the breather tube for the valves which goes to the carb .

  • Definitely was missing it in the vid. I found the air filter and beather recently. I was given the Karts and gave my buddy the engine. Engine is fine, but the carb/fuel tank/ were deteriorated so bad from being in the rain with no cover...... needs a carb and fuel tank. Its a shame, those engines are nice.

  • yeah they are nice engines, im rebuilding a 92' .very dependble

  • Yes I do, I just found the filter and assembly for it. Luckilly I myself didnt run it but once for the video and two other times. The carb just flooded out the engine, I think I need a new carb. The mixture screw doesnt even have a tip on it....... Wish I knew the history of the engine.

  • dude you really need an air filter on there cause i tore the same motor apart which ran for a long time without an air filter and the cylinder wall and rings were fcked like i removed the oil and turned the motor by hand a few times and it almost locked up

  • @motorhead45102 i agree
