These were sweet cars. Underated at 350hp. That was a joke! They wen't high 12's consistantly and had a top speed of around 180 mph. Very respectable for their time.

It sounds closer to a Diablo V12 to my ears. There really is no such thing as a 'V8' or 'V4' or 'V12' sound though. It all depends on how the engine is designed and the number of cylinders has nothing to do with it.
Thanks for that little nugget of info. If I wasn't already aware of the fact, It would have been quite handy to know that there isn't such a thing as a V4 sound.
BTW, I dont know what Diablo you've been listening to, but it couldn't have been healthy if it sounded like this; I can assure you.

compare the above vid with this one... it sounds the SAME, because a flat plane V8 (Lotus) has the same crank geometry as a conventional 4 cyl (MR2).
Yes, I know that bikes and even some cars (Lancia) use a V4... That said, there isn't such thing as a distinct V4 'sound' because the geometry between a v4 and an inline 4 is still the same. The V layout is just a more effective way of packaging an engine.
BTW, only Boxer 4's (Subaru) sound different to conventional 4's because each opposing piston is at 180 deg.
And no... A flat plane V8 does not sound any different to a conventional four. It just sounds like it revs harder.
come again? v4? that alone proves you don't know what you're talking about. so you're saying you couldnt tell the diff between a I6 and V6? or a v6 and v8?
Wow, did you upgrade engine internals or just the turbos ?
I've read Lotus has them way undertuned from the factory due to the weak transmission. Although I've read of cars getting a transmission blue printed for extra strength.
This is british car with a fragile and crappy Renault transmission. Lotus helped designed the engine and its 3.5l twin turbo. The new concept might have an audi engine wich would be a whole lot better than that french crap they have been getting.
Lotus designed the engine all by themselves. It's NOT a Renault design.
And most Italian cars are no more reliable. On the contrary.
Also, the handling of the Esprit, and all other Lotuses, were always excellent. For a car designed in the 70's, it still could compete with the best on a racetrack in the 90's.
You are guesing? Well you guessed wrong...send me your email address & I'll email you the dyno graph. Most V8 Esprits get higher HP on the dyno than the factory claimed 350HP at the crank. It's easy to find on all lotus related forums. Please use your brain and do some research before leaving a comment next time.
Instead of being a complete douche, how about posting the numbers next time instead of just another video of a car on a dyno from behind. Please use your brain and post something useful next time.
Please get some education before you learn how to use the computer the wrong way. If I'm your daddy I'll slap your butt and send you back to pre-school. This video is just like every other dyno video on youtube.
Check out the videos of the old Ferrari f40 LM on this site. It's the one where Jacque Lafitte drives it. Sometimes it sounds like it has a regular crank, sometimes like a 4 banger (flat crank). It's a wild sound!
cool fucking car! with so many other exotics out there, this is highly forgotten. if there was a car meet with vipers, vettes, lambos, and ferrari's, I would go straight for the esprit! especially because its attainable at 40-50K$ with less than 35,000 miles!
Good that it can be 'fixed' considering that Lotus shipped without charge coolers, only a 5 speed transmission, and an open differential.

A lotus V8 sounds like two inline 4's. Same way a V12 lambo will sound like two inline 6's.
There is such thing as a V4 sound though, look up the Suzuki TL1000.

Actually, the TL1000 is a vtwin (and a fast one at that).
If you want a v4, go buy a Yamaha VMax! those things are SICK!

Yeah, or rather the old Saab 96. That one was often called Saab V4 in Sweden. It had a Ford derived V4 engine.

The Esprit is never a 0-60 car anyways. Without doing a stupid dump the clutch & power shift into 2nd that gearbox is actually quite nice.

True but it could have been better for the amount your paying.

I have a few mods but mostly just the ones that are designed to uncork the engine limitations from lotus.. those bastards!

hey, i'm curious to know what kind of results you had from your Dyno. I have a 98 esprit that is stock besides exhaust.
