  • Did Nickelback write this song for Theory of A Deadman?

  • It is so similar. x-x

  • srsly glad im not the only one who noticed this but srsly instead of ripping them off they shoulda made it a tribute -___-

  • You need to be hard of hearing to not notice the striking similiarities between these two songs.

  • Cut them some slack. Theory of a Deadman is my favorite Nickelback cover band, and since the entirety of Nickelback's work is just pretty much the same song repeated a dozen times on each of their albums TOADM must have been bored and needed to plagiarize someone else's music for a change.

  • the bad ass guitar riff sounds the same but who cares both songs rock!

  • where can I get that song with the two mashed up together like that. I can't find it anywhere but here

  • yeah these 2 song are pratcally identicle but there not the only ones who use classics or other bands for their own uses:

*dead or alive-you spin me right round is a good example, there are like 3 covers

*michael jacksons- beat it , many many covers of this

*three days grace-animal,skillet has a similar song

all im trying to say , T.O.A.D.M kinda gave a modern touch of the song... i hope i dont sound like a smart ass or a jerk im just giving my thoughts

    GREAT VID!!! :D

  • They are similar, they are not the same.

  • Yeah, glad to know that I'm not the only one that has noticed this. T.O.A.D.M. totally ripped off the cult in that song.

  • I'm not the only one who noticed the similarity then... I prefer Fire Woman and I don't think that this mix has enough of that song in it. The majority of it was Bad Girlfriend... and it was censored!!!

  • There's a difference between a respectful reference to another band and a blatant, shameless ripoff. Hell, my band gives kudos to Sabbath in one of our songs where we use the Luke's Wall riff. However, this is nothing but pure artistic theft. Theory of a Deadman have always sounded like Nickelback wannabes anyway.

  • yeah they sound a lot alike but they're both still good songs

  • its kinda funny cuz i bet they have no idea that little riff is a shameless ripoff

  • And Ian Astbury said: "Just send the royalties directly to me, please."

  • I never noticed... but sadly I haven't been listening to the Cult lately... :( But, Its upsetting that every mainstream Band/group/performer (Not ever but...) are ripping someone, or something off.

  • Yeah theory has no respect from me.

  • I was listening to it when I was driving and heard the guitar riff, turned off the radio and said "what's that song?" I kept humming the riff over and over and then it dawned on me FIRE WOMAN!!! When I got home, I knew someone else already had blended them! Thanks!

  • Yes, it's a blatant ripoff...knew it immediately when it was first released...I even started singing Fire Woman until I realized it wasn't that song.

I'm happy they don't play this song anymore on the radio, really.

The sad truth is this is really prevelant...even the most original bands like Primus took the sound from King Crimson's "Elephant Talk" and turned it into a song "Jerry was a Racecar Driver"...at least they made that song their own.

  • lol you too, gp iverson, glad i'm not the only one who sang fire woman when they heard it

  • Hmm, they sound a little similar, if you listen to it closely. It's not as obvious as coldplay's rip off was tho.

  • But seriously... HOW stupid is the TOAD lyric?! "My girlfriend's a dick magnet"!??!?!?!

  • Very.

  • THIS ROCKS! How'd you do it?! Theory sucks... but this RULES!

  • Good mixing

I was trying to prove this on myspace lol

this could have made it easy

  • haha,

i was just watching VH1 Classic and Fire Woman came on and i was like, what the hell, that shitty Theory of a Deadman ripped this off. The Cult kick ass.

  • I knew it!

  • Nice!! :] Btw, where did you get the clean version of Bad Girlfriend? Is it on youtube somewhere? Thanks!!

  • Its the radio edit. My dad got it from where he works...

I'm not sure if you could find that online...

If I find out I'll let you know! :)

  • why bher listening to such a vulgar song if it's sensored?

  • Well Deadman is prob the gayest band ive ever heard. Cult at least has the feeling of a flowing band. This new shit sounds forced. As well theres nothing wrong with ripping off.. if you give credit to them. In other words f--- you deadman lol.

  • wow never noticed that. pretty weird. both really good songs tho. doesnt matter if fire woman got ripped off

  • Nice! Good job dad!

  • LOL.... They should get together :D I still prefer the cult tho!

  • to tell you the truth, i had no idea that firewoman existed till someone mentioned it when commentin on a bad girlfriend vid. pretty awesome that they did. Basically bad girlfriend is a catalyst for the Cult :)

  • the fact that you suck at knowing good music does not make your shitty music better.

  • yo douchebag, i wasnt talkin shit about the cult. you're sayin you knew about firewoman befoe this video? bullshit. and toad aint shitty dumbfuck.

  • gotta get a great idea from somewhere right?

  • Can't disagree the riffs sound a lot a like. Theory probably won't be sued unless The Cult copyrighted the riff, which is unlikely. Besides that small riff, the rest of the song doesn't sound even close. I was able to meet the band and these guys are damn good live.

  • You aren't understanding how copyright works. It's not like a patent, where you have to take specific action. Everything you write is under copyright by default.

The key points here are how distinctive the bits ToaDM lifted are, and how integral they are to the song.

Personally, I think that both songs are built around the riff, and it's very distinctive.

How good ToaDM are is irrelevant.

  • Sorry but the verse's chord progression has also been copied, besides the main lick.

  • ya well this shit happens all the fuckin time.lol llok at p diddy he stole like 7 niggas songs from the 80s ;)

  • good video

  • first thing I thought of when I heard Bad Girlfriend...firewoman

  • It is a rip. No arguing about it.

  • I don't see any similarity at all.

Love both bands, but I see absolutely nothing alike between the two songs.

  • the "similarity" is the guitar riff from 0:35-0:40 and the one from 0:41-0:46

the first one is from "Bad Girlfriend"

the second one is from "Fire Woman"

  • And the verse's chord progression has been stolen too.

  • @YourExBestFriend - and the chorus and the verse have identical cords so you could easily sing one song over the other.. :))))

  • i like TOAD and cult and i have to say i like them together, pretty epic

  • if they are that close, why arn't they pay'n the cult for the rights?

  • meh

  • i was just listenin to the radio and thought i was about to listen to the cult. but all i heard was a rip

  • Dude your dad is badass.

  • Hell, about 90-98% of hip-hop/rap songs are samples that are ripped off from real musicians and no one seems to have a problem with it.

  • Theory of a Deadman isn't hip-hop/rap. >_>

  • Did not say it was. I am pointing out the double standard that exists in music these days. Songs are ripped off everyday by hip-hop "artists" and no one cares.

A rock band like Theory of a Deadman releases a song that sounds similar to Firewoman and everyone gets their panties in a wad. Why do rap "artists" get a pass?

  • Eh, doesn't really bother me, if a song is good a song is good.

  • Because no one cares about crappy music by rap "artists" so it goes unnoticed and no one complains.

  • the cult was is so much better. i heard TOAD song and i hate that they riped off the cult. thats the problem nowadays is nothing is original.

  • idc

i heard a remix like this and i think it rocks

...thats what i think but you have your own opinion, but idc what it is

  • i couldnt agree with karatechopsueycide more.

  • no doubt a rip off but that's the history of rock keith richards admits he rips riffs off of others that does not mean there is not a creative process to it Besides The Cult Rock this song nobody can touch Ian's vocals

  • Right on.. TOAD suck. I heard this on the radio and it's such an obvious rip of Fire Woman. Plus the Nickel-suck type lyrics. Wal Mart rock

  • I'm glad i'm not the only one that figured this out.. huge cult fan.

  • damn, see i heard it on the radio, and was surprised at how similar they were, they sound really awesome mixed haha

  • its like coldplay. they ripped off joe satriani and now there gettin sued by him

  • It's a complete rip off. The Cult should sue. As a musician myself, I would be pissed.

  • Oh Jesus! The Cult probably ripped it off from somebody else too. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the cult, but as a musician I find it very hard to not do something that hasn't been done before. However if I were TOAD, I would have been a little less obvious. How about Chicago's 25 or 6 to 4 and Brainstew by Green Day? How about Sixx AM's Life is beautiful and Duran Duran's Come Undone? One more: Ice Ice baby and Under Pressure. Not that was a rip! You can't copyright a chord progression!

  • jimmykicker: i agree with you man. I don't care if musicians rip each other off.

  • @metal9292 Unfortunately, Theory of a Deadman's record company is the SAME company the Cult's songs belong to. So no, there's not going to be any lawsuit. Gotta love big record companies. Remember who the real music thieves are :)
