Very cool, and it would work in real life---just not as an opener ;>) EVERY martial arts attack can have its use, don't throw away anything, real life fighting you need a lot of tools, infinite tools really. Go read Bruce Lee's philosophies. Kuk Sool!

Very, very nice kick. Clearly loads of control and spatial awareness, but is there a practical application to this kick?

I did not question the excellence of the kick, only its practical application, I have roughly 6 years martial arts experience and kicks like this are almost always for the purposes of Kata, or enhancement of spatial awareness and hold little practical value. The answer to your question therefore, is no.
