I'd like to add to RootedUp's comment - there is also the money sent 'home' by migrant workers. In 2009 it's estimated £4billion was sent overseas in such remittances compared to £7billion in UK govt aid. (This figure supplied by House of Commons library to Harriet Harman MP for a speech on 10 Mar 2011) It's hard to get exact figures but it is estimated that world wide such remittances far exceed government aid. And have done a lot to aid development in poorer countries.
As an American, I am glad to see that many of my cousins across the pond are so generous. I do wonder however, that organizations like ONE and many, many others are limiting their reporting by only taking government spending into account. How much more of a nation's GDP (in the UK and US) go to foreign aid through personal donations? There are many more dollars sent than simply taking small percentage of total tax revenues of government.
If anyone from ONE.org can read this, I want to suggest your organisation to follow ted.com example as it publishes its video in english and then a team of volunteers translate the talk in other languages by subtitles. If you want to spread your idea and the results of smart aids in poor countries (like this one does very well) you should adopt the same tehnology Ted uses: d o t s u b . c o m . I would like to share with my friends on Facebook this video subbed in my own language.
