The doc has inconsistencies, and glosses over Patterson , johanssen and holmes. but still entertaining and good footage. However the worst part is having to read these ridiculous personal tirades in the comment section. It's about the movie, no one cares about an online war of words. See, I just articulated myself without profanity. Imagine that !
Whoever made this film did not do their research. Gene Tunney did not retire undefeated. Tunney was beaten badly early in his career by Harry Greb. However, the rare film footage in this documentary is wonderful to watch.
i was trying to make ur frriend understand why everyone loves Ali, as a man aswell as fighter. holmes was not proud of the beating he gave an aged ali, more embarrassed.. hence going easy on him. he was simply passed it. i agree holmes is underrated however
Why doesn't this video show Larry Holmes when he was good? He's one of the greatest and most important fighters in the history of the sport. I guess the cunt who made this jerk-off video didn't want to have to show him giving Ali the worst beating of his career. I keep forgetting that ESPN and every ignorant shithead in the world today has a hard dick for Ali.
@bigmoney749 Larry Holmes was only good when Ali pretty much retired and by then there were hardly any great boxers left, Like Ali said, "these guys (inlcuding holmes) were nothing but sparring partners when I was in my prime." Holmes did nothing but beat bums for 7 years. He shouldn't be in this documentary.
@kasim8t3 Ali was 38 and very washed up. The point is it was still a very important fight for both men regardless of how unhappy that makes ignorant Ali nuthuggers like you. Larry fought until he was 52 which you probably didn't know. I know boxing, greenhorn. Learn a thing or two for yourself and then come talk to me.
@bigmoney749 yes i did know u dumb fuck. u think u know more about boxing than me? Lol. dream on. u dont need to study boxing when u love it as much as me. yeah holmes fought till over 50, and? come back to me when u realise he was loosing his fights also late on. fool
@kasim8t3 Holmes won his last four fights and eight of his last nine. I wouldn't call that "losing" fights. Ali lost three of his last four. None of that really matters though since I'm not comparing Ali and Holmes as fighters. Who was better is insignificant. What is significant is that Larry Holmes dominated the division for years and he was a great and very important champion who should be in this video even if that means people need to see his very important fight with Ali.
@bigmoney749 the point is that fight alone does not define holmes, and certainly not Ali... im not denying that holmes was a great fighter, but so what if Ali gets a lot of credit, deserved dont u think? especially considering his personality and what he did outside of the ring. Legend
@kasim8t3 I give boxers credit for their skills in the ring, not their personalities and based on that, Holmes deserves just as much credit as Ali. Ali did a lot outside of the ring, and if someone makes a video called "kings of the outside of the ring" praising Ali, I won't have any objections, but in the ring, Larry Holmes was every bit as good as Ali, better even in my opinion, and their fight, a matchup of two all time greats, was very important even if it wasn't defining of either man.
@bigmoney749 We didnt even see the best of Ali (25-29 he was out).. Put Holmes in Alis position >> 32 year old Holmes against Foreman 6 years his junior >> Smokin Joe after nearly 4 years out.. Can you honestly say Holmes wouldve succeeded. Imo Foreman and Frazier wouldve beaten Holmes but Holmes is definetly amongst the greats. But remember, Ali beat fighters Holmes struggled against (Norton, Shavers) wayy past his best.
@rydeoride Ali was at his best in his second fight with Liston. Also, Norton beat Ali and are you really trying to tell me that Holmes struggled with Shavers? He was one point on one scorecard away from a shutout in their first fight and he won every round except the seventh before he knocked Shavers out in their second fight. Also, Ali was 32 against Foreman. That's not that old and Holmes has stated many times that he wanted to fight Foreman but Foreman kept ducking him.
@bigmoney749 Are you tryna be funny? Ali was at his best on his 1st defence? You are a moron, everybody knows Ali was gonna get better and didnt even get a chance to reach his peak.. coming back at 29. Just watch the last fight before his exile and his first after and tell me if he was the same. 3 years 7 months is gonna have huge affect on his reflexes and footwork (which he relied on). You may be right about Shavers fight but am not convinced Norton beat Ali.. as close as it was
@rydeoride First of all, Ali was 31 against Norton when Kenny beat him, which isn't old at all. Second of all, Ali's style was very dependent on youth, meaning he would be best in his early to mid 20s. He lost good years, some of his best, but duty called. Nothing anyone can do about it. Also, I AM right about Shavers. Watch the fights, dipshit.
@bigmoney749 You dickhead Ali in his mid 30s beat Frazier twice and Foreman and a whole bunch of others. If he was one dimensional and relied only on his quickness, he wouldn't have stood a chance against any of his opponents in the 70s. He adapted to the times and relied more on his strength, brains and amazing chin. Zaire and Manila showed his toughness. So shut ur mouth and go sleep with ur mama coz ur knowledge of boxing is zero like ur bird brain.
@crapfacejoe When did I say Ali was one dimensional? Also, quickness is key in boxing and he had ring smarts and a great chin. I never said he didn't. Manila showed his toughness. Zaire showed his brains. Trust me kid, I know more about boxing than you could hope to learn in five lifetimes. Be smart and pick a different opponent to argue with.
@bigmoney749 yes i did know u dumb fuck. u think u know more about boxing than me? Lol. dream on. u dont need to study boxing when u love it as much as me. yeah holmes fought till over 50, and? come back to me when u realise he was loosing his fights also late on. fool

Great documentary, thank you ibhof2! Does somebody know, where I can get the soundtrack of this documentary? I like the instrumental sound that begins at the weigh-in Louis vs. Schmelling 2. 0:28:09--0:28:59.
I watched this doco a lot on kid as I had it on tape. But what always annoyed be about it was that Charles, Walcott, Ingo, Holmes, Spinks never got any credit at all. They were all but ignored !
I think they didn't mention Holmes because Holmes was the only one who didn't unify all the heavyweight titles available in his era, Jack Dempsey to Sonny Liston (World Heavyweight title), Muhammad Ali, George Forman and Joe Fraiser (WBA,WBC), Mike Tyson (WBA, WBC, IBF). Holmes only held one title at a time, first the WBC then the IBF, so there was other champions in his era.
this documentary is so biased and full of shit, carnera had a successful wrestling career after boxing and earned plenty more money, holmes had 21 defences of his title where the fuck is he when he reigned??
I like how they added tyson and left out longtimer placeholder between the ali and tyson eras the criminally overrated larry holmes... but wtf are canera and carpentier doing in here? Scmeling and baer are a bit of a stretch... and the ali /clay thing is disrespectful as all holy hell! Anyone who called him clay after 65 is a piece of shit...
Great video, every boxing fan should watch this. Wish Larry Holmes was in it though!
