Dont know if this is a bit of a stupid noob question being as I am no archer- but if the bow is a bit short overall length couldnt you trim down more so there isnt so much LENGTH of the 'meat' at the handhold midsection-and this would then increase the length of both sides of the bending/power part of the bow ie give yourself just maybe a useable 6'' length of handgrip instead of what looks like 12''-and then start beginning the taper from there & so helping to counteract any 'hingeing' also??
it seems to me that one of the lengths is shorter then the others. im assuming u know more then me so no offense but is seems to me a little planning early on to center the handle and make the arms more equal will go a long way when u get to the tillering process
it seems to me that one of the lengths is shorter then the others. im assuming u know more then me so no offense but is seems to me a little planning early on to center the handle and make the arms more equal will go a long way when u get to the tillering process
depending upon the style of bow that hes making, this could have been intended, the lower limb is usually longer than the top one, and bend to a lesser degree also.
Dave that bow looks better than stuff i've made with power tools in a dry room. haha Luvin your relaxed axe sharpening techniques of 'i do it my way'. Thats great advice! Too many folks forget that stuff can be personal and stuff can be done differently. Its al to easy to get hung up on what books say regarding strokes and technique etc. At the end ot the day if an axe is sharp and does the job WE personally want it to then it doesnt matter how it got sharp. Is dual survival gonna be on dvd?
Hey Dave. Cool videos you post on youtube. Ever made a bow from rowan wood? Have a 6feet long rowan tree laying in the wood shed(have had it there for 3 years!). Now I´ve desided to try to make a couple bows from it. It´s about 6 inches thick.
enjoy the vid bro, I make projectile points and different stone tools here in texas and im in the process of making an osage bow and a mulberry bow, hopefully go hunting with all the tools and weapons made myself. anyway kept post videos , the good info.
Just curious, with such a short bow and problems with knots why wouldn't you make a 'bend through the handle' bow? It would stress the limbs a little less.
Great vid Dave. I am not but a few hrs east from u. Ur right the weather is very sucky. Wind chill here is -6. That just makes what u have done in the weather u had to contend with even harder. Thanks for all the hard work and good lessons.
My second bow (which I made yesterday) had a knot in the same place. I didn't have a problem with the knot but unfortunately I didn't shave off enough on one of the limbs and it broke on me.
It would have made a good bow (aside from the wormholes) since it was 65'' and pulled fully to 28'' but it was just 1 to many pull of the string to cause it to snap.
Thanks for the great videos, you have taught me a lot about making my own bow.
Hey Dave! Man I live just close enough to you here in WV to know how crummy that weather really was! Listening to that cold rain was enough to chill you to the bone! -- Great stuff!!!
Okay, been sharping tools for a long time, never seen it done like that... I think the Japanese like to draw things toward them, no doubt they know a thing or two about sharping steel... I'd cut off a finger.
Hey Dave. Although I hate trying to stay dry in the rain, I had to park my 4-wheel drive at the bottom of the hill and walk home in 18 inches of snow 2 nights in a row. And it was -3 degrees this morning. Talk about "colder than a mother-in-law's kiss. Did you check out that axe at Sprotsman's Guide?
I am curious of what the draw weight will be in the end. I guess it will be less than you wanted it in the first place. I know I will spend an awful lot of time in selecting a good piece of wood when I will do mine.
ugh we have the same weather here in south east Michigan as well. i recently bought a guyot design stainless steel bottle. what do you do to your bottle so it wont get sticky in the fire? i think the video where you told us was deleted.. thanks your all your time and effort Dave it is greatly appreciated
you can just buy a can of high temp resistant paint and spray it on. it usually used for grills. its a couple of bucks at your local hardware store. but be sure to bake it on or it'll scratch!
Dave, I'm currently making myself a longbow. Its the first bow I've made so am taking it slowly. Its currently at the stave stage. Would you recommend I cure it before proceeding for best results? Thanks for your great videos.
Hey Dave, Thanks for another great video. How thick normally are the limbs on a finished bow, what is ideal or does it just depend on the wood used? Thanks for all the great info.

when the bow is on the tillering tree, shouldnt you have the limb on the right as thick as the one on the left? so that it increases the power?
