The first piece was an Arabic piece by Mohamed Abdel Wahab called Aziza. It is not Turkish nor Armenian, the second piece he played was a flute by Bach in b minor (that what key it was originally in, i didn't take the time to check what key he is playing it in)
Unique styling, incorporating eastern and western elements....Some East Coast Armenian players also carry forward this style....Many of us have been dancing to his music for a vey long time...It was the first live music I ever danced to.
John is a magnificent oud player but I believe he played violin in our highschool's orchestra. He also performed in the house band at The Fez in Hollywood during the early '60s as a young man. I was privileged to hear him again at a Middle Eastern dance recital in the mountains outside of Santa Cruz, Ca. a few years ago. We are honored to have him in America.
I have been dancing to his music since 1980. He is the NICEST man you'd ever want to meet and made fun of me for being star struck when we met. He is so talented!
did John used to live in orange county California back in the late 80s early 90s? he is an amazing oudist. not sure if it was him, but back then we went to a Greek restaurant and he was the only one playing oud with his electronic drum machine, he rocked the place, he sounded like the whole band. he sang Armenian, Greek, Arabic, you name it. could this be the guy?
Yes, that was John. He played regularly at t Greek restaurant in Placentia, CA called Sophia's. He also toured with Leonard Cohen 1n 1979 and 1988 among his many other remarkable accomplishments. It is an honor to listen to him play.
@GTCMusic i actually know a man he used to play with named John Byramian - him and i sat and talked about how different the Armenians play the oud in comparison to the Arabs - i personally even though i am Sicilian , I considder this music to be gold - if you can get your hands on anything Bilezikjian , Berberian Mgridichian or even the late Oudi Hrant you should treasure it ! in all probability it was this man you saw - large groups of armenians settled in L.A. California.

@GTCMusic He also has songs in Turkish .. what I'm wondering about though is his name ...
Bilezikjian is Armenianized Turkish lol .. (Bilezik : Bracelet, Can = Soul, his last name probably used to be Bilezik or Bilezikcan, Bilezikcan is the way I read his name for the first time)
I learned about him from a very old Turkish song (Bekledim de gelmedin, from : Yesari Asım Arsoy) He made his own version in which he sings Turkish.
I play the oud very (in bands) well but when I heard you playing I think I want to retire mine. You must play the guitar too and playing all in cords makes a lot of sense.
well this is truly grate what this oud player doing.i never herd aziza played like this this originally by an Egyptian oud player called Mohamed abdelwahab. (the 1st part)
o thats cool. my oud teacher knows ur uncle then. and i have ur uncles oud method book and the case for my oud was made by ur uncle haha. go search for the video of him playing with john berberian. i like that video and i learned that song. its a fun song.
He gives life to the instrament ,its magic a credit to his people!

Arab music is read by right to left or left to right?
Desrinify 2 years ago
You asked : Arab music is read by right to left or left to right?
Arabic text is read from right to left, while numbers are read from left to right. Music is read from left to right .

The second part, from about 1:06, is by Johann Sebastian Bach. Not originally for oud, of course. I can't remember what piece it is.

@CuConnacht That's "Badinerie" from Orchestral Suite BWV-1067.
