I still don't understand why this song is split into two songs on the album. It just makes for stupid if I'm listening on my ipod and have it on random. >.>
Well, damn. Just when I finally figure out what every lyric in the song means, I find THIS video! It'll take me forever to figure out what the video is trying to tell me!
As far as I can tell, this is my best shot at interpreting both the song and the video.
Most of us are the high-pitched voices. We have zirconium pants– our life and our youth and vitality. It shall all fade, though, as we slowly disintegrate into chalk through the mechanical hands of time. In this, it seems as though there’s a world within a world within a world. The two-dimensional human beings are our cells and other microscopic organisms within us that give us life.
They’re, in a way, colonizing our bodies. The humans are portrayed by the infant-like creatures. Though we may try to fool ourselves (as the song tends to give the opinion of), we’re all childish and have a lot to learn. Our composition is what gives us our knowledge. When the microscopic man enters the baby, it immediately begins commencing plans on developing its planet. Kinda like how the Monolith in 2001 gave the gorilla-man intelligence.
However, above the planet, as time goes by, the Cosmos is watching– whatever THIS grand creator is supposed to be. It controls how slow or fast the mechanical hands go (the manual crank), and is responsible for all the things the residents cannot control (such as natural disaster). After the population has reached a certain level of intelligence, they decide to explore what’s out beyond their planet, as we have down here on Earth.
They discover themselves in a foreign place… which would be considered in our point of view, to be a pretty basic house. I think that’s in the same vibe as theories that out of our world there’s another world larger than ours, etc., etc., etc. As far as the battle at the end between the three worlds goes, I think it just goes to show that perhaps the smallest of us all can do the most damage.
With our sheer persistence and self-centric desires, we as the human race can extend our reach out into the infinite and establish ourselves there. We’d be less scared of at least SPACE then… since we’re obviously going to stay afraid of time forever. Perhaps our establishment in space has become more like a virus in this modern day, though, more than anything else. We want space, but space doesn’t really want us. (... *cough* Sorry, that was... textblock much.)
I think its talking about time, how its something very small that you never think about, thats the little white aliens. People will fight each other and different races will be killed and empires will grow, but in the end time is always the ruler of everything.
The opening of this sort of reminds me of the Beatles' "I Am The Walrus". Man, while I like the demo version of this song better, I must say, this version is growing on me.
So in the end the little parasitic blinking white guys always win. So if you ever find out you have blinking white parasites.... Don't go visit someones bathroom and make a colony. =)
That is true. However, the band members on the other hand aren't as nice. I went to their concert in Boston and they were uninterested and rude. I think it was in part because everybody was asking where Joe was (he had a replacement) and that pissed them off I guess. Jukebox the Ghost guys were so nice though. I was disappointed because I went to the show because of Tally Hall, and ended up liking Jukebox better after the show! :'(
@Dutchhoth although they are a great band other bands have nice fans like they might be giants, the eels, and well i guess if your talking about main stream of the new age i guees your mostly right
@Dutchhoth Oh, ok. I'll accept that. I hate seeing that, too. I don't know why people bother fighting on music video comments. We're here to enjoy the music. THAT ARGUING IS WHY WE CAN'T HAVE NICE THINGS!
This video is so amazing. I honestly have never seen anything like it, and I just think it is so creative, and how it goes with the song is unexpected but works!
@drywall15 I agree! My friend however does not, which bugs me to no end. The bizarre voices and just general sound of the original is so much more interesting to me.
@theeverlastingdark I do not know if you're even active anymore or if you've listened to Tally Hall's songs anymore, but Ruler of Everything is about time. how time is inevitable. listen to the lyrics and the dark voice is time, while the light voice is Man.
@derebin@hockeytofu101 no man I have a completely different version on my ipod from quite a few years ago, still obviously by tally hall , for instance the 'deep' voice at the beginning wasn't done like that
@universalradio Makes sense. Off the top of my head, there are three distinct versions of the song: one from "Complete Demos," one from the original Quack! issue of "Marvin's Marvelous Mechanical Museum," and a third from Atlantic's reissue of the album. As far as I can tell, the song was rerecorded each time.
This type of music is pure '80s and now it's back. Right on.
