  • l love Tuba

  • Also: Go Jenna!

  • What's with this strange fixation about puffing of the cheeks or not?

Far more important is to use lots of air, and to create a large resonance chamber in your mouth by dropping your jaw and keeping your toungue down/out of the way (think "hot potato!"). Also lift your ribcage and widen your throat (like when you yawn) to make room for air, and use your abs to help set off the notes, like when you cough.

If puffing the cheeks impairs your playing, avoid it. Otherwise, it's a non-issue.

  • I find it harder if you do puff your cheeks. O.o

  • IT DOES NOT MATTER IF YOU PUFF YOUR CHEEKS.

WATCH SOME OF THE GREATEST TUBA PLAYERS OF ALL TIMES!

  • @tubamarius Actually, it does, if u puff your cheeks then whole breath is not goming out, something stays in...

  • @Impss12

no, sorry, it's bullshit. I know your teacher says that you shouldn't do it...the sound has nothing to do with your cheeks...it depends on the person.

if you puff your cheeks, it also doesn't have an effect on your embauchure

e.g. watch gene pokorny, i think he actually can play the tuba. theres no " recept" for playing tuba, when it sounds good and works for you, it's alright.

  • @tubamarius It wasn't my teacher who told me that. And you know actually it really doesn't matter if i puff my cheeks, at least for me =)

  • your a horrible player if u take a breath after every note

  • lol 8 grade so easy

  • PRETTY GOOD FOR AN 8 grader.KEEP IT UP.THATS WHEN I STARTED.

  • Haha GREAT JOB

  • I puff my cheeks to hit low notes, but I play Trumpet, that's different.......^__^

  • idiots, cheeks puffing is not a problem, doing so does not mess with your sound at all. if you chops are still firmly placed back, it is fine to puff

  • thank you most ppl dont realize that

  • TRY IT AT COLLEGE AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS.

  • @jkfnbkwjsn I know professional players who puff their cheeks.

  • haha not suppose to puff out cheeks... i don't know why though. lol my band instructer for 4 grade told me to never do that. but he never told me y.. now im in the 7 and 8 grade band and my new band instructor tells me that im the best tuba player he has ever thought.

  • My 7-8th grade band plays it better. No offence.. 0_0 (go camerado!) =P

  • Yah, you might want to fix your cheeks, before you get dizzy face. (Where you cheeks have been stretched out from doing that so much your cheeks sag :P)

  • I puff my cheeks, Im in concert band, it's alright but you don't wanna get it as a habbit.

  • Hey... sounds pretty good... U still playin?

  • AHH!!! CHEEKS!!! BAD!!!

  • what a hawtie. ;)

  • you so pretty

    *_*

  • jenna! haha its meg (:

dont your cheeks hurt after all that? o.O

  • Sounds REALLY good for 8th graders...rhythms are nice..tone is really good in clarinets and this tuba!! Nice work

  • Whoops - I forgot to say "Have you heard this..."

  • tokyo ska paradise orchestra-baby elephant walk

    youtube(dot)com/watch?v=8Xk8QVfogjE&fmt=18

  • GO TUBA

  • but you honestly sound good so yeah =)

  • if you just work on not puffing out your cheeks. you'll sound lots better. not so... airy

  • why are you breathing after every note, and also just like thetubalogist said your mouth is supost to stay firm and not puff up.just trying to give some advice.

  • im in 7th grade band and i play with the junior high band next year i will play with the highschool band too i play sax our band director told us not to puff our cheeks on any instrument

  • i play the tuba, im am 7th grade advanced band, i used to puff my cheeks in 6th grade because it was hard not to puff them. U ar not supposed to puff ur cheeks but most beginners do.

  • dont puff your cheeks??

    better sound.

    but other wise good?

  • You are SUPPOSED TO with Tuba brainless loon. It makes the tone BETTER.

  • No, you're not supposed to puff your cheeks. Do you even play the Tuba?

  • lmao im a freshman tuba player in college and you are never suposed ot puff you cheeks idiot

  • thats y she said" OMG MY CHEEKS" dumbbo....

-_-"" but it looks like a balloon being blown a lot of times

  • are you stupid as hell? look at the comment i was replying to...

  • Googonx...you know nothing. Just quit trying to sound intelligent

  • erm. there is a possiblity that she wants to make the note more 'bouncy' by puffing her cheeks and she isn't playing running notes. therefore she can afford to breath at everynote.

  • It won't make the note "bouncy", possibly slightly delayed, as puffing your cheeks creates unnecessary eddies of air.

  • or maybe shes used to it

because her mouth might not be

big enough for the mouthpiece ?

and shes probably good enough at it

to get the sound out quick ?

    juss a thought :)

and i lol'ed wen u were rocking your

    head back and forth xD

  • @rollerblada24 Hell no! ive played tuba for 4 years and during the first two years i puffed cheeks because i thought it was correct but when my teacher after 2 years showed me the proper way, much better sound and easier to play 8th notes and 16th notes, so if you say that you should puff cheeks, you obviously dont play tuba or any other instrument. But good job jennakun, beside cheeks lol

  • She sounded a million times better than the bones

  • She sounded a million times better than the bones

  • whoa!

your 'bones almost sound as bad as ours!

even though it's bad to puff ur cheeks yes, yes, I know OMG MY CHEEKS xD it looks entertaining :)

  • Plus, she already noticed it herself, for

mercy's sake (see her "OMG MY CHEEKS"

comment in her "About This Video" section???).

She's been VERY patient with the dozen-or-so,

    er, cheeky^_~ remarks!!! ^_~

(Thanks for your patience, Jenna! ^_^)

    =^___^=

  • Good grief, people, go back and read the

past comments before you post...at least

ten of you told her not to puff her cheeks

...she probably couldn't help it back then,

AND she's said that she doesn't do it as much

    any more!

    Jenna, nice music! ^_^

    =^___^=

  • you shouldn't puff your cheecks but good playing

  • I want to play the Tuba now x3

  • I used to play the bells for this song and I can say that your version is way better than ours.

  • seeing this makes me miss playing my tuba in school..

  • Im actually playing that part on a consert in January, but the differens is that it is solo! Baby Elephant walk is a fun part to play, especially in solo!

  • Yeah, what they said about the cheeks is definitely...cheeky.

You look different than me when you play. I almost laugh when I look at myself in the reflection of the tuba because when I play my face turns into a big wrinkle without puffy cheeks...especially on high notes.

  • really goos wat key is the tuba in

  • I'm sure you know this already, but don't puff your cheeks. lol, a nice tight embachure is a good embachure. You sounded pretty good though, I must say. your tone is impressive for an eighth grader.

  • u have any tips on having a good embachure?

i play the trumpet and i found out ive been playing with the wrong embachure for the past 3 years, my mouth piece keeps slipping away from the center of my mouth while im playing

    any help?

  • well, if you mouthpeice is slipping, that might be due to pushing the trumpet on your face too hard. Practice not shoving the mouthpiece into your lips, especially on high notes. Keeping the corners of you lips nice and tight is important. I'd have to see your embachure to really know.

  • unfortunatly itll be hard to see, but ur advice is still grateful

    thx alot

  • hey tuba girl...thats rite....enjoy the song wen plaing tuba...ur cute wen playing it..bahaha..im tuba too and trumpet in other band..haha...keep it up..

  • you are so cute with your tuba, can't help by smiling...^^,

  • ur good!!!

  • wow! your really good=) Im glad you shared this with us

  • good job, dont breathe after every quater note, and how can you play by puffing your cheeks. Im a tuba player and ive never been able to puff my cheeks and play

  • yeah, i play tuba too, only time i could puff my cheeks was right when i first start playing

  • Nice, and I would just like to say that you are pretty

    :)

  • you're breathing WAY too often. Work those lungs! I'm amazed you haven't passed out yet!

  • What is wrong with you people?! There is no way for an ordinary tuba player to have a nice and warm sound and at the same time not puff the cheeks.

    Go Jenna!!!

  • i think shes into the song..shes sittin the boobin here head...rock on chicky!

  • Why a girl that cute is playing that song on that instrument is beyond me.

  • that was umm disturbing.

but u were gettin down on that tuba.

but u were about to blow ur cheeks off.

    DONT PUFF.

it will mess up ur embechure. [however u spell that]

  • zeke, shut up.

i sit beside you in band class and we both know that anybody is better than our band..or at least everyone minus us ; ]

  • haha. back in the day jenna. back in the day....

  • Very LOL!!!

I'd like to know where I can find this sheet music!!!

    Could you post me?

    Thank you!

    Great job!

  • If you read your Arnold Jacobs, you'll learn that the diaphragm muscle is only used to pull air in, not push it out.

  • Once upon a time, there was a trumpet player named Dizzy Gillespie. All of you who think that puffing your cheeks is harmful should take time to listen to Diz and look at pics of him while he was playing. How good was he? He was one of the bebop founding fathers who revolutionized the way jazz is played. If puffing your cheeks lowers your tone, then Diz's trumpet should have sounded like my tuba.

  • hey i play the tuba dont pull ya damm cheeks out plus ive played baby elephant walk and its way!!!! beter!! u have to have 7657653 trillion more lessons!

  • ohhh yea he played the trumpettttt.... YEAH THE TUBA IS LIKE 10 TIMES FATTER AND HEAVIER THAN A DAMN TRUMPET!!! GODDAMMIT I HATE IT WHEN PEEPLE FORGET THAT THINGS CAN BE DIFFERENT!!! that actually sounds good... but wheres the SAX!!!

  • AWESOME

  • ^__^ good start. you seem to be doing well. dont puff your cheeks. because you will bring the note down. as in the pitch will drop 20 to 50 cents! so, once you do that you shall be fine! remember to have the corner's of your lips back. ^__^ any other help, i can explain. anyway, good job! *claps* bye now!^^

  • what a show =O

  • lmao i'm playing the same song now...in the intermediate band of my school on trombone... but i'm a euphonium in senior band...

  • Oh that state is awesome!

Sorry if I came off harsh. I didnt mean to seem that way.

  • I switched to tuba from flute in 8th grade. lol.. i basically HAD to puff my cheeks in the beginning just to reach the low Bb. Later on, I just got used to not puffing. How long ago was this?

  • hrm well im in 9th grade now, but its almost the end of the year :\ so soon to be in 10th? anyways. I dont do the cheek puffing as much anymore... im finalyl getting lessons too!

  • No offence or anything, But Im a tuba player and we played harder stuff in 5th grade. Great job though.

  • well infact thats fantastic.

im so glad for you :D

not that it matters cuz in hawaii we only get to be in band starting from 6th grade, and our education is not half as good as those in the mainland so i apologize for our incompetance.

    alohaz

  • LOL YOUR CHEEKS!

  • Ah... Henry Mancini. What a genius.

  • haha that is awesome i played that like 5 years ago...i was the only tuba also and it was fun cause i got the fun notes with the flute and i thought it was great...great job for an 8th grader!! keep it up, and yes so rare is it to find a asian girl playing a tuba.

  • were mplaying this song too. good job not letting your cheeks puff out too much

  • hey! im in 8th grade too. Im currently trying to get my teacher to let us play this song as well lol... Oh and nice job. ( try not puffing ur cheeks out, other wise nice job!) I Play the bassoon but i have a lot of female friends and guy friends that play tube.

  • like omgsh a female asn tuba player! both female and asian that is rare! lol yea dont puff your cheeks >.< its pretty good otherwise

  • Priceless song!Oh,and it took me forever to learn not to puff my cheecks.Almost impossible to not do during a marching show.

  • Yah, female tuba players unite! xD

  • wow, that was really good! I'm playing that (piccolo) in band and we kind of suck. =) That was great.

  • hehe ;P nice music :) and nice girl :P

  • watch this video in mute xD

  • OMG! You guys are good! I'm in 8th grade and were playing baby elephant walk spet flutes play the main theme not the claraes

  • hey i puff my cheeks when i play tuba and i play just fine... i think lol

  • ye its great to see a female tuba player. dats a nice song and a nice bass line ^.^

  • Great to see a female tuba player :) Keep up the good work! Have you ever played the Circus Suite? that has another tuba 'elephant' solo.

  • Keep them cheeks in. It won't hurt then.

  • The timpani player kind of stole the show from you...

  • Sounds good. If I may say so try to use your breath more efficiently by trying to keep your cheeks flat, practise to get lower tones out of the instruments, playing extremely short notes, playing extremely long notes while keeping your eyes closed, trying to concentrate on what you hear. Keep on going and you'll be allright

  • Awesome. that great from 8th grade. now stick with it and practice. the world can always use more girl tuba players

  • Don't puff your cheeks.

  • yeah airs gotta come from the diaphragm

  • more diaphragmic air loosen up those lips tuck the cheeks in.

  • hey! I wouldn't listen to whats been said about puffing your cheecks out, on a instrument like the tuba it gives you a broader tone.

But what I have noticed with your playing is that you don't give yourself enough time to take a big enough breath to support your playing - this was noticable most at the start before you began to play.

To broaden your sound try pushing from your diaphragm!

  • Embochure weak so tone weak. Hm,chiong so hard for what, not good lor. Go prac long tone lar.

  • lol, cheek puff=fail

  • yay

  • not bad...got any more recorded?

  • It was ok, the trombones were kinda stuffy. I thought your sound couldve been better though.

  • SOLO YO! :D
