  • where can i find the first two movements of this piece? i'd really need to listen to them.

  • to andrevdbc

@ that time in China there were only 2 channels to watch on T.V.

So their is a pretty good chance it was that many.

The day after that concert the tour guide told us that is how many watched.

He was the spokesmen for the goverment@ that time still very communist and run under an iron fist. They based it on how people owed a tv

  • I agree that it's amazing that he played for nearly 4 minutes straight, only a few moments pause here and there. French horn is listed along with oboe as one of the hardest instruments to play in the Guiness Book of World Records. My daughter, who plays horn, pointed this out to me...a mere flute player. :P

  • @AnD082292 I'm pretty sure Bassoon is up there as well, and if not definetly should be. It's harder to play than an oboe... and oboe is tough already. but i play f horn so whatever...

  • like it....i play french horn:)

  • is that a triple horn?

  • and it doesn't help that the related videos include pieces played by stefan dohr, dale clevenger, that Siegfried horn girl, etc., all amazing professionals

  • the tone is not stellar, the accompaniment absolutely sucked, and there were many flaws, BUT props to him for playing for FOUR STRAIGHT MINUTES.

Playing for 1 minute straight is tough with the horn. The mouthpiece is so small that only a few lip muscles can be used when playing. It's a tough piece and, again, 4 straight minutes is very long for a horn player.

I play it in high school, too, and I probably need like a couple months to practice that piece to play it..

  • thank you for this vid

  • wow, this looks sooooooo old, lol

  • looks like a hockey player! lol. these are seriously high school kids?

  • FYI, this is the third movement in case you are not familiar with the piece.

  • where i can find sheet music for this at horn

  • Try the music store.

  • it sounds to me like the horn is pooly miked. That is from behind. The horn is a reflecting instrument, much like a Bose speaker. Having played in pro horn sections, this is what a very good horn player sounds right at their bell.

  • somebody please cut that fricken mullet off. jesus.

  • who wrote this concerto ? i need know it please

  • Lars-erik Larsson

  • Gotta love the 80s hairstyles.

  • That is an awesome hair style.

  • i play the french horn and that guy beats me like way badly, hes sound is beautyfull

  • I agree with Zhu. I mean come on, if you were in highschool, playing this and being televised, you'd be a bit nervous too, no?

  • he is a very talented player, has EXCELLENT accuracy, musicality, and style, but he REALLY needs to work on his tone. it just sounds very razzy and distorted. i have seen many players, and this is the most common problem. so many can play well in every regard except tone. for some reason it seems the hardest to master, so i am not really criticizing him, but that is what he would need to fix.

  • I understand what you are saying, but I think most of what you are hearing is just the recording

  • may very well be. idk. its hard to tell often.

  • this.

    is.

    a.

    highschooler.

I'm a highschooler and I can't play NEARLY as good as that.

  • i wish i could play french horn like him, he is amazing

  • sounds like the room you are in is really killing all of the echo...

  • No, i think, It's because the horn solist

has got the hand in horn. that makes a speacial

(in this fall a very special^^) tone.

  • You have got to have some more credibility to say something like: "broadcast on TV to over 300 million people". How long were they listening? 30 seconds? I mean, french horn isn't such a popular instrument (I play myself however) to be listened to by one in twenty people of the world population.

Besides, it doesn't sound like a four/five star ratting.

  • Dear Andre. In life one should consider before stating their opinion, to take things in proper context. The facts are that this was a two hour concert performed in Beijing in 1986 by high school students. It was broadcast nationally in China, so the actual number of people viewing probably wasn't exactly 300 million. But really, who gives a shit. The truth of this moment in my personal history ( I'm a trumpet player, so I'm not the soloist in this video) the truth is the credibility.

  • @andrevdbc I agree that there weren't three hundred million, but definitely quite a few. This is Beijing you're talking about. This is China's capital. In the nineteen eighties China was very interested in improving relations. They were also interested in western culture and music. There were at least ten thousand people watching live in the auditorium, hundred thousand on youtube, a few hundred thousand in north america, and few more hundred thousand in china.

  • if u can make a nicer tone, meaning not too rough, it would sound much nicer

  • very good sound

  • I don't want to bag on him, maybe he just had a bad performance but I did the same piece for solo & ensemble and he did only slightly better than me. I did not screw up on as many of the higher holds as he did though. If I had to play Beijing I would practice it 3 hours a day for a month and not split notes especially

on the final note. Also I would sit down, playing standing up is hard. He was probably nervous, lay off him he is better than most people including me.

  • He was in high school at the time of this video, remember that.

He is a good horn player in my opinion.

  • nuttz0, IF A PROFISSIONAL MUSICAN SCREWED UP 3-4 TIMES PER PAGE.... FIRED... so let me know when your orchestra is playing I don't want to be there, 3-4 mistakes per page, per player = 4x10 pages x 50 musicans = 2000 mistakes. No thank you

  • can you upload horn videos

i would really like to see your playing

  • that's not relevant, is it?

I agree with whatever7x7 on this. No way professional musicians make that many errors. What orchestra do you listen to?

  • apparently this one

  • will everyone plz stop bagging this prformance! i've recently started playing french horn and it's hard! french horn is the hardest brass instrument to learn and i'm not just saying that, it's true! professional orchestra players average about 3-4 mistakes per page of music! so leave him alone unless you can play it better!

  • I play the french horn. It's okay but once u start getting into it gets very hard.

  • Beautiful sound, and beautiful mullet...

  • I wish I could play like him. I like the piece too.

  • it's good. what music is this called?

  • Nipponkokn STOP defending this P.O.S., you already lost. The last note of the piece sums it up.

  • It may not sound great, but it's a pretty difficult piece to play. If you're so wonderful, post a video of you playing it.

  • crazylover2013, are you gay? the performance sucks, the split notes ( i got up to 114 and lost count)sucked, and the hand stuffed all the way up the bell sucks, and most of all the strings cant stay together to save the life of a dog turd. And I would like to treat you like a bitch cause your a PUSSY.

  • i have played saxophone ind i'm good at it it's fun to play

  • i love the sound a french horn makes. I play saxophone and i'm not that bad, and i can't wait i am going to take french horn lessons!!!

  • Beautiful playing.

  • all yall mother fucking haters like whatever7x7

shut the fuck up and back the fuck away dont hate cuz you jelous bitch this was very well played i really enjoyed it

  • impressive!

  • Solo player pley very bad!!!!

  • Nicely played. Thank you for your contribution. I confess I'm not terribly familiar with Lars-Erik Larsson. Maybe I should give his work a bit more of a listen. Further, my sympathy for the rot from all the naysayers. I shudder to think what they might say if they encountered genuinely difficult music, as Messiaen, say. (Who also wrote some interesting music for horn, as it happens.)

  • one last thing markoal, this is one solo you could really screw up and no one would ever catch on to it, have ya ever just made a bunch of stupid sounds just for the hell of it. wait a minute I finely made it through to the end, is that clapping, or everyone schuffling to pick up whatever is within reach to take aim ..

  • You have got to be kidding, sloppy, muffeled crap, a bunch of pointless gathered notes

  • Thanks for your insight, Ace. Next time allow for the very real possibility that the issue lies with the audio mix and/or mic placement.

Gee, always that angry and negative -- or merely a bad day? Seems your handle suits you to a 't', 'whatever'.

  • sounds like the mic is right up his bell, i would have liked to hear a little bit further, post tonal spread

  • This is one of the reasons Im gonna learn French Horn. And I'm pretty sure it's a safe bet to say this is why many plp learned to play French Horn and are still Rocking today.

    6/5 Unbelieveable

  • wow this is a remarkably small group! but the music is played very nicely :-)

  • im watching this because i'm doing this project about the french horn and i have to describe its sound.

  • u could say very awsome sound

  • played like a true american...hand stuffed alllll the way up the bell

  • Did you see the Canadian flag in the background?

    He's Canadian, not American.

And it's the mic proximity and hall that are contributing to the muffled sound you're commenting on.

  • @zingraff the country Canada is in the continent called America. And I would say all hornists in North America play similarly. They prefer the strong more brass tone of the horn. and I agree with matt who said his hand is way too far up the bell.

  • Man, Toronto sure is a fan of the 80's hairstyles :) When was this shot?

  • Read the info--it was shot in 1986

  • hey that was pretty good =)

the piece is the third movement of the larsson horn concerto. the first one is really pretty too XD

    do you study horn?

  • No, I'm a professional Trumpet player. It is a friend of mine in this video playing horn.

  • 3:50 big mistake

  • Thanks for pointing out the obvious. Not necessary.

  • what do you mean by that?

  • interesting, i've never heard this piece before. Is this the whole thing or just the 1st movement?

  • french horns are the best!

  • What peice is this? I gotta find the sheet music!

  • that is amazing

    must practise more i suck

  • good

  • Oh good gravy, is that a triple valve I see before me? Plus, this guys got KILLER intonations and sound...It makes me feel so insignifigant...MUST PRACTICE!!!! ^_^

  • Well done..

  • whats the name of this titel

  • are there more types from this titel

  • Wow this makes me what to pratice far more.

    Go Horns.

  • jaja el corte del tipo

  • dude's got a sweet mullet

  • hells yes

  • Why is there a Canadian flag and a (bigger) Chinese flag? i didn't see any asians.

  • The concert is in Beijing.

    Read the description.

  • Oh thanks, i dont usually look at descriptions

  • go French Horns!!!

    i play that instrument!!!

  • I dont like his tone, its really raspy and gross in some places. I think it cuz his hands almost all the way in the bell. Maybe its how the song is supposed to be played.

  • i think the microphone should be farther out in the middle of the room. Or it should perhaps be played in a larger concert hall with better acoustic

  • That's because the microphone is too close behind the bell. Audio techs think they know it all and you literally have to refuse to play to get them to place it in front of the horn.

  • why is there only strings and 1 wind?

  • Because that's what the piece is scored for.

  • I don't want to be mean but he put's the string players in that to shame.

  • I think all of you people with your lame comments, only speak to hear yourself talk.

  • Umm, that was a compliment

  • looks like its from the 80s-90s cuz of the graphics and the poor sound

  • the soloist's hair? 80's duhh.he's pretty beast tho.

  • Nice performance, but the horn's tone is a bit dead... perhaps it's the way the song was meant to be played. It sounds like it should be slightly more victorious and open, though.

  • love the hair

  • He should put his hand at the bottom of the bell opening, it's his choice, but i've found that it produces a much clearer, purer sound, though it is less comfortable. Great performance though.

  • does he have to stand? are cellists the only instrumentalists who are allowed to sit?

  • Solo Horn should always be played standing.

  • if you knew anything about the french horn you would know that it helps to hold it and to help pitch it in certain pieces

  • lol....hahahahHAHAHAHAH

  • thats how its played genius!!

  • Hey, i play the french horn and you have to put your hand in the bell dipshit

  • LOL...

  • ok ive been playin horn for a while i go to north east of the arts.....a good horn player knows when to have a sound with edge and when to have a mellow calm sound....this piece is charchterized with staccatos and marcatos with some phrases of slurs and legatos he clearly knows when to use them. So there is the answer....thank you for your time

  • double horn?

  • yea u can c the position of his thumb and whan it changes

  • i wish i sounded that good

  • one day im sure

  • never since i'm quitting after this year b/c i want to have more electives

  • oh right lol. good for you if thats wat u feel is best

  • its just a hobby for me

  • i've played a bunch of instruments, (clarinet, alto sax, trombone, trumpet, i can play baritone cause it has the same fingerings as the trumpet, piano, french horn and bassoon) and my absolute FAVORITE is the french horn. i started playing last year and my band teacher says i play like i've been playing for 4 years :D not trying to brag. oh and i started playing bassoon this year and i like it, but not as much as i love the french horn.

  • no idiots, you dont play with a better tone than that, you play the wrong way that sounds nice, thats how its supposed to be. dumbasses

  • nice mullet

  • The Larsson is a great concerto. A tricky part about the third movement is making sure that the sixteenth note doesn't get pushed into the eighth note in the repeated theme. And the dynamics really have to be exagerated.

  • ive been playing the french horn for 7 years. he could be much better.

  • blleckkkk!!! I hate that tone!!! maybe it's the vid????

  • thats the french horn for you... i recently switched from trumpet to help out my band.. but i absolutely dread it.. trumpet is so much brighter

    thats just my opinion tho

  • Well i play horn with better tone then him and Im in a 8th grade band! Shouldnt they correct that?

  • Regardless of the horn playing....That is a sensational mullet!!

  • he sounds ok, but his sound is almost dead...almost like theres no life in the tone it sounds very heavy...other than that it seems pretty good overall

  • I am in 9th grade and I play trumpet, baritone, tuba, piano, and pipe organ. I had my first French horn lesson last week. I love it!

  • I cant be the only one who hears the pitch problems... soooo bad... not so bad technique. I wouldnt say fantastic though. And il leave room for error with the recording

  • i play the horn...he is SO much better than me even though i have been playing it for 8 years..

  • i want to play like him how long must i learn to play like him? (reply to this comment) lol

  • If you can see his positions he's playing around the High C-concert in the staff most of the time, I said AROUND so dont get so mad he might be playing above the staff a couple times.

  • i am a 7th grade honors french horn lol >.>

  • damn..... this is awesome : D

  • wat grade horn r u guys?

  • HE is brilliant !!!

  • okay, I play the french horn and to me...HE IS GOOD!

  • This player has great promise. He did a very good job with this solo. I played horn for many years and will probably start again someday soon. This horn he is playing is a Holton Farkas H179 one of the best Double Geyer styled horns out there. Of course the best is the Viennese Pumpenhorn but then again it's a totally different animal. Hopefully I'll get to play this work that he's done here. I totally agree the microphone was too close to him in this recording.

  • tone isn't great, but the articulations and notes are all nearly perfect. dynamics are alright. does anyone know what horn this is? and to cesarhorn, this is the lars-erik larsson concertina.

  • i reason why it sounds so wierd is cos his hand is flat on the bell , the metal doesnt ring , and hell yea , the mike sucks !! but he's good ...

  • esse cara toca muito muito memso meus parabens

  • About all the comments on the bell hand placement! It's not how far the hand his up the bell but the shape he is making. In my opinion he is making a more closed shape with his hand that's all. plaus it sounds like the mike is right next to his bell.

  • Nice played, im playing on the same piece at the time, but where is the dynamics? Its a difficult piece, i know, but its a lots of piano parts in it, and the sound got quite similar all the way because of the missing dynamic. But its nice played allthough!

  • hy .....can u tell me what piece it's this??

  • Gosh!!! How i wish i can play like him!

  • Tone is a bit muted... and his hair looks straight out of the '80s. Ouch!

  • how old was the horn player when he played this?

    not a bad player

  • About 18 or 19 years old.

  • wow hes very good for his age

  • quem som horrivel este trompista tem

  • People say his tone is that great because his hand is two far in the bell of the horn. Perhaps he was nervous on the day, his hands were sweating and it was the only way he could support the weight of the horn.

  • It is much harder to do solos on Horn when standing and support the Horn while getting the correct sound modification required by the hand. The stop-horn bits were wonderful. He performed well however the microphone placement and his lack of using piano and pianissimo correctly may have more to do with the type of stage or sound of the hall he was performing in. Also he may not have had opportunity for a run-through before with the orchestra at that location.

  • i agree, the tone is dry, but only in certain parts. Great performance.

  • I played this last year in a recital. The piece is difficult... not for the actual notes, but the rhythmic accuracy with the orchestra is hard to line up.

  • Business in front Party in back Baby!!! lol great video, tone is too dry for me But thats a personal choice.

  • Lars-Erik Larsson, 1908-1986. Horn Concertino, Op. 45 no. 5 1st mvt.

  • Lars-Erik Larsson, 1908-1986. Horn Concertino, Op. 45 no. 5 1st mvt.

    Is the third mvt.

  • I love this video. I've watched it about 100 times, I know the tune off my heart.

Its not actually the tune itself that excites me, it the magnificent tone the french horn player creates. He's a joy to listen to.

  • NICE!!! I love the mullet!

  • WOW, this song is AWESOME. Does ANYONE know where I can find sheet music fo it?

  • man i think is very good but your hand is too much in the bell..put it out a little...will sound better!!!

  • part of this piece is using what is called stop-horn technique, it's actually written to be performed that way on purpose. The other parts his hand is positioned correctly for the proper tone, however it's hard to make it work right when standing that's why this may sound a little stressed. As said earlier, it's the shape of the hand not really how far in it goes (unless doing stop-horn).

  • french horn is cool, i play it. apparently it is the worlds hardest instrument to play.

  • hows that?

  • 14-18 feet long, 3 to 5 rotor valves, between 4 and 15 slides, hand positions, time consuming just to tune the thing, yes, I've played one and prefer it over all other brass that I've played. Then let's ad on that the leading traditional concertos were written by W.A. Mozart who tries to kill you with a sheet of music.. is it hard enough yet? If not give it a few years. <joke> Actually in time it becomes easier if you grow with it.

  • Horn player and orchestra are way above average compared to U.S. high school performance standards.

  • Oh My GOD!!!! that tone is amazing. Such Clarity!!!

  • I think the comments are because it's just that he looks like he's older than a high schooler and he has skills but he still sounds like a high schooler. I didn't personally enjoy it but I don't wish to make excessive negative comments so thank you for posting it nonetheless

  • i think that actually he is a good horn player, but the conductor wants that kind of tone.

Do you watch movie Ben Hur?

The tone is like that right?

the tone is actually shows the ancient period, it is also symbolize the war....

  • man yu are ausome i wish i could play like that what kind of horn do you play

  • hy.......can u tell me what piece piece it's this??

  • Yup:)Its Concertino (for Horn and String Orchestra)

op. 45 nr 5 by Lars-Erik Larsson.. On the video his playin the third part, its two more before that, their very beautiful too.

  • do u know where i can get the notes??....a site or something.....free if u know....thx

  • Nope im sorry, but they are worth to pay for, you get full piano and horn notes, and i guess they are not too expencive if you get them over internet. Tyr some stores, search google;)

  • I must say that for HighSchool... Thats really amazing. I mean I'm at Oakwood now and we don't sound that good. And we are Canadians by the way. And we ROCK!

  • awesome tone

  • Wow! As a horn player for many years enjoyed your performance...I assume 1986 from one of the post...Would be interested to know if you continue playing the horn, professional?
