  • OK I just went to listen to a song and I couldn't hear the conga :( I get so confused with all of the different sounds it's hard to make it out the sounds of the conga by itself...do you have any advice for me how to learn how to do that? (in an earlier comment - sorry, I'm taking up your whole feed here!) I asked if there's an audio CD to help with this...I bought one a long time ago but I don't remember it helping...although I probably gave up too early/easily. Would love your help.

  • I have a question, also...why is that when a person gets lost salsa instructors usually point out the clave? I think this is what has been confusing me all these years - I always thought I was supposed to listen for the clave. I am sure I need to watch your videos again to see how the 2 are related...but still, isn't it easier to hear for the conga?

  • Thank you so much for this wonderful video and explanation. I have have taken private salsa lessons and group classes at several different schools and I never actually HEARD the 2 (or any of the beats clearly, for that matter)! Not being able to really hear the beats is by far what has kept me from becoming a good dancer. I am so excited and plan on watching your videos over and over again until I really, really hear it on my own. Do you sell / recommend an audio CD to assist with this?

  • This is a fantastic explanation! Thankssssssssssssssss!

  • So, from my understanding, when doing the Basic step, Stepping forward and breaking on 1st beat is dancing On1 L.A.(1,2,3_5,6,7_). Stepping forward and breaking on 2nd beat is dancing On2 P.R.(_2,3,4_6,7,8) (or Mambo?). Stepping forward on 1st beat, forward on 2nd beat and breaking NYC style (1,2,3_5,6,7_) Could it be called dancing On1-2, instead of On2?. How would we call when dancers only kick forward and step back most of the time like in some Central / South American countries? Maybe On3?

  • Thanks for your video. I wanted to query what you say at 3:15, you are describing puerto rican salsa on 2, should the counts not be 2,3...5 6, 7...1? Instead I think you are describing mambo dancing of the 1940s which was danced 2,3,4 6,7,8? I would appreciate your thoughts on this. Thanks.

  • @sahandnaz thanks. Well, maybe it's similar to mambo. That's the way that many of PR used to dance. Greetings.

  • @sahandnaz Thats Eddie Torres NYRICAN STYLE..El Pionero de Los Paso del Mambo.

  • Great tutorial !!

  • Thank you so much. This is such an exceptionally clear and well thought out explanation of the music and the dancing. I really appreciate you making this available to all of us out here who are inspired by this music.

  • @dddderekcarlson . thank you very much brother.

  • Thank you!

I am a salsa and music dummy. You seem to use 3-2 clave pattern

I want to figure out steps for 2-3 clave pattern. Any hints? thanks

  • @moonnightwalk : clave pattern is the same...3/2/3/2/3/2....... you begin when you want : in the 3 moment ...or in the 2 moment.

  • @ortoaxis

thank you for the response. Will try to practice it tonight. Have a good day and thanks for the explanations!

  • @ortoaxis

Thank you for the response... I will practice it tonight. Have a good day and thanks for great explanations!!

  • thanks for such a nice video .....when i dance i can not tell the difference between on1 or on2 i just dance .....and sometimes i get out of beat ....and it is not nice....do you have any advice? thanks.....gracias por tan buen video ...si me da algun consejo le agradeceria mucho....

  • @besamemucho5 You need to practice a lot feeling the music. For some people it's easier to fall back into on1. For me, some musics make me fall back more to on1 whether other musics just go with on2 perfectly.

When I dance on2 I just look for the conga slap, that helps me

  • Thank you very much sir for putting this wonderful video on youtube. It really helped me a lot to understand the difference between salsa on 1 and on 2. You explained it very simply. Thanks!

  • @cheesecubepal thank you for telling me that's wonderful words.

  • Nice and made on Macintosh which made it nicer too... congratulation ! ;-)

  • This is a very helpful video. I have been dancing salsa for 7 yrs. but did not always understand the beat. Please tell me: Does the clave 3/2 take up an entire phrase (8) or 1/2 of a phrase (4) beats? And what is the difference in the Conga and the Tumbadora?

  • This is the simplest, most direct and clear explanation on the differences in the styles.

  • Dear sir, This is a very very helpful video. Could you please also explain what is dancing on Conga, Tumbarora and on CLAVE means. HOW CAN CAN WE DANCE 6 STEPS TO CLAVE WHEN THERE IS ONLY 5 BEATS. PLEASE HELP MAESTRO.

  • thanks. Just in this video, set the cursor at time: 2:10 and pay attention listening the clave+ conga=tumbadora+steps, all together at time. Pay attention and you'll realize how can dance with music. Bye!

  • great!!!!!! finally somebody comes up with a teaching video combining beats. what dance will there be without the beats!

  • Thanks for the vid.

PS: On 0:50 of the video an orange mice passes behind you!!!

  • je je,!! no....that's not mice... that's the cars moving down in the street behind me (I'm in the first floor). thanks!

  • @ortoaxis jaja, it looked like a corridor behind you.... I couldn't guess what was moving there :P (I thought it was some sort of toy... an electric car or something)

Feliz Navidad y saludos desde Chile

  • Thank you very much sir!

Very few teachers can help their student about ON1- ON2- or ON-CLAVE, like this video. Usually the realy difficult is to understand the dialog between...clave...timbadora,,,step and,,,legs!

Let me do a question please, what about clave

2/3...and are there differences (if which) for overtures of steps, or ON1-ON2?

In any way you helped me to know salsa ritmo,

yuo're a GREAT! People necessity more persons like you in many different fields!

    Have real good life!

  • Thank you for your gently words. 2/3 and 3/2 son clave are basically the same, only difference is if the beginning of the son: music can begin in the first time of clave..or in the second time, but that...after the first frase... sounds both the same.

  • Thanks man, this is great!

  • FINALLY!!!!!!!! A video that clearly explains On1 and On2 Salsa even NY style On2....I really needed to see this video. I have learned only On1 and I feel comfortable with it but I went dancing and me and my date didn't talk about which styles we knew before dancing and of course she learned On2(almost a mess LOL) but I told her since i was the lead she would have to dance On1, but now i understand what On2 is and maybe I can learn both. Once again thanks for this video!

  • Wow!! Thank you so much. I am learning in New Zealand and my dance teacher has been teaching us the rythm by clapping, this just makes it all so much easier. Thank you. Makes all the difference wqhen you understand the music.

  • thanks hulzee, for sharing that with me!

    greetings from Canary Islands!!

  • @Hulzee Eddie Torres is the Pioneer of the Newyork Rican style of Mambo thanks to him that all this Salsa Craze has reached all over the World, and the Many 10tens of thousands he's taught and took it and made it in videos of his teachings.
