this song is amazing man, alot of 70's songs were actually fun to play on the bass for me lately. :] so fun! Fuck you george lopez, get your own damn song. you aint even funny O.o
Chicanos in cali took the lowrider theme from the black brothers in the sixtys and ran with it.....funny thing is WE didnt mind and still dont. back in my day in northern cali , blacks and browns were friends/brothers...........
tes this is the original group that did that song. 6 brothers and a white man from Europe........lol.... but i still as a black man love my Chicano brothers...North Cali baby! Richmond....Milpitas...oakland....yep
@doortech2004, you got it man! The five remaining OG's on this video, Howard Scott, Harold Brown, Lee Oskar, BB Dickerson (LOWRIDER BAND) are alive and well, but are divided, because Lonnie Jordan(the other OG) sides with Jerry 'golddigger' Goldstein, their former producer, who now OWNS the WAR name. So when you see WAR
nowadays, it's just the name. The SOUL of WAR is with the LOWRIDER BAND. Love Lonnie, but he needs to make it right and not see $ signs and get back with his OG bros. Peace.
yeah its too bad he went that way.... hope he had a goood reason.... its his business not mine but its too bad because it makes for a bad ending to a great group.
Haha, true. I'm white but I don't really care about skin color, I simply love this group and their songs. :D Brilliant music if you think about it, really
thanks Lowriderfan.that's what I thought too..what i also meant to say was the new configuration of the War band is bad..Had some friends go to a show up in Northern Cali, and they all said the new so-called War stunk up the place..Sad that Lonnie Jordan did what he did..In some ways they haven't been the same since Papa Dee and Charles passed..
Anybody know what kind of ride that is at 1:04? Looks like a late '40s Chevy maybe? Great stuff from back in the day..Some people seem to be knocking George Lopez here..It's not a big deal really..Pretty much all folks from all races who were down got this..Most of the low-riders I knew happened to be Mexican, but not all..Some white, Filipinos, Blacks, were into this stuff as well..and also about the battle of the bands, the old War band I heard is really bad..
@dbd1353 Not sure, it looks like a Chevy Fleetline, maybe '47-'48. Only know a little 'cause I just happened to cruise in a kick ass '47 a few months back. Peace.
I don't think so. That was NOT WAR! That was Lonnie Jordan and his hired hands. I watched Lopez Tonight and the 'Heartbeat' and soul of WAR is definitely not there. The OG's of WAR, Howard Scott, Lee Oskar, BB Dickerson and Harold Brown now the LOWRIDER BAND, should have been up there with Lonnie as WAR. George is so lucky I wasn't in the audience. I would have raised hell even if they kicked me out. The WAR you see now is just a name people. The LOWRIDER BAND is where it's at. Peace.
Actually, you're wrong. Don't you believe your eyes? Look at the video. You will see 6 Black men and one harmonica-playing white man. There are no latinos in the group. The members who created and performed this song are:
Thanks for setting things straight outrundaylite. I think people are confused about the ethnicity of WAR because the majority of the present day imitation line up of WAR is latino with one OG, Lonnie Jordan. If true WAR fans want the REAL deal, they need to check out the Lowrider Band, 4/5's of the OG's still alive and well and kicking ass with THEIR music that they are not getting paid for. Hats off to George Lopez or anyone that gets the younger generation back into the groove. Peace.
Thank you. The thing is, WAR - the Original members - should be credited for their accomplishments. Their talent was/is great, yet when E. Burdon joined the original members it was as if they were joining him. Their WAR identity was established, but their position was as back-up to Burdon as he was always set apart by top billing. After Burdon left, he faded into relative obscurity and WAR enjoyed greater success without him. Legalities prevent WAR from enjoying the full fruits of their labor.
I noticed I got a thumbs down. Don't get it, but oh well. By the way I'm a chicana and I'm just telling it like it is about my favorite band. The present day WAR lineup is just a farce, with only 1 WAR OG, Lonnie Jordan remaining. While the other 4 OG's of WAR, Howard Scott, Lee Oskar, BB Dickerson, Harold Brown now the LOWRIDER BAND, are not getting their props or royalties for this song and the many others they wrote. So much for 'Why Can't We Friends', Lonnie! Peace and WAR no more.
This song is about the Lowrider culture. The music has a definate Latin influence; that's the point. Just because a black muscian was inspired to write it has no bearing on the song itself. Classic '70s track.
The fact that Black artists created this song is the MOST SIGNIFICANT aspect of this song. This song is pure funk, one of the genres of Soul Music created by Black American culture. The song is NOT about "Lowrider culture". The song is about the cousin of then WAR drummer Harold Brown's cousin who happened to be a participant in the lowrider phenomenon. The lyric is "'The Lowrider... it isn't "'the lowriders...plural. The song is about 1 man. That man, that Lowrider is Harold Brown's cousin.
The music has a Latin sound...possibly. However, it is the driving funk sound and the rhythm of the song that is most compelling. Those components are absolutely Black American. In addition, there aren't any chicanos who have shown the ability to play this song with the same excellent quality of the original performed by Black Americans and 1 Dane. The current lineup of WAR is Latin in composition. Let's see them TRY to remake this masterpiece if the chicanos want to claim it as chicano culture.
theres no mexican americans in the group true but we started lowriding back in the late 30s early 40s and there was no blacks lowriding back then in east los angeles el paso or espanola new mexico the birth places of mexican american barrios that started the word homeboy homie ese and lowriding look at snoop dog and west coast rappers they took the style of the cholos of the chucks creesed dickies and the lowriding
Black Americans never claimed cultural ownership of lowriding. There were Black Americans who participated in the activity. Conversely, many chicanos do try to claim the SONG "Lowrider" as their culture, their so-called "National Anthem". It's not the word "Lowrider" in the song that makes the song. The attraction this song has is its powerful bassline and funky rhythm that is not "cholo", or chicano, but is absolutely, irrefutably Black American culture. The lyric "Lowrider" is secondary.
Its not, that white you see is like a piece of rubber or other guard that keeps your teeth from rattling against the plastic of the mouth piece, most professionals, hell most saxophone players in general, use them, its just they are not always white.
diathelymide residue resurfaces from time to time from the Cyber Airwaves....all the way from the West Coast to the Frumage Territory or the Earthy Midwest.....we like it.
How can you latinos be associated with this song more than any other race when there aren't even any latinos in the group playing this song? If you didn't notice, the song was performed by 6 Black Americans and 1 white man from Denmark. No latinos nowhere.
