Jim Henson creation from the 80's. I loved this movie growing up. Chamberlain with his power hungry sounds and the gelflings running for their lives. Take a look at Labyrinth from the 80's as well. Another from Jim Henson.

There was a theory (possibly from the book World of the Dark Crystal...I need to double check) that the dying Skeksis emperor *wanted* to die for two important reasons. One, through his dying the current (and we presume, most powerful) leader of the Urus would also die. The number would then be nine, a number of chaos according to the universe of the Dark Crystal. If this is true, then why does he insist with his dying breath that he is still emperor?
