All the comments below. I did not read to see if any stated the common knowledge that their first LP is credited as the first Heavy Metal LP ever. Yes they constantly evolved and changed members. I think this last Phillips LP was their Best !
No one's laughing , here , though I guess I never compared them to any British group , even the ones that influenced them , in my mind. When I got turned on to the first two LPs , I wanted MORE , tho' I'd heard about the changes....I'd just seen the "Human Be-In" film , not knowing their track was from 1967. I also thought Holden stayed with them , longer. But , I bought all their albums , found myself enjoying them on different levels.
My respect goes out to all of you who were in Nam. Dickie and Co. were fighting a war , right here , and , late in his career , he was being screwed , they all were. Their crime ? Being honest , caring about people , putting the music first and working their balls off. I hope , somehow , BC's music helped all of you sort it all out , the way it did for me.
The three Indian instruments are the Sitar, Dilruba and the Tanpura. The addition of these instruments highlights the sound and it has a true Psychedelic effect.
This is the version of Blue Cheer everyone would soon like to forget about, like a bad memory! When they decided to allow San Francisco to influence them, rather than influence San Francisco!
BLUE CHEER has always been it! grace slick? big brother? the dead(boring)? blue cheer:out of focus, help me(doctor), parchman farm. back then? some young mans blues. happy to roll with them as they found peace.
Yeah Phi you were never alone....But I felt the same way about this album. Nobody has ever heard of it. God knows it got zip fer air play. I just bought every Blue Cheer album when I saw em in the record store.
@PhiZappaCrappa Esp. the 5th and 6th BC albums are gaining cult followings. Even Lester Bangs said tracks like these were unusually Psychedelic for the time. Gary Yoder did some interesting things, Dickie said it was'nt Blue Cheer , fair enough , but , a lot of it was unusual.
@pfordsq BC wuz alot of things for me at different times. I bought each LP as they came out and I feel that my musical horizons expanded w/ each. From actually recording a party at my parents' house on dad's Webcor reel-to-reel, spinnin' "Vincibus Eruptum" in '68 to my 8-track copy of "Oh! Pleasant Hope!" in my car at college in '75. They certainly made my life my more 'full'. Dig? ;-)
@PhiZappaCrappa Dig ya deep. There's a lot more people , today , who are fans of all , or most , of the 6 Phillips LPs. A lot of people like the last two albums , because you had all these different personalities fighting it out fo supremacy, and Dickie often losing control of the reigns.....But, the B.C. that was mostly Yoder's band , with Mayell contributing some unusual material , was oftentimes strong , taken on it's own terms.
@pfordsq BUT , THERE'S MORE... A lot of talent went thru that band. The power trio was too volatile a combination to last . Holden is a monster Guitarist , but he would've taken over the band , it seems. The Mint Tattoo LP you may love or hate , I always found it interesting. If that'd been more the direction BC had gone with Bruce and Ralph...They only really dabbled in "Country Rock" , a song here and there....I found a German Cassette of "Oh ! Pleasant Hope" recently.
@pfordsq I didn't know alot of that history (thanks!), and in retrospect it makes sense to me now. Lotsa my peers at the time were divided about this seminal S.F. R&R band, many losing interest when the 'heavy metal' thing changed. Now don't get me wrong, I've always been big-time into 'hard rock', but BC was diff'rent = I wuz into every album! The sitar, the country thing, the electronics. Don't laugh at me, but I've always likened them to an Amerikan Pink Floyd.
@eurorocker79 That , we do. Dickie brought a lot of humor , and , yes , love , to the table. He was really concerned about all of us , the ones who were smart enough to catch their devastating later gigs , which sometimes only drew about 50 people. But , it was always fun , and they still took chances. Dickie was a no - bullshit guy. If something was wrong , he'd tell you , but not take it out on you. I don't think he regretted a thing.
19 years old racin' across the Pennsylvania turnpike at superlegal speeds in a twin-cam Italian cockmobile, the cabin choked with crappy Mexican dope smoke, this bad boy playin' over and over on the 8-track! Gawddamn! The cool thing was that I *knew* I'd always remember it! "Do you see my light, baby?"
@trbblle Dickie Peterson pretty much invented metal and stoner rock. He was WAY more influential than he was ever given credit for. Rock and roll won't be the same without him around and I really miss him.
oh man thanks for posting this one...i belive you are the only on youtube with this song...two years i tried looking for it here but didnt find it...but now i see someone has posted it...thanks again!
I love Dickie Peterson. An incredible man he was and will always be, Not to be forgotten.
