  • schweitzer has been good for montana. you should have seen the way the gop acted at the state level here this last session. one proposed declaring global warming beneficial to agriculture due to long growing seasons and higher year round temperatures. thats embarassing. looking at the candidates for when he's term limited makes me worry. and he's right about green energy. we have like 16,000 times the landmass germany does and they have 6,000 times the renewable energy.

  • This guy is giving the Federal Government hell at the moment. Even now, the state of Montana is making other states look bad when it comes to deficits. I never thought there was such a thing as a states' rights democrat, but this is one democrat I would not hesitate to vote for.

    Look up his stances on the REAL ID and the recent signing of the Montana firearms sovereignty bill. The man has balls.

  • I'm a conservative for a constitutional republic. Yep, that's a real republican. I voted for Schweitzer this time because he is quite conservative and told the Fed to pretty much fuck off and die when it came to Habeas Corpus, the Patriot Act and RealID.

    We accepted his oath of office and he will protect our state constitution and the constitution of America.

  • I only wish we could have won the Electoral vote for Obama but it was close. You can blame my county for that. Yellowstone country is the largest in population in the state but has traditionally voted Republican. Although it was much closer then even I was expecting. At least Brian got back in for a second term though. This in and of itself is unusual in that he won by a very large majority and yet we went for McCain. The state Capital even went for Obama. I just can't figure it out.

  • The problem is that the Democrats (including Obama) think that corporations actually pay taxes; i.e.; the great "new" idea of implementing "windfall profits taxes on big oil companies". One example of this strategy that failed miserably is when Jimmy Carter tried it in the late '70's. All the oil companies did was reduce production, the supply dried up, the gas prices went up and the consumer suffered. When any corporation is taxed, they simply pass along their cost to the consumer (us).

  • I am 3rd generation Montanan. I voted for George Bush twice. In America's darkest days he made the tough calls and I won't kick him because it has become popular. Having said that, Brian Schweitzer is my governor and I can say that he is the best governor we have ever had. I agree with this speech very much, we cannot continue to send our money to the terrorist our children are fighting so that we can drive SUVs with one person in them. We need to be free of oil.

Booms and busts of the oil economy won't solve the state's problems (Most of that oil IS in ND). Think a little ahead, like I said, repubs only think one move ahead.   • Life is great in Montana, but with one of the lowest starting salaries for teachers we probably won't be around for long. WY starts their teachers at $42k, we can start as low as $20k. The difference? They have less restrictions on new gas and oil drilling. He might brag up the Bakken, yes that's how you spell it, but North Dakota is kicking MT butt in new wells. If he was really excited about the Bakken, he would push for less red tape to increase drilling and spend the tax revs on education.

  • Only was able to stand a few minutes of this. I am from the great state of Montana, born and bred. I spent 4 years in Colorado and 8 in Wyoming so I have only 2 years with this governor and have a limited knowledge of his predecessors. But,from what I have seen, this is classic Brian, loving the spotlight. The last 2 years, the only graduations he attended, to my knowledge, had only one student in the class, which has brought big headlines. I wonder if we will be smart enough to vote him out.

  • Remember under our last Democratic President we were actually a strong nation! We had the longest and largest period of uninterrupted economic growth in HISTORY! Bush ruined all of that. Now we have record deficits, record unemployment, and the only period of falling wages since the Great Depression. That is what moron Republicans get you. Thanks to FDR and his social "experiment" the depression was prolonged. Check out any basic economic book to educate yourself about Adam Smiths's "invisible hand" and how the solutions of government lead to worse problems.   • The problem is that while the economy is growing slightly and unemployment is still low, the benefits are not reaching average Americans. Earnings are flat while inflation is on the rise, meaning that in terms of real dollars most people are making less money than they did a few years ago. The economy looks OK if judged by certain narrow criteria (i.e. cherrypicking), but it's actually pretty dysfunctional.

I wish I had switched to CNN-- I tried all the other stations to hear Brian Schweitzer- I'm a Montanan and I KNOW how cool this guy is; I couldn't hear the speech on MCNBC, CBS, or ABC. Even PBS had their talking heads with their BS. Thank goodness for YouTube.

  • Actually, CNN did cut to Schweitzer's speech starting slightly before the part where Schweitzer began talking about fossil fuels (it's here on YouTube) and stayed to the very end of it, where he got everyone in the Convention to stand up. They didn't get the veery beginning of it, but they cut to him the MOMENT they realized what was going on. They probably go the biggest part of the speech, with the exception of C-SPAN, of course.

When our soldiers in the 163rd came home from Iraq, he met every plane that landed in Washington (state) then went from airport to airport around the state to shake each soldiers hand and say thank you. He and the legislation passed a bill to make sure that any veteran of ANY war was entitled to free tuition in Montana. (long before the feds even considered it). He cares about his state and everyone in it. Montana is lucky to have him!!!
