great video! i have tried all this and my knits just get stuck in one spot. the fabric definitely doesn't move on it's own like this, and it's driving me insane! i checked that the feed dog is going up and down and it is. i don't know why this isn't working for me....grrrrr! help?
@gypsytribal Have you checked that your walking foot is working properly? Other things you might need to try are making sure the weight of your ballpoint or stretch knit needle is right for the weight of your fabric, if the thread is the right weight as well and if you're using a new needle. Also if you start too close to the beginning or the edge it can get stuck.
I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask this, but I'm looking for video games about fashion. I know there's Fashion Flight and the Fashion Fantasy Game, but are there any others? In particular, I'm looking for something that has a sewing center like the Fashion Fantasy Game.
@JsEstar I have a 12 year old brother embroidery machine. It's called a Super Galaxie 2000 here in Australia but it was known in the US as the ULT 2000, I believe.
I've been having sewing lessons and I didn't know you had to use a special stretch foot, so that's very useful! I get the zig zag stitch (I was taught that too), but how do you neatly finish the edges of the seams without an overlocker?
Thanks for the video. What sewing machine do you recommend for a first time sewer that is going to only sew stretchy material but doesn't want to spend a lot of money?
Thank you so much for a truly informative, well-thought-out video on sewing stretch! I wish I'd seen your video 2 months ago when I first started sewing my daughter's skate dresses!!

Thank you for sharing this video. I've been trying figure this out since my serger tension is driving me crazy. I know I can do this now with my overlock. Cheers.
thank you for this video. Do you have a video or tips for making a hem with spandex type fabric? I need to make a dance costume and don't have a serger and I'm worried that when I make the turned under, 1/4 inch hem that it will be messy. Any tips you have will be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
Thank you!! I'm going to get me a walking foot now. I made a skirt with just a regular ol' foot and straight stitch and the fabric's all puckered and it even ripped in two places where the gores are attached (but it has lasted quite a few months). I didn't know any better, but I do now! I'm taking the skirt apart and will sew it the right way now. THANK YOU!!
Thank you for this video! I'm trying my hand at making some wrap dresses for the fall and I'm not familiar with using a stretchier material. This helps tremendously!
Hi. Great job. You spoke very clearly. Thank you for your hard work!
When sewing tights, are we supposed to use a certain kind of thread? I've noticed that sewing with polyester or ordinary nylon thread doesn't seem to allow for a proper stretch.
Fabulous Thank you, now I can use up all my stretch fabrics and buy stretch fabrics with confidence that I can make a lovely one off outfit! Wonderful!
My machine has a 'knit stitch'. I noticed yours did too (shown at 1:02, fourth stitch from left, top row) - could I get the same results with this stitch?
Yep, mine has several stretch stitches. Unfortunately they make thinner stretch knit fabrics all wavy. I don't mind that on a seam that's always stretched (tights for example), but it doesn't look good on something that has to stretch and then go back into shape.
It's a Brother Super Galaxie 2000 embroidery machine, I think it was called the ULT 2000 or something in the US. It's about 11 years old but aside from slight tension issues with the embroidery it's a decent machine. You need to use REALLY good thread for large embroideries though.
I am going to use jersey fabric for a top I am making. The directions say to stretch the fabric by hand if using single stitch. If you use zig-zag it says to use a narrow stitch , medium length, trim to 1/4 " and overcast edges together by machine, whatever that means. I have an old 401a Singer.
extremely helpful =] thanks =]

@tmrippey1 Your local sewing machine shop or repairer should be able to help you find one.

@eugenetswong The zig zag stitch is what lets it stretch. You don't need any particular kind of thread.

To overcast the edges you can just zig-zag over them :)
