  • you should build the same kind of semi-enclosure for the mid/tweeters just like you did for the woofers and you'll get much better miss mids

  • I got to admit not bad at all, Good job.

  • don't let the haters discourage you, this sounds awesome!

  • Not bad for open baffle cabinets. Nice setup man.

  • Nice ! im very impressed with the lively soundstage. I my self own B&W 802D and Rotels , and i must say , for speakers on a stick , they have an excellent sound .

  • sound like speakers on a stick to me.

  • @Soothsayerman Thats what they are, speakers on a stick. But do they sound $106,900 worse than the YG Anat?

  • YOUR AMP TUBE TYPE is good and oval speakers paper cone vintages .. amazing still sound good and the tweeter i prepare horn type and the player must be vinyl records ... it's mellow sounds .. my opinion ,thanks guys

  • They are kind of cute :) LOL. I would have put the small and large driver closer together....unless the crossover point is quit low (if there is a crossover). Either way, for what it is, sounds pretty lively to me :)

  • boomy bass and hollowed out midrange. It's actually quite annoying.

  • @rw5791 Thank you for your opinion. Could you post a video of your system so I will know how good audio should sound? Best wishes.

  • nice project!

  • Dude i want that Song lol

  • can you please tell us all what that song is? it is very nice. btw, can you tell me were i can buy some of those 7x11's. i know it's a long shot, but hey, mybe there is some one who knows what they got. i am sure that i could dress them up nicely enough given i had them to play with. thanks!

  • hold on to those old papercones, people. The mother of tone is in those drivers. I have a pair of russian 4GD-35s, made way back in the 50s, when the world knew ever so little about something called: cost efficency. And on an open baffle, they sound just so sweet...

but using a EPS board as a baffle...sure does make me wonder, is there any coloration left?

  • Hi Tartupets,

Could you tell me more about your Russian paper cones? Interesting! Any pics? Yes the styrofoam baffles do resonate at around 50hz giving me an extra 10db that I dont get with wood baffle of the same size. I now use two drivers 'stacked' back to back wired dipole for cleaner transients. The list of modern drivers these 7x11 Grundigs have beat is growing, now including Audio Nirvana 8 inch and 10 inch, Tang Band W8-1808 and Eminence Alpha with a variety of full range drivers.

  • @audiobuzz google 4ГД-35.gray, round with 4 tabs is the one. 120-12500Hz, 4 ohm, 4W, Qts. 1.4. Treated for better mid-high range response. Comes between visaton BG20 and B200 from the sound quality. Has 92db/1W senstivity, while B200 has 96. But has a calm, nice sound compared to the BG20. Maybe e-bay has some...

  • @tartupets I had a pair of 60 litre particle board cabinets with 2x7 1/2 inch woofers and a single 2 1/2 inch tweeter. 2 way crossover, extremely simple in design. Topped with an old Philip's amplifier they sounded darn good, plenty of bass (for bass fiends) and a reasonable amount of treble for those classical albums.

A note about this video though, Oval Cones? Seriously? They don't pull/push evenly...

  • That sounds beautiful!

  • Those Sound AMAZING . i might try my own open baffle project

  • fake bass...used electronic crossover!!!

  • @audiophile347

Yes I did, the Behringer 24/96 DEQ. However, it sounds more 'real' because there is no resonances as heard with typical boxed speakers. I also have used the 15" Eminance Alpha woofers with no digital EQ and no box. They give more bass than these little Grundig woofers, but sound 'slower', probably because the 15" has higher mass and large QTS value.

  • @audiobuzz You're the only one I've seen that agrees with me about the Alpha15 so far. They DO sound slow and tubby because of that tiny magnet.

  • @transdrole

    Hi Transdrole,

Yes, I have 4 Alphas that I have configured every imaginable way... they just can't do the 'stick strike' that these Grundigs can do. If you know of any modern production woofer that sounds as good and can handle around 20W let me know please. For now I am running 4 Grundigs / channel, they sound quick and real. Cheap looking and ugly though! Most would throw them in the trash before wiring them up for a listen.... shame.

  • @audiobuzz I use the Jensen C15k bass guitar speaker for this application but they only go down to around 60hz (fs 73) on OB. I use a Pyle PA 15 amplified separately for 30-60. The Jensens are the very best mid and upper bass drivers I've ever heard.

The pyles may be cheap but with a high quality amp they really kick.

  • Audiogon.whatever.they don't sound that good

  • I must say that your speakers have more bass then the audison.I'm kinda surprised it sounds that good.thumb up

  • It always amazes me how those "hifi" drivers from the 70's can sound. I'm listening to a set of open baffles with some old drivers that were scavenged from a console. I'm into them for less than $30 and they blow away any other speaker I've owned in terms of tone, dynamics and depth.

  • @JohnnyGrass I fully agree.

  • Morel 6*9"?

  • Do you have an open baffle drop compensation circuit hooked up to the woofers, or is it all eq? What kind of in room bass response do you get with and without the eq?

  • @clutch1245 Each woofer has a single 1st order inductor. The FF85K are run full-range. The room is very large with 12ft ceilings and a stairway that acts a a bass trap. The frequency response of the room is very flat. The digital EQ is necessary with these little Grundig woofers. My latest video shows my current system using additional 4 x 15" baffle-less drivers that allows for no digital EQ.

  • Gottal love Gregg Brown!

  • @engjds I guess I have been wasting my time. My system obviously is terribly inadequate. I will say that these speakers sound better than my Gallo Reference 3 which are Six Moons Total Eclipse reviewed.

I like your analogy of audio and fine wine. Just like a fine wine you have to know your own palate. Letting others opinion dictate what sounds good will result in dissatisfaction. I encourage you to discover for yourself what truly sounds good.

  • Fact that people are listening and making comment on the sound is laughable, the drivers are nothing that special, the bottom drivers look like hifi from the 70's

  • @engjds You are right, my system is nothing special. Lets hear your system.

  • Hi @audiobuzz, you dont need to listen or be a genius to know they will sound poor compared to a proper loudpeaker.

For a start your drivers do not appear to have any enclosures so the front radiation will be destroyed by the rear radiation, also the frequency response will be very uneven without an enclosure to reduce air complience.

  • @engjds

Not if the drivers have the right parameters.

  • @engjds uh its called OPEN BAFFLE look it up

  • Also whats the point trying to review a pair of loudspeakers through another pair of speakers?, its like mixing 2 wines together and then trying to review the taste of 1..impossible.

  • @audiobuzz nothing special That system LOOKS SO AWSOME how could any one say not special .

  • @engjds Even in youtube you can hear all the box coloration in generic speakers. These have none of that. That's why it sounds very clean. compare this clip with those of sonus faber, YG, whatever you name it.

    btw. use headphones.

  • It gets my Lampizator's seal of approval

  • possibly the best sound on YT - whats your helper woofer? - are they biamped? - if so where/slopes/method? - - I'm a Karlson-coupler-addict and found a bit of happiness with FE206EN in the little 1954 12" cabinet.

  • very good for diy and boredom but im impressed with the thought sound is actually sweet

  • lol... sounds much more open than YG !

  • that's nicely made! i have a question about DIY speakers: how do you make the crossovers? do you make them yourself, or can i buy crossovers with active crossover options?

  • Those are the little 3 inch Fostex FF85K. The song is 'Loneliness House by Greg Brown'. Sound is surprisingly good.

  • haha, Funny, but Sounds not bad!

    Are those little fostex drivers?

What is te name of the song?

    Grtz!
