The whole series is is full of trite truths and superficial platitudes. Sorry to hear that a major scientist can come up with nothing more profound than this.
@iuoboe Please see or at least hear his most recent series. Solidly put together, it builds and takes further these admittedly basic concepts. Remember that what may be old news or trite to one, may be the keys to a new life for another. Swimme grows, like any good scientist, and uses each piece as the foundation for further and deeper understanding in a later piece.
what of coevolution, mutually beneficial relationships and the contentions that more is gained through cooperation than through competitive motivation or conflict. no doubt competition over limited resources meant some species died so others could live, but i think the argument is that based on the outcomes of the system, not consequences for individual species necessarily, it is this point he makes earlier about human inability to know his place that has led to an imbalance in the system
This series is cool, but it's a little bit Pollyanna. Evolution is driven by competition for LIFE. That is, survivors kill or out compete the ones who die. This is sort of glossed over. If we are conscious beings taking control of the planet, then we are also taking control of who and what dies. This is not something we have choice about, it comes with the territory.
Think of the story of Adam and Eve by eating of the fruit, we became like god we choose what lives and what dies.
Swimme speaks more about the 'balance' . It goes without saying that there are species that fall to enable other species to evolve further. Not so sure we have enough of a grasp of the 'balance' as a species to control what dies without meeting our own demise inadvertently.
Actually competition is only speculation. It sounds non-mythological, because myth usually means religion, but if you think about it and do some research, there was never any theory/experiment proving(not strengthening) this competition theories, it is pure speculation, and as it is a reaction to christian dogma, it is more a cultural product than an scientific insight.
@psusac Hi from Wellington New Zealand. Do you still think that humans, as a species, are fully conscious? I don't, and I think that is a large part of the issue.
@philg379 I don't know what "fully conscious" means. I'm an interovert, so I'm pretty self-aware, but I'm not so good at noticing what is going on with others. My Girlfriend is an extrovert. She is EXCELLENT at reading people in groups.
This illustrates that "conscious" is a broad term with a lot of different parts. A person is bound to have strengths and weaknesses in these parts.
I don't think "fully conscious" is a meaningful term.
@psusac " Self aware, but not good at noticing ...others?" I suggest you contemplate this comment. You can't be truely self aware if you don't know what is going on with others. Try reading Martin Bubers classic ' I and Thou '. Merry Christmas
Capitalist command and control of all resources both human and material are holding us back. Power is self corrupting and seeks to expand it's control wherever and whenever possible.
How do you change the structures of control with the present military structure in place?
How do you tell greedy fux to stop exploiting the poor for their own personal gains?
How do people stop the exploitation with the global media promoting crime, racism, wars, death, destruction and fear?
A combination of growing global awareness in conjunction with the coming economic collapse. Where we go from there is too hard to tell, but whatever it is, the natural balance will one day be returned to this planet.
hmmmm I dunno. it all looks very pretty, this middle class white dude pontificating in front of bluescrren. But who is 'we' and 'us'. is it the scientific philosopher-kings
nowhere in this series does he even mention the evil been done to justify the 'means' of this technological knowledge that is destroying Nature
I know what you mean, but remember remember that its just a presentation. all of this has profound implications for action. There are a lot of eco-socially quite mindless rich white kids in the new movements, but we are just starting on a big scale! And if you want, you can be a part of it and influence it all! Dont oppose, optimize!
what an amazing undertaking! what a privilege! a responsibility! to take responsibility for my-Self, my thoughts, words, decisions, and actions is to influence and help direct the very movement of Life itself. How true is it that we have been given this wonderful gift of CHOICE. A responsibility it IS. I am deeply grateful for this.
