I'd be lying if I said I didn't enjoy Al Green singing that song because he did a nice job. But No Change is Gonna Come when it comes to singing this song in the beat of perfection and that can only be done when it is Sam Cook's voice.
oh My god and all the goodness his body is his instrument and that is what music should be about AL GREEN omg " Beyond the SKY" oh yes it will!!!!!! otis redding is also amazing at this song!!!
This version and Otis Redding's version are the only two I've heard that really capture the spirit of Sam Cooke's original version. Its probably no small coincidence that Booker T & the MGs played the instrumentation for this song for both Al and Otis. Truly spectacular rendition of a timeless classic. Thanks for posting this.
I love this song, and for someone who didn't rehersal this song, I love it. my favorite artist, truely soul. NUMBER 1 from your NUMBER 1 fan. Thanks for posting this.
thanks for posting this...its by far the most enthralling live performance ive witnessed...so inspiring and soulfull...ive replayed over fifteen times today alone!!! being born in 82 i missed out a lot of real music...so im catching up now!!! great video!!!
DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMN....................WOW.......one of my top 3 soul singers of all time................Al Green, Otis Redding and Luther VanDross, but this performance is the best of the best!!
i was born in 64 i been beat down knock down and call NIGGER NOT NIGGA but i have always stood back up this is my crying song . its raw and beautiful............

I don't think this was one of the top live performances ever. IT IS THE GREATEST LIVE PERFORMANCE OF ANY SONG BY ANY ARTIST!! I saw it the night the R/R Concert, I bought the CD and even 15 years later, I get goose bumps when I here this. Many pass over Al as a great African American performer. James Brown, Stevie Wonder, Otis Redding... The competition is the elite of the elite, but no one can grind it out night after night like Al. Bring on the Love Al!!
Been looking for this vid since I heard the recording some 5 years ago, Finally, finally! One of the best preformances I have ever heard, Rev. Green taking the crowd to the limit!!!
Thank you again for taking your time posting this!
Thank you so much for posting this video!!! I watched the original broadcast of this R&R Hall of Fame show. Al's rendition of "A Change is Gonna Come" immediately became the best live performance I'd ever seen!!! I've been looking for this video ever since. I bought the "Ali" soundtrack just because this version was on it.
to me the two verses at the beginning tell it all. born at the river....running like it ever since...good thing that religion can give a hold to many.
Oh man all I can think of is to raise my hand and tell everyone how great God is! I use to listen to Al Green when i was in the world now i can listen to him and praise God for what he's done change n my life. PTL!
God Bless!!! He has to talk in between because he has lived through what he is singing. He feels it down in his soul and he makes my soul feel it too.
Well I heard Aretha and thought..what a terrific song...Sam and thought ...sweet...Otis and thought...from the heart...but this...by Al...all 3 sentiments plus tears !!! Amazing....
BUT on which CD did he release this ?? Anywone know...
Hell yes!! What they don't show in this video is that he actually dropped to both knees full force. Talk about being filled with spirit!! Hands down, best performance I've EVER SEEN.
This was shown on HBO -- Cleveland Ohio, celebrating the grand opening of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Museum in September of 1995. I sat and watched, with my mouth open, and went out and got a LOT of Al Green records afterwards. This is probably my all-time favorite live performance, by anybody, period. Booker T. & The MG's backin' him up, too. Thanks for sharing this!
I remember Rev Green doing this 14 years ago. I am so happy that it has been posted. My favorite version of this song as well. For a great new updated version check out Ben Sollee.
Thanks for posting this. I've been looking for it for the the longest time. I've heard many different versions of this song, Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, Patti LaBelle, Seal, Aaron Neville, etc. They all made the hair on my arms stand up, but this version damn near brought me to tears. Thanx!
