Raul is a very good player... But, Giovanni is incredible!!! Every lick counts, I believe he could beat lightning to the ground when it comes to speed!!! And he only gets better with age!!!

Having a lot of energy does not make a person a better conga player than the other. I think the public just respects Gio for his knowledge and talent. My opinion....Gio was not consistant with his playing, he kept changing his rythem. I don't think this is why Raul couln't keep up with him....I just think he wasn't sure where Gio was going with his rythms. But anyways I feel Raul just respect Gio as well as Gio respecting Raul as percussionist.

I've met Raul in person, he is an amazing player as well as a very friendly and humble guy. I'd say he'd be the first to admit that Giovanni's conga playing is on another level. His playing is incredible. Freaky even. But so what? Raul's abilities on the congas are more than enough to hold the top spot in the Santana band for several decades now. You don't hold a spot in band like that for no reason. There are no passengers in the Santana band.
Yes, Raul probably was a better player back then, but who can stay absolutely at the top of their game for their entire life? Also Raul might have just been having an off day!
When Giovanni is 85 years old I don't think he'll be playing the same as when he was 35.
@inwa Luck has nothing to do with it. Raul was a product of the era he came up in, and he made the most out of his opportunity and interpretation of what the timba meant to him. Gio is an innovator like Tata Guines was back in the day. There's a reason why we call them legends, because it takes a little more than just being good. The NBA has a ton of great players but only 1 Jordan, only 1 Dr. J, only 1 Russell. The same holds true in this field, not every one is going to be an innovator.

Comparing Giovanni and Raul is apples and oranges - both have their styles that make them unique conga players. Many others play and sound like everyone else. Giovanni is extremely articulate; Raul's solos are incredibly melodic and make musical sense (just like any guitar/keyboard/sax solos) especially in Santana's music. I dig both of them.
