Ian Botham was having a go at Michael Beer for taking a wicket of a no-ball at Sydney last night... and here he is in 1985- TAKING A WICKET OFF A NO-BALL!
Probably the most boring ashes test match ever but one I will never 4get!..........made memorable by 1) Gower's inns of 166 2) Saturday's play - truly unforgettable - it was 13th July 1985 - LIVE AID day! People forget that around the same time Queen blew everyone away on bbc1, on bbc2 Botham was creating a rumpus of his own with Umpire Whitehead. Wat a day !
I don't think any batsman has been as pleasing on the eye as David Gower. He was all elegance and timing. To average 44 in a career that coincided with the great West Indies pace attack, plus other legendary bowlers such as Hadlee, Imran and Lillee was a superb effort. He had a reputation for being laid back, but he never flinched when confronted with the pace barrage of the West Indies. A batsman of sheer class!
One of the classiest batsman and my all time favorite!
His cover drive shot, no one can play like him.
In training my coach used to say all the time, you wanna leg glance (flick) like Gavasker, loft over the mid-wicket like Richards and form a cover drive like Gower.
I wonder what he whispered (at 8:47) just in few words, that an angry man like Botham immediately turned into a sheep.
Thanks for this! Being looking for some Gower footage. My fav England batsman -just so classy, and made a lot of runs in the process. Good ol' Gower :)
What a superb batsman was David Gower. Too bad I was a toddler when he was in his prime. His test average of 44 does not take into account the hostile bowling of the West Indies and others and was not as easy as it is today (not giving a knock on today's bowlers but I think it was more intimidating then)
Not to mention today's averages being inflated by taking easy pickings off Bangladesh and Zimbabwe, also the current Windies side; and many a flat pitch that appears more regularly in modern test cricket.
@SATULAL Mate he averaged only 38 in all first class cricket compared to 44 in tests, while he scored 9 tons in 43 ashes tests, with 9 in 71 other tests against all other opposition - talk about a bloke being stimulated by the big time!
I was late primary early high high school when he was in his prime and in the back yard tests i played agianst my kid brother, being a left hand bat myself, Davide Gower was the player I most enjoyed imitating&would concentrate so much harder when he 'came in'!
Paul downton is my second cousin (wicket keeper)

David Gower a very classy cricketer and human being. A bit like Andrew Strauss today another gentleman cricketer. A credit to England team.
