If you consult the history books, humans first interaction with horses was the hunter and the hunted. We ate horses for thousands of years before we ever tried to use one as a beast of burden. I don't eat horse meat, but I do have a sensible outlook on the industry that is inundated with horses and no where for them to go. Do you have the room for them all or are you expecting everyone else to take them in and feed them for the next twenty years of their lives?

I dont mean for this to insensitve but for 23 of the horses this was a turning point in their lives.
Instead of them being sent to the slauughter to be made into glue or dog food. They will be able to find loving homes and hopefully have long happy homes.

This truck crashed near my house! I work on a farm that delivers hay to several of the farms that the living horses where sent to. they called all the area farms looking for a place to put them. we would have taken some but we where full, I did help transport some though. :)

They are stabbed in the back over and over until they die. No fewer horses are being slaughtered..now they suffer longer trailer trips and horrific terror and pain before they finally die. Thats really sad. Its horrible that they got scared so bad, and 11 of them had bad suffering deaths.
But, if I understand correctly.. the other 30 horses went on to lead happy lives and didn't go to slaughter after all right?
So... if the truck didn't tip, all of them would have died.. not just the 11 that did.
Either way, may the 11 who died rest in peace. May the others have happy lives till the end.

it is not just because they want their meat or hair but what bothers me the mst is that those horses could have been given to other people and they sure as hell would have taken them!!!!!!!! one person, and i know this for certain, almost gave their horse to slaughter because he had to have surgery and it left a nasty scar so they couldn't show him. people are stupid because i know that i would have taken him in an instant!!!!!!!!!!!

This truck crashed near my house! I work on a farm that delivers hay to several of the farms that the living horses where sent to. they called all the area farms looking for a place to put them. we would have taken some but we where full, I did help transport some though. :)

Very sad. Slaugher houses in the US have closed. Horses are still sent to slaughter. Now they are shipped to Mexico. No quick bolt to the brain for them. They are stabbed in the back over and over until they die. No fewer horses are being slaughtered..now they suffer longer trailer trips and horrific terror and pain before they finally die. Is this the outcome you hoped for when you fought so hard to ban horse slaugher in the US? I hate the idea of it too, but it is obviously a necessary evil.

Unfortunately- though I hate the thought of slaughtering my favorite animal- it does help leviate some of the population so that others may find good homes. Since breeding control isn't much of an option, we need to push for humane slaughter. That is something we might actually be able to control. Give horses (and other livestock) a good life right up to the end.

It's awful but are cows treated any better? I doubt it. I'm not a vegetarian (nor do I eat horses) but it gets you thinking doesnt it? Why do cows/sheep/etc deserve their awful treatment? I realise a fair amount live a good enough life free of disease and such like but the amount of cruelty that goes on... what can be done? Everyone turn veggie? Wishful thinking I suppose. I know I'd struggle to never eat a burger again!
