@DjTibee you can record it into any DAW provided you have a soundcard. You can sequence it on programs such as Ableton Live, however depending on your ADSR settings it may not sound quite right. There are hardware sequencers available too such as the Future Retro Orb or Analogue Solutions Europa which I would highly recommend. This is really a player's synth though.
Sounds like an expensive toy just to get that sound you were playing around with which can be done in most software synths. Personally I'd only use this for bass.
@maccagrabme this is not just a sound you can achieve with softsynths, it might sound so, but there's still a lot of difference, a moog really cuts in to your mix, it's a bit difficult to describe, but there is a reason this is still one of the most popular synths around...
@maccagrabme I would hardly call it a toy. The whole appeal of analogue synths is the quality of the sound; the idiosyncrasies. I'm a big fan of soft synths (Fabfilter Twin 2, NI Massive) and I use them in my productions all the time, but there is something beautiful about a hands-on instrument.
Great work. I love this demo of the LP. It's also nice to find a vid where someone is not just going up and down the keyboard playing pentatonic scales!
@rockstaragb can't totally tell which modulation setting he has on. but you can see him pull the wheel down. also does sound/look like he's going through a gate. im not 100% sure on account i've never seen this moog in real life
@maxiemclerx I played a new 650$ roland gaia and it sounded like absolute shit. for just 300$ more i bought a used little phatty, and its analog sounds a million times better, totaly worth the extra money
efka is absolutely right. I started with a LP and this synth learned me how synthesis work. You first have to learn how to work with the oscillators, filters etc. Later on i bought a korg ms 10 and i was glad i already knew how synthesis works because the older analog synths are not always easy to understand and to work with to get nice sounds out of it..I am also a great fan of EBM like Front 242 and thats why i'm proud to be Belgian. It all started in our little country.
@ONEyeMarco i see you dropped three of the native instruments softsynth names. coz they are the bomb. have you used dcam soft synths? would like to know how they compare with the NI, albino and rob papens.
@wildcomfort88 I have the dcam softsynths... they sound very warm, and the interface is very easy to work with. only prob i have with it is. it is a bit heavy on the CPU usage... I run a mac and it chews up the cpu.
Ableton, especially cause it's loop and midi clip based but still open and flexible enough to do real songs. Especially for more agressive electronic music that's very good. I use & bought both, sometimes together in rewire mode, but most of the times for composing only one of the two. Depends on the style of music and my mood *g*. For beginners Ableton is cool, for pros it is also cool. It is an ultra flexible piece of solid german engineering (cubase, too). & very good for live performances.
(Part 2 ;) ) you just need time and practice with your Moog, good software that suits your style of music (but you can do more sinister electronic music with almost every software out there although I prefer Ableton Live for my drum & bass and electro stuff and pure cubase for my goth and wave stuff ), good speakers or headphones, perhaps some other stimulators ;) & perhaps a bunch of friends. Just have fun and get some good tutorials from the net concerning analogue synthesis. Rule1:Have Fun!
@IndustrialListener the Moog's monophonic so it 's bloody easy to play :D And I personally think the key towards playing any instrument (I play keys, bass, guit and I sing for about 20 years now, I 'm not good but that is not the point ) is fun & motivation. You even do not need piano lessons (mine were 20 years ago when I was a teenager), you can substitute "sophistication" with a good DIY Punk Rock attitude.
@IndustrialListener: get the new moog, as a beginner, a real analogue vintage synth will be very frustrating. These old machines are sometimes unstable and you have to care for them. And are even more expensive. A vintage synth is cool, I think they still sound the best are a pain in the ass concerning care and repair etc. After the Little Phatty you could check out vintage gear :D but the Moog will not disappoint you, I would have dreamed of starting with a Moog but Casio CZs were cheaper ;)
@IndustrialListener Well cheaper than getting a working and mint condition Korg MS 20 which will always stay the original EBM machine :D But the Moog is more modern and you have all the advantages of a modern synth compared to vintage gear. And it is still analogue so it has punch and warmth.
@discotechwreck that is totally right but the sound aesthetics of the MS 20 is the genre typical sound aesthetics of EBM. But if you want to do modern electronic music too I would definitely buy the Moog. Much more reliable and modern and the LP is affordable. There are few other modern 100% analogue synths out there but I think the Moog LP is the best value for the money.
@DomLagrueMusic yeah if you are a fan of the novation sound the xio is good, I had a K-Station for a while and it was a very good synth, still regret selling it, the novations have a unique sound that I really like
the little phatty seems to have a very distinctive sound or maybe i've just been spending too much time with mine. yeah right! theres never too much time with the little phatty!
Depnds on what budget you have to spend. If your looking for something roughly under under £500 i'd go for the Alesis Micron or Ion. If your willing to spend alot more than this either one of these in this video or KORG M3, Access TI Polar and Nord Modular G2 are a good bet.
You say that the little phatty is not for a beginner. I think the LP is the best learning synth mentioned above because of a very open and intuitive design, simple controlling and instant visual feedback. It also sounds great.
The LP and the Korgs are totally different synths. The Korgs are polyphonic, whilst the LP is monophonic - which is a major difference already. I would consider the Korgs more versatile due to MMT, fx etc
Also, some might find that a moog might be overkill for a beginner

I have to disagree
I think the Korg R3's sound quality is just brilliant (all be it different to the Litte Phatty but nonetheless capable of some very incredible tones)
personally, I feel the LP would be overkill for someone JUST getting into synths
you may not like the sound, particularly the monophonic constraints
consider also that many people initially display enthusiasm for an instrument but eventually forsake it all together
my suggestions would be a Korg MS-10, Roland SH-101 or DSI Mopho

shaft9000 3 years ago
Roland RE-150
the MXR Carbon Copy is a great pedal
would use it over the tape echo to be honest because it doesn't require all the maintenance or a dedicate mains power supply!
you can achieve just about identical sounds to my ears
the new EHX DMM is also another great buy (far more control over the modulation, but loses out on the time available with a Carbon Copy)
for me the real king is the Moog Analog Delay though because of the CV control!
