If they can wait that long, why couldn't they just wait for the proper DVD players to drop down in price?!! PS2 is a very good console, but consoles seem to be getting more about being used as media players than about the actual gameplay these days. Hindsight really is 20/20. They took a gamble and they lost. Still, I can kind of get what Sega must have been thinking. The launch of the Saturn and the launch of the DC are like night and day. You had a decent launch lineup, fairly impressive graphics that were clearly a step up from the current competition, widespread marketing, and a strong, strong start in sales.
Unfortunately, Sega's reputation finally caught up to them, along with the Playstation brand.

The Reason why Saturn didn't do so well in the us was cause of a few reasons Saturnday which made 3rd party developers mad there games were not ready and that the launch date was September not during the time of E3 or 95. And now on to Bernie Stolar who said the following no RPG's for Saturn as they were 2d and didn't sell well in the US. I still love my dreamcast and still play it. Sonic Adventure with the little chao characters is the best. I go down to the swapmeet sometimes and look for dreamcast games. I had never been so excited when i got my dreamcast even though i got the ps2 and xbox when it first came out too.
The problem with the Dreamcast is that while it was pretty good for its time, the majority of its great games except Shenmue, have been ported to other systems. Shenmue 2, Grandia II, Ecco the Dolphin, Maken Shao, the capcom fighting games....and quite a few more.
Personally, I think the Master System and Mega Drive / Genesis have aged better.
Sega killed Sega. With crap like the 32X and Sega CD. I have both systems, but the original price point and mostly crappy games doomed them. Sega fans were torn. "Do we buy the 32X? CD? Or, wait, what's the Saturn that's coming out? Plus they killed the Gamegear with the Nomad. They lost fan support there. They regained some of that with the launch of the Dreamcast (Which I love), but they couldn't last between the two best selling consoles of all time... PS1 and PS2. I do hope for a DC2, heheh.
i reckon sega should come back at the best time now that there hasnt been a console release for a while and they can get back at sony because the ps3 has had minimum sales compared to other consoles

I agree. I've never seen a system absolutely so mis-handled by its creators. Tons of great Saturn games from Japan never made it to USA and PAL areas. They would of gone a long way to keeping the Saturn alive.
It came back to bite Sega when they killed the Saturn off so the Dreamcast could launch. It's a shame that the Dreamcast had to go down with Sega but it was a lesson they really needed to learn: You can't expect people to continually buy new systems when the previous ones don't sell.

the ps2 was NOT more powerful than ps2 .. yes it had DVD option .. but also a 4MB texture memory while Dream has 8mb .. Ps2 has no AA Anti Aliasing .. and Dreamcast's AA is x4 .. thats the reason that alot of DC games got ported to ps2 exceprt one and only .. Shenmue :) a perfect game within 1.5 years of Dream's life ....

I just got a Sega Dreamcast, and I couldn't be happier with the games and the system itself. My old PS2 kept having "DRE's", which made the system less than appealing.
back in 2003 when those DRE's became common sega should've came out with those aggressive ass old school attacks on ps2 and brought back the dreamcast with dvd support.

I've seen consoles made before dreamcast that had better hardware.

please sega dreamcast have exelente hardware sega dreamcast hardly ever have problems until now before 9 year dreamcast give problems like auto reset i have one since 9 years ago and me dreamcast never give problems but looks xbox 360 or ps2 or ps3

I love Dreamcast, but I am not big fan of Sega. But I like Sega and Sonic. :) I have Sonic Mega Collection for PS2 and Gamecube. I love Sonic CD this is best sonic platformer ever on Sonic Gems collection on GCN. :)

And Bernie also stated "there is no more Tekken" meaning that the Ps2 would not get it but it was released for the PS2. Sega was tired of what Bernie did and fired him. Like how he said saturn should of not been released the games were not fun what about nights? This video doesn't tell the whole story. One other factor was that the Dreamcast used GD Roms which people found out how to pirate games and download...

The Reason why Saturn didn't do so well in the us was cause of a few reasons Saturnday which made 3rd party developers mad there games were not ready and that the launch date was September not during the time of E3 or 95. And now on to Bernie Stolar who said the following no RPG's for Saturn as they were 2d and didn't sell well in the US. That bothers the Hell outta me, Sega! Why would you make games for a company that killed you!? Not to be an asshole or anything, but why would you? And you have to make another system some day. I mean, just add a DVD player, better online or do anything to make sure it's successful. I am a Nintendo fan, but I do love the Dreamcast... I can see a little bit of Dreamcast in today's systems... Especially the 360.

I still love my dreamcast and still play it. Sonic Adventure with the little chao characters is the best. I go down to the swapmeet sometimes and look for dreamcast games. I had never been so excited when i got my dreamcast even though i got the ps2 and xbox when it first came out too.

The problem with the Dreamcast is that while it was pretty good for its time, the majority of its great games except Shenmue, have been ported to other systems. Shenmue 2, Grandia II, Ecco the Dolphin, Maken Shao, the capcom fighting games....and quite a few more.
Personally, I think the Master System and Mega Drive / Genesis have aged better.

Sega killed Sega. With crap like the 32X and Sega CD. I have both systems, but the original price point and mostly crappy games doomed them. Sega fans were torn. "Do we buy the 32X? CD? Or, wait, what's the Saturn that's coming out? Plus they killed the Gamegear with the Nomad. They lost fan support there. They regained some of that with the launch of the Dreamcast (Which I love), but they couldn't last between the two best selling consoles of all time... PS1 and PS2. I do hope for a DC2, heheh.

I agree. I've never seen a system absolutely so mis-handled by its creators. Tons of great Saturn games from Japan never made it to USA and PAL areas. They would of gone a long way to keeping the Saturn alive.
It came back to bite Sega when they killed the Saturn off so the Dreamcast could launch. It's a shame that the Dreamcast had to go down with Sega but it was a lesson they really needed to learn: You can't expect people to continually buy new systems when the previous ones don't sell.

the ps2 was NOT more powerful than ps2 .. yes it had DVD option .. but also a 4MB texture memory while Dream has 8mb .. Ps2 has no AA Anti Aliasing .. and Dreamcast's AA is x4 .. thats the reason that alot of DC games got ported to ps2 exceprt one and only .. Shenmue :) a perfect game within 1.5 years of Dream's life ....

reasons why DC failed it wasn't bad hardware it wasn't bad software it wasn't because it had a bad controller
1. No third party support
2. No Copy Protection
3 The PS2 was not only way more powerful but had DVD capabilities
4 and the biggest reason why it failed? NO BRAND LOYALTY after sega's past failures people no longer trusted Sega
The DC was a great system but Sega made too many bad choices and it came back to bite them in the ass right when they had a good system

Such memories. Cannot be compared with PS2 waaayyy better than PS2 regardless its specs being worse. It was a 1998 system lets not forget. Still MAGICAL capabilities. Now the only thing I will not except is that SEGA Saturn was a failure and a doom and worse shouldn't be launched!! This guy is totally INSANE and has no idea about videogames and SEGA itself! Saturn is one of SEGA's truest and best consoles I will not explain why everyone should know! If only SEGA was in hardware these days...

I just got a Sega Dreamcast, and I couldn't be happier with the games and the system itself. My old PS2 kept having "DRE's", which made the system less than appealing.

actually, the 64 lost(in sales) to the ps1, and the gamecube lost horribly to the ps2 and x box. if nintendos next console wasnt a hit, they probably would have gone under like sega. but we all know how that story turned out...

If so many ppl love the dreamcast like me then why did it fail? cos of DVD? really GAMES count not movies, same with BLU-RAY PS3 , okay it helps more storage but dreamcast was STRICTLY gaming, now consoles have something to do with accessing movies and shit which can be done on a PC. DReamcast was a TRUE gaming machine because that what it was, no add ons, no DVDS just games.
