  • Again I write- the rendition of this classic song by Kai and that All Star back up group is hauntingly beautiful .

  • thats my grandpa i still have his exact trombone

  • @156Charrette Hi and thanks for your comment. I was lucky enough to see Kai play just once, in New York, beautiful music. Jim.

  • there is also a great cd with him and rosolino, ake persson, urbie green, erik van lier live in holland in the seventies

  • @posaunist5 You forgot Slide Hampton, who I drove back to his hotel in Amsterdam after one of those sessions...also brought Frank R. to a legal hashish club in Hilversum, where the sessions were recorded.......hung out with everyone at a party at Eric's house.....there was an LP cut at the same time...can't seem to be able to find the name..oh well, it will surface!

  • i met kai in holland app 1981 with curtis fuller. they just had dinner. he was very nice. he also played there with lionel hamptons allstar band and played some beautiful solos. great player. there is a great record from this all-star tour that he did. it's called : the giants of jazz .. there is also sonny stitt playing on it. i think young jazz tromonists would be well advised to listen to kai. in the end he creates beautiful music. an underrated jazz soloist on the trombone.

  • Beautiful -absolutely!

  • Had to change my pants when I found this video. Kai Winding is awesome.

  • was that dizzy on trupmet????

  • I'm guessing this kind of delicacy on the trombone is a lost, or at least fading, art......and that its greatest masters were nurtured by the big band era....blending into the age of great jazz groups of the '40's through 60's........ There's not a matrix like that now for young trombonists.

  • i have a version of jj johnson playing this at the blue note. kai winding and jj johnson both played it incredibly well, but had two different approaches. they are truly two of the greatest jazz trombonists to ever have lived.

  • He gave Stan Kenton his "SOUND". Stan fought it at first, but the musicians loved it and persisted!! Wonderful.

  • Unusual embrouchure. Plays with his lower lip, not the upper.

  • Thelonious Monk piano, Al McKibbon bass.

  • Is that Art Blakey on the drums ?

  • @fetze Yes, It is Art Blakey. Thanks, Jim

  • @fetze

Yes, Dizzy was the trumpet player.

    Jim

  • Wow this guy is great! until now I've only listened to J.J.Johnson and Don Drummond in the way of trombonists.

  • WTF! his low B naturals are in tune! thats freakin impossible lol....this guy rules he is an inspiration to me to become a better trombonist

  • Fantastic.

  • GREAT!

  • Younger people don't know about Kai Winding. One of the greatest trombonists. His work with JJ Johnson and lots of others. His sound really established the solo trombone sound that Kenton used from the 40s onward. He did a lot of very commercial stuff, but even that was good.

  • @pindaric I wanted to say, "You're crazy" cuz I followed almost all those cats but you're right. America's premier art form is taking a back seat while the japanese put it on the fore-front. (That statement is not a prejudice one seeing as I'm a big fan of The Seatbelts and the Masaru Uchibori Big Band)

  • Beautiful ! Saw and heard him and his group of trombone players here in Baltimore in the early '60's-whew ,how time flies !

  • Is this 1961 in Newport?

  • No, it is from a concert in Rotterdam, Holland in 1971.

  • are u sure? hes stood in front of a massive banner sayin newport jazz festival

  • Yes, I'm sure. The banner was a sales ploy for the European Tour.

    Jim
