The look on Viv Savage's (keyboardist) face at 0.53 always kills me! I remember going to see this film back in the early eighties when it first came out. It is still one of my favourite films and, much to my children's embarrassment, I can virtually recite the whole film script verbatim. A classic
interesting how metal bands are the only ones who do performances for military personels. Metallica 1991 for the soviet army in monsters of rock (partial citizens) and Disturbed 2008 in Kuwait for US troops. is this a depiction of that that spinal tap conveys in this secene or just one of the efficacies of this film. I stringly believe that Metallica did get the idea of the Black Album from Spinal Tap's Black Album. agree?
@malkneil its not an intercom, his rig is picking up RF energy. As a guitarist i know how frustrating it is. I get pissed off too hahaha had to get rid of pedal because of it
We are such fans of your music, not yours personally but the whole genre of the rock n' roll and all of the exciting things happening in music today. lol
We were told to hangout in the big hanger where there was light refreshments. I actually was one of the few who noticed they were filming as they came into the hall . So I made sure I was in the range of the camera. Also the actors at the time were not very well known. Also this was one of Reiner's first Directed film as an actor on All in the Family!. They weren't a big deal or of little interest to most of us. And who knew this small film was going to be a big cult hit at the time.
oh that happened to me once, i was playing south of heaven by slayer on my guitar and i left it and came back and my amp was blasting some random christian radio station, i was like "ITS A SIGHN!"
Wireless systems back then operated just above the standard FM broadcast frequency. That's also where the aircraft communication frequencies begin. Aircraft/tower transmissions would very likely be picked up by the wireless system. These guys didn't miss any details.
Yes, I know it's the basis for the joke. I've had to explain this entire scene to too many people who don't understand what's going on and why it's funny. ( What the voices are, why Nigel's pissed at Jeanine etc). The only people who seem to "get it" are either musicians and/or people who are around aircraft. Or maybe I just need to find a better informed class of friends.
All the people I've had to explain it to. It seems obvious to me too that anyone would understand but surprisingly a lot of people don't. Maybe I just know a lot of stupid people.
@at1simp Some years earlier than this movie, my dad was the organist at a church that had an electric organ that picked up a country station - right in the middle of the preacher's sermon. Some years later, they stuffed that organ full of TNT, took it out to the parking lot, and blew it up.
Another church in a town I used to work in had an problem where their sound system - especially their instruments - would pick up radio chatter from the strip club next door. Made things awkward at times.
OK...go at 1:33 I'm the afro guy in the white suit & tie (Out of focus just over his shoulder. then later at 2:04 I'm sitting right behind the guitar neck (again out of focus). finaslly at 2:18 my head is at bottom of screen. hee hee! I'm famous!
Amazing to see these same three rockers as the Folksmen in A Mighty Wind -another brilliant and hilarious Christopher Guest film-where these guys are folk musicians doing their folk hit Old Joes Place.
To be fair Jeannine had been annoying him for a while before that, this must've been the final straw. But yeah, it's very out of character, seeing how much he treasures all his guitars...
'The idea is that we get it on and... get it over with.'
