Options and stock list depends on the country you live in. In Belgium for example, LSD was optional... ;) Even power steering was optional... Wich I know is stock in USA...

what the fuck are you talking about. there is NO difference between a 91 318i and 318is engine. there both M42s the only difference between the 2 was the 318is ONLY came as a standard.

any i and is all have the same engine unless its an M and E or an ES so please dont come on a youtube video and think you know it all. the only reason i posted my comment 1 or 2 years ago was i was new to the E30 game and all of my 318is had LSD.

lol between these 2 cars there completely different. the 320 is an M20 2.0 liter 6 cyl and the 318is is the M42 4 cyl so no fucking shit there different.

ive had 2 318is 2 early 318i and now have a late 325i

in the us all the 1991 cars had the M42 (1.8 liter 4 cyl DOHC 16v and all m20 cars (325i.e.is.es) are 12v SOHC so how am i a dope? please explain this to me u fucking retard. thanx for trying though.

318i has M40, the IS has M42, the only E30 to cary this engine.

I dont know where you are getting your information, and I was harsh to call you a dope I apologise, but you are getting the wrong end of the stick somewhere. Im talking about the 91 model year too. Sure the M42 is identical to M40, but for valves and cams design. Maybe it was different in the US. But yeah you aint a dope, sorry about that. Peace. (btw I have a 318i and an IS, both 91, sitting outside right now)

This was not the case in Europe man, thats where people are getting confused. You were right on that, and i apologise again for snapping at ya.

Makes me wonder how they sold any 318i if the IS had the same motor and a nicer body kit and things. Where was the benefit in buying the 318i? Unless it was for some reason MUCH cheaper than the IS.

Oh and also the LSD was an option in the US i believe. 4:10 ratio small case form, which I THINK was standard in Europe. Mine certainly has this.

I cant see someone buying an IS in the US, over a 318i with the same engine and then going for an open diff lol. But Im sure it did happen.

mine had the 4.10 lsd and the main difference in the us is the seats front and rear spoiler and iS was only 5 spd

The 320 should be and is faster than a 318is. My 91 E30 320i is much faster than my best mates 318is and even though the 318is has m-tech suspension and is lighter in the real world it doesn`t have the torque of the 6cyl 320 so it stay`s behind in the bends. BMW`s own spec`s for these cars say the 320 reaches 62mph in under 9 seconds and the 318is takes almost 10.

Nope - BMW quotes 125 lb-ft for the last E30 320i and 127 for the 318is at lower rpm too. So the 320i has less power, less torque and more weight than the 318is which in practically everybody's hands, is quicker.  And about half as consumptive.

if you look up specs, the 318is has 10 ft/lbs less tourqe, firstly they have diffrent tourqe and bhp peaks, and secondly there both on difrent ratios, in the gear box and diff. so the tourqe is used much more better in the 6cyl then the 4cly. ive had both and there around the same. while a mate has a red 318is e30, i had a black 320i now i had more moles on the clock, and he hardly ragged his were i went skidding, i kept on his arse but couldnt pull up or overtake

That was an interesting comparison.

I've always been a big fan of the 6-cylinder BMW's (I've had an E30 320 and two 325s and now have a Z3 3.0).

But the 318is is clearly the quicker car - despite the 320 setting off marginally earlier. The 318is also appears to have a much closer ratio gearbox and is lighter, so is probably the better driver's car...

...but you can't beat that 6-cylinder sound!
