  • A great song. And as a musician (clarinet player), I think this is a beautifully sad and sensitive version. It doesn't quite have Townes' unique gravitas (for want of a better, less pretentious word) but no other version than his really has. This one is lovely in its own right - beautiful phrasing and timing, and you hit the notes just right! David

  • I love this song. The Be Goods put me on to it too. I usually look for covers that are not as good as me and I think "I can do better than that" and it inspires me to try harder. So I have nailed it with a bit of wailing harmonica but your version is awesome and I am just an old man. Riffski Tilbury No Country for Old Men

  • since you seem to like feedback I'm going to give my opinion here. you sound great, you play smooth and you have a very nice voice but I think you're holding back. think of the darkest, saddest moment in your life before playing this song the next time and tell me how it sounds.

  • beautiful....the songs great too

  • I've come back to this after about a year. It remains one of the best covers I've found for any song on Youtube. Hope you're still pursuing your talent...

  • Beauty job. Vantastic.

  • Nice variation. Better to to what's in your head than try and sound like TVZ and do it badly which is about 80% of the songs posted on YT.

  • Great picking! Don't know that I liked the vocal arrangement all that much, but you have a sweet voice. I'll be viewing your other covers soon (I hope there are some!)

  • Very good; inspiring. Thank you.

  • thanks

  • Nice version.

  • Don't listen to that 1994 person....I think you did an excellent job, wonderful picking. I've been playin his tunes for a while now to and I'm a girl :). Perhaps you should sing it slower? To really get into the depression of the song.

  • simply amazing. great job.

  • well done, thanks for sharing

  • this is a great cover. thanks for this.

  • Sadly beautiful

  • This is an awesome interpretation! Check out our cover of "Lungs" - hope you like it.

  • Great song choice ! I like your subtle voice and the humming. There is just a nice sincere softness to it. The cover is really exceptional.

  • excellent version

  • Awesome!!

  • be good.

  • Beautiful. Your voice carries this song well.

  • Don't know how to say in english, anyway, this cover has really moved me, and ur voice fits perfectly, nice job! :)

  • i love this version!

1994g0: your world must be very small

  • a beautiful version Kayenne! I love it

  • fuck the haters you put your own spin on this song and it sounds great KEEP ON ROCKIN IN THE FREE WORLD WOMAN

  • fuck the haters you put your own spin on this song and it sounds great KEEP ON ROCKIN IN THE FREE WORLD WOMAN

  • @1994g0 "I knew Townes-I talked to him occasionally" What did he say "Hello, who are you?" You sound like an idiot.

  • @1994g0 HTF do you know?

  • @1994g0 : i still don´t see the coherence in what your are trying to explain...

men not being keen on or supportive of feminism is a phnomena that is omnipresent..that´s how patriachy works and why it takes such an incredibly long time to overcome it... so yes, maybe you are right with your assumptions about Townes..sadly, nothing that surprises me...

but the important question is: how do WE behave to this NOW?

  • ...does the personality cult goes as far as simply adopting believes and wordviews or do we choose to apply our own brains and personalities? see, i asked you about your experiences/reasons for your statement but all you answered was about him..

i don´t need you to like my version, believe me, but the reasons you give are kinda part of a bigger problem (i guess that´s why i´m still writing about this):

  • your attitude in your first comment, especially shown in the "have this girl sing..." is such a great example of the high-handedness men are still wearing, now in 2010... however i still wish that you would think about YOUR reasons; your socialization in an obviously patriachal society.. AND the possibilities of a critical reflection on all of this. i know it´s hard to break with very old believes but the beautiful thing is: it´s always possible. cheers and good luck.

  • @kayenne1 I hope you get over your insecurities. That was a great version. Townes would be proud. The best part of life is worry consumes us. In the end worry is the least of our problems. All the best and once again nice job....

  • To call Townes a social critic is saying too much.Townes was an intuitive genius with deep substance abuse problems. He was more like Hank the 1st than Poe.Poe`s mind was more analytic than Townes`-especially after the shock treatments eroded Townes` memory.

But he didn`t like feminism. And his lyrics are those of a drifting backroads cowboy.

So don`t decesrate his memory with your whining Boston coffee shop style.Try Peter, Paul and Mary if you don`t like Janis Ian.But leave T.V.Z. alone.

  • @1994g0: that´s hillarious...but also a bit sad...you know, music and art in general cannot be put in boxes like that...

why is gender so important for you and how does this restrict your own life/experience?

anyway, still thanks for your feedback, sometimes it can be helpful to have a reality check...

a long way to go, i guess...

  • @kayenne1 don't let this touch you(in any way). ignorance will exist as long as humans exist. the trich is not to get bittered by it. hope you succeed. x

  • @Nerudah thanks for writing that...fortunatelly i feel far away from getting bitter...it´s just that i want people to start thinking..

well, i am glad for the ones who do..:)

  • @1994g0 Oh, I see now... YOU"RE AN IDIOT!

  • @1994g0 you obviously have not heard the be good tanyas version....

  • this is really well done. ;)

  • ..nice one..thank you :)

  • The Be Good's led me to Towns which led me to you, Destiny...? Loved it!!

  • I loved that kind of sadness in your voice. Seems to be dedicated to someone.

I'm going to rip this video and take the audio in an MP3, to transfer it to my iTouch... Gonna listen it everyday... Nice guitar job, nice voice. Loved it.

Regards from Mexico City and God Bless Van Zandt

  • meh...I don't care for it.

  • @farbeyonddriven04

I have to agree,,, while she sings nicely.. she isn't capturing what townes could. She couldnt make an old man cry with this. You know she hasn't felt the pain that alcohol brings some people.. Just my opinion...I've always been open to being proved otherwise ;)

I love the lyrics so I've been looking to buy and download a good version. The BGTs is OK but yours is awesome I wish I could buy it on Itunes!!! You should check out some cowboy junkies stuff I think you'd like them. Your guitar playing is brilliant.

  • Amazing!!

  • A great cover of Townes Van Zandt, I could feel it when I closed my eyes. I wonder what else Mr. Van Zandt would of gave to us all if he had lived a little longer?

  • Nice, interesting version. Like your originals too!

  • I think I'm in love.

  • Superb cover. I love this.

  • Absolutely brilliant, really enjoyed your spin on that; quite spacey, Mazzy Starr vocal drift?

Anyway, you recommend I should check out Ani DiFranco? Which album to start with? Cheers
