  • well i'm not gonna dispute anyones word about Bucks guitar pickin. But I only know what i've seen and heard Don Rich do, he made the Telecaster what it is today. I would think that good country music singers like Vince Gill and Brad Paisley, that are execellent guitar players also would want to show their playing talent like they do. I am fan of Buck Owens and the Buckaroos music. With that being said Don was Bucks sound. No one's picking has done more for country music than Don Rich.

  • Wow, this makes me wonder how many wonderful guitar shenanigans I've mistakenly credited Don Rich for over the last 40 years of listening and loving Buck's music!

  • Great sound!

  • Bucks plays a mean Telecaster!

  • Dig the steel guitarist! He's got the lap steel around his neck & the pedal steel in front of him! LOL!

  • That's Terry Christopherson. It's actually a guitar around his neck. It's one of those guitars that you tune on the body.

  • I actually love Buck's original jangly guitar on his pre Rock N rock influenced material. Listen to the guitar break on "You gotta have a license." His picking methods were great (it actually sounds like 2 guitars playing at once).

  • *his guitar work on Tommy Collin's "You gotta have a license."

  • I heard a story from a buddy of mine this weekend. He said that Buck was a session guitar player years ago and that he actually did all the lead guitar work on his albums and that it wasn't Don Rich. That Don only played the lead rides live but in the studio it was all Buck. I didn't even know Buck was a lead player until he said this to me and after watching this video, it seems his story could be true. Anyone know?

  • Turns out that Buck played ALL of the instruments on most of his recordings.

  • That's pretty cool. All these years I listened to his music and had no idea. That just elevated him even more in my all time singers list. Very cool.

  • I have read that Buck trained Don , and as Don took over lead Buck turned more to running the whole band ...

  • Correct...Buck was a lead guitarist and Don was a fiddlle/violin player when they met. Don wanted to play guitar more that fiddle. Buck taught him his style and the rest is history! Buck was able to front the band and feature Don on guitar and fiddle, which Buck had no problem doing. Buck and Don both playing lead at the same time was Awesome...I saw them together live play Buckaroo, one played higher than the other....purest sound you have ever heard!

  • I wish I would have gone to see him.. Certainly a Bakersfield ledgend

  • That is some picking, thanks for sending this to me, and thanks to idgoback for a great post. One of the best.

  • I think a lot of country folk wish they would have! He was a ledgend in the full world of country music and will be missed forsure. His honesty to the the Nashville elite was something I truly admired.

Thank you idgoback for your post and thank you Diana for sharing it with me!!

    Floud

  • I seen him at his club in bakersfied around this time and it was great.

If you are in the area you should stop in you won't be sorry.

  • This would be a great post if the opening garbage with the lightning and the announcer was cut out.....

  • I'd Go Back .... IdGoBack (dot) com

  • Buck is terrific.

    Tx.

  • Awesome! I'm not a country music fan but Buck was one exception to that rule!

  • Buck was always the King Daddy when he played lead!!!

  • I saw Buck and Don live at Mockingbird Park near Indy in 69. Awesome show and both played silver telecasters. First time I realized he could pick almost as good as Don.

  • Hey, this is very cool. Most know that Buck and the Buckaroosplayed San Francisco's venues during the height of the hippie era. I saw them a coupleof times at the Filmore West. They rocked.

What a lot of people forget is that for a

national country act to play that crowd at

that time required a character quality that

is very rare at any time, much less the Haight

in its prime. But, still, there they were.

It's only recently I realized what a lead

man Buck was. D Rich was such a presence.

  • By any chance, is that the Tele that Buck Owens gave to Brad Paisley? It sure looks like it!

This song's awesome...now I have another great country artist--Buck Owens--to buy CDs by.

  • yep it is

  • Buck was a great one, no doubt.

  • man--Buck is HOT! Great to hear him play lead!

  • Yeah he rips on that country pikin.

  • Buck Owens was and is in a League of his own!

  • still the best innovator to ever hit country music.

  • Most people have No idea what Buck did for music!

  • what a talent the world is missing today without buck.

  • what a legend!!!!
