I'm not a right winger, but I can answer the question. The separation you site is from Jefferson and was intended to encourage the prevention a national religion from being adopted as it was in England with the Anglican Church, or Church of England. The application of that principle has arguably exceeded Jefferson's intent and created a "brooding and pervasive hostility to religion" as predicted by two justices in the 1963 Abington case. The justices were, unfortunately correct.

@DUPERMAN99 - thats because the only one to mention it was Jefferson and he wanted them to be separate to avoid the whole Roman Catholic fiasco that they had escaped from in europe. that being said, separation of church and state is not mentioned anywhere in the declaration of independence or the bill of rights or the constitution. it says that congress shall pass no law establishing religion it did not say that government could not endorse religion.

It is the common way of referring to the fruition of this idea in the US Constitution. It's a bit long to post here, but there is a good WIKI if you search "separation church state".
