@1stclassrecordings its awesome what his right foot can do. someone tried explaning it to me but it made no sense. he thought tony was using two pedals lol. thanks anyways dude. i want the pattern but hearing the hat and the kick at the same time in that speed is insane. tony is my favorite drummer.
the usual style of fills, like the fast triplets, the change of the rhythm, the grooves, etc. like most of the drummers you see will shed to shouting music. shouting music, church.

writing a good song doesnt have shit to do with musicianship..im with fresh...u might no think not a competition but if u ask somebody to battle...especially in philly u either win or lose...tony won..its sooooooo obvious..and for anybody that hasnt watched drummers battles this has nothing to do with a hippie as groove its who got the illest chops wins...
You're probably right, but I think Royster lost the groove of the music though. He went too hardcore for this mellow jam, and for that I think Pridgen takes this one, I mean if the groove and flow of the melody was more up beat then I think Royster definately would have.
Whoever said music was a fucking competition? Its dumbasses like you who even try comparing. Its like saying jimi hendrix sucks compared to eddie van halen coz he didnt play as many notes. STUPID. Well people have taken shed out of its context. It's suppose be a SHED meaning sharing with others, showing and teaching and learning! Now it's all about a BATTLE! As for POCKET (that means nothing in a shed lol) These days it doesnt mean much in a church service or recording! Im all for pocket, (Calvin "COON" Napper, Chris Johnson [from LA], Michael Neuble (i bet you like who is that? LOL do your homework)Jeff Davis, JHaynes, it's too many to name!! But those guys could play for me any day!!!
That said, he demonstrated ZERO pocket. I know its a shed, but you can still groove every now and then instead of just throwing up over the whole groove for 8 minutes ...
These brothers are excellent drummers! They would definitely have no problem locking it in the pocket!I would love to jam with them!Peace Out and God Bless All!!!
tony show off trying to play hard, but pridgen instead play clean he didnt show off Royster use double pedal (inmature) royster thinks that playing fast is better he just suck man! Pridgen do perfect timings, royster just show off but eventually PRIdGEN WON
i've bout had it with this bullshit sayin tony only uses double pedal and he has no grove and all that other bull people been sayin, first of all he probably has one of the fastest single foot pedal action i ever seen and if were to watch his dvd or him playin with jay-z would see his pocket and timing is impacable. both thomas and tony mean on the drums though.
man yall quit being political and be real. man tony ripped thomas! i respect the both but thomas was obviously winded and royster was going full speed ahead with all licks into all of all allness!

Yoooooooooo....... the dude with the yellow striped shirt with the dreads is unreal!!! Thanx man I put that video in my favorites... Any real drummers who care will watch the video this man just told us all about!
i feel like tony never goes through with his solos/fills. like he ends early. and then waits for the one. Thomas on the other hand fills and solos and comes back on whatever beat he feels like and makes it sound great... just my opinion...
Their is a very major factor that you must take into account...Pridgen's drum parts stem from live situations where he has performed with OTHERS so he takes into account the tone more so than actual "showing off"...Tony on the other hand does shoes by himself and probably has most of his drums rhythms stem from that solo atmosphere
I love both drummers, but in my opinion, even though tony has more bombast than thomas, I found his solo ideas much more musically sound compared to tony's. still, mad props to both for being so damn good.
david alan rogers nowbody cares if u can say what he did by technique n wtv b trust it was live your just tryna show that you know terms to make evryone think ur a greezy drummer
Uhm... Thomas INCLUDED flam-taps into a Moeller triplet progression he was slamming out with his right hand. Watch the clip again.
Tony is just slamming away with his hands and feet. Big deal? Thomas is doing some insanely difficult time-drop outs (ON PURPOSE) while employing perfect sticking patterns and timing.
What the hell does Tony do that tops that? All he's got is some really fast hand-feet DBP chops. I don't even think Thomas uses a single-pedal.
I think you have to be real. Thomas is doing the samething over and over. And that not really bad but you can tell. Tony just has more licks than dude. Look at 4:01 dude had nothing else. Just look at yo boi's face at 5:46!
Thomas is like practicing in this clip. He knows he has nothing to prove cuz he's been killing cats in sheds since he was nine years old. Tony's playing like he has a chip on his shoulder like he's trying to prove something. Tony doesn't HAVE more chops, he's just displaying more chops in this clip in particular. Those who have seen Thomas really go for blood in a shed know what I'm talkin about.
To be honest...u dont know what dude is doing!!Unless you have a convo with dude.. u dont know why dude is playing like that. And how you know Tony just aint clowning around. And yes he does have more licks!!! What does Tony have to prove? Who you think makes more money????
If you've seen Thomas really play, like really go for it, you realize that he's been holding back for years now lol. I don't need a convo to help me see that. And how do I know Tony's not clowning around? Dude, look at his face!!!! He's trying to murder Thomas lol...Tony's always trying prove something, whether it be that he's the fastest, dopest, whatever. And Thomas is on tour with the MARS VOLTA!! You tell me who makes more money homie lol
Man if me and you are playing basketball And I win, and you say,"I was holding back" thats on you! And once I see you hoding back then Im gone really murda you. Stick to the facts of the clip. He got Murda. If he played His hardest,I think he did, he would get murda! Tony at 12 is killing this dude.
I know you seen Tony when he was 12! You think Thomas could do that at 12? So you think Mars Volta pays better than your own DVD? They both killed it but Tony won, if they where going at it!
LOL ok mane, whatever you say. Lets not forget thomas won guitar center drum at age 9, tony won when he was 11. But you have your opinion i have mine. i've seen video of thomas doin the stuff tony doin now when thomas was like 13 lol...I dont care about one clip, it's about what I know about the drummers as a whole. But whatever lol
I feel U! To me dude just can't get wit Tony. To me when I hear Thomas play Im just not that impressed. When I watch Tony it like no matter how long I practice I will NEVER be able to do that! I mean if you just youtube they names...EVERY clip Tony is going hard, even when he by himself!! Not Thomas cuz He wack on here!!LOL!! But to each his own!LOL!
To appreciate what Thomas is doing now you need to look for "Mars Volta Letterman HD" video here on youtube. You can really hear the drums clearly in that specific video rip.
yo did yall catch the fill thomas did at 1:47 to 1:50? Thats the most rudimental roll ive ever heard from gospelchops. Number one its in 5/4 time and it encompasses flams, rolls and difference of drums. I still think tony won, though!LOL (if it was a competition)
wow that about gave me a heart attack. thomas is my boy but i must say that tony got up in the thing. whew! i don't really get into the competition thing but good grief i can't say that one left the other. hmmmm maybe tony was louder, more aggressive and had the most "understandable" ideas but that is like saying a dude with a marshall stack outplayed a cat with a fender deluxe. great next level playing regardless from both! i can't wait to hear the mars volta record with thomas.
These are two of the best, man. I'd like some criticism on my videos. Don't worry I seriously don't suck, hah I'm just curious as to what people have to say about my playing.
Thats what its all about!! Yeah i mean u may have sum, nice chops but its not just about that!! Its about learning from one musician brother or sister to another! I play the drums as well and when my friends and i get together and shed thats what we do, we learn, and borrow, and whatever we borrow we put our own feel to it!!! Thats what its about!!!
ocbfdog, once again you're underestimating them. If Tony and Thomas play double pedal, it's because they want to go REALLY REALLY fast. One foot will never be as fast as two of them. Look at their pedigree, do you honestly believe Thomas and Tony can play fast with a single pedal...that's what I call being "naive". Did you not see Jeremy leave his seat to get a better look at royster...that says a lot. There would be no need to pay special attention to someone you can crush.......
Jeremy would do what??? He would definitely FIT IN just fine with those two (because he's a monster), but in NO WAY would he blaze them. Why do some of you guys said crazy stuff like that...don't short-change these two, especially royster.......
He would kill them with just his footwork. Everything Jeremy does is with a single pedal. I don't know where you from, but down here in the South, we don't do that double-bass bullcrap.
Homie, double bass is just for speed riffs, there are things you'll never be able to do on a single that you can on a double. Tony Royster ain't no joke looks like someone hit fast forward, it's inhumane/insane.
For all of you that haven't noticed. When you make it to this level; if you make it to this level, you will realize that it's not about who can "blaze" who, it's just about the music. They are probably learning from each other, one GOAT to the next!
that's really true, man. At this level it's a matter of personal preference. If the two of them were auditioning for the same gig, it would come down to personality and other things that aren't related to musicianship.
Yea, They all agree that theyve all accomplished something.
roomtemp is right about the audtioning thing, chances are it would be a tough pick between any two of these, and its probably gonna come down to one of them having an off day, or maybe not feelin the tunes.
it mite be convenient but putting splashes upside down breaks them really quick, but if your pro like Pridgen that doesn't matter cuz he probably gets em free
these cats represent the new school to the fullest that explosive-abstract- and extremely creative style is what drives our generation of percussionist* (Buddy Rich)
I wish I could have heard Aaron get in on this one that would have been an atomic bomb
why ppl must thing this a challenge it is not its just a shed fellas seeing who's better been played out since 1999 2000 fellas two well rounded drummers of different styles thats what u also have to look at
Does musicianship ring a bell? Why is it during a shed someone always assumes that the drummers or whoever are playing against each other? I believe that they're feeding off of what each other has to say. Some are in big words some are small. The whole point of sheds is chatting musically.
thomas look like he enjoy'n himself more...tony seemz more like he tryna smash em(look in his eyez u see)...note how after he turn he always glance at eric moore!!!i'm not down playin tony for his performance jus don't try 2 play thomas like he small compared 2 tony..dats all!!!!Both Rockin tho!!!
i can't get over the fill that pridgen did at 3:09 ...

Very very good point...
JBoogs37 4 years ago 3
I get it, it's all about the atmosphere in which they play.

Drummy17 4 years ago
DavidAlanRogers 4 years ago
I think you have to be real. Thomas is doing the samething over and over. And that not really bad but you can tell. Tony just has more licks than dude. Look at 4:01 dude had nothing else. Just look at yo boi's face at 5:46!
But I cant do that stuff so..
destrib 4 years ago
Thomas is like practicing in this clip. He knows he has nothing to prove cuz he's been killing cats in sheds since he was nine years old. Tony's playing like he has a chip on his shoulder like he's trying to prove something. Tony doesn't HAVE more chops, he's just displaying more chops in this clip in particular. Those who have seen Thomas really go for blood in a shed know what I'm talkin about.
JBoogs37 4 years ago
To be honest...u dont know what dude is doing!!Unless you have a convo with dude.. u dont know why dude is playing like that. And how you know Tony just aint clowning around. And yes he does have more licks!!! What does Tony have to prove? Who you think makes more money????
destrib 4 years ago
If you've seen Thomas really play, like really go for it, you realize that he's been holding back for years now lol. I don't need a convo to help me see that. And how do I know Tony's not clowning around? Dude, look at his face!!!! He's trying to murder Thomas lol...Tony's always trying prove something, whether it be that he's the fastest, dopest, whatever. And Thomas is on tour with the MARS VOLTA!! You tell me who makes more money homie lol
JBoogs37 4 years ago
Man if me and you are playing basketball And I win, and you say,"I was holding back" thats on you! And once I see you hoding back then Im gone really murda you. Stick to the facts of the clip. He got Murda. If he played His hardest,I think he did, he would get murda! Tony at 12 is killing this dude.
destrib 4 years ago
I know you seen Tony when he was 12! You think Thomas could do that at 12? So you think Mars Volta pays better than your own DVD? They both killed it but Tony won, if they where going at it!
destrib 4 years ago
LOL ok mane, whatever you say. Lets not forget thomas won guitar center drum at age 9, tony won when he was 11. But you have your opinion i have mine. i've seen video of thomas doin the stuff tony doin now when thomas was like 13 lol...I dont care about one clip, it's about what I know about the drummers as a whole. But whatever lol
JBoogs37 4 years ago
But to each his own!LOL!
destrib 4 years ago
To appreciate what Thomas is doing now you need to look for "Mars Volta Letterman HD" video here on youtube. You can really hear the drums clearly in that specific video rip.

wildwood010 4 years ago
yo did yall catch the fill thomas did at 1:47 to 1:50? Thats the most rudimental roll ive ever heard from gospelchops. Number one its in 5/4 time and it encompasses flams, rolls and difference of drums. I still think tony won, though!LOL (if it was a competition)
nicholassmll 4 years ago
wow that about gave me a heart attack. thomas is my boy but i must say that tony got up in the thing. whew! i don't really get into the competition thing but good grief i can't say that one left the other. hmmmm maybe tony was louder, more aggressive and had the most "understandable" ideas but that is like saying a dude with a marshall stack outplayed a cat with a fender deluxe. great next level playing regardless from both! i can't wait to hear the mars volta record with thomas.

I meant...CAN'T play fast......
pocket85 4 years ago
practice fast licks at half time and then up your metronome speed.
LLroomtempJ 4 years ago
ocbfdog, once again you're underestimating them. There would be no need to pay special attention to someone you can crush.......
pocket85 4 years ago
People lets really look at it Tony was not playing to his full potential lets look at that really...
sircroft1 4 years ago
Jeremy would do what??? He would definitely FIT IN just fine with those two (because he's a monster), but in NO WAY would he blaze them. Why do some of you guys said crazy stuff like that...don't short-change these two, especially royster.......
pocket85 4 years ago
Jeremy would have ran up in both of them, though.
ocbfdog 4 years ago
Anyone who saw the DVD knows Jeremy CANNOT hang with Thomas...I don't know about Tony but him blazin Thomas???? Lol yea ok
Shaizerss 4 years ago
He would kill them with just his footwork. Everything Jeremy does is with a single pedal. I don't know where you from, but down here in the South, we don't do that double-bass bullcrap.
ocbfdog 4 years ago
Homie, double bass is just for speed riffs, there are things you'll never be able to do on a single that you can on a double. Tony Royster ain't no joke looks like someone hit fast forward, it's inhumane/insane.
Krazie316 4 years ago
For all of you that haven't noticed. When you make it to this level; if you make it to this level, you will realize that it's not about who can "blaze" who, it's just about the music. They are probably learning from each other, one GOAT to the next!
emphyrean 4 years ago 3
that's really true, man. At this level it's a matter of personal preference. If the two of them were auditioning for the same gig, it would come down to personality and other things that aren't related to musicianship.
LLroomtempJ 4 years ago
Yea, They all agree that theyve all accomplished something.
roomtemp is right about the audtioning thing, chances are it would be a tough pick between any two of these, and its probably gonna come down to one of them having an off day, or maybe not feelin the tunes.
OneRiddum 4 years ago 3
it mite be convenient but putting splashes upside down breaks them really quick, but if your pro like Pridgen that doesn't matter cuz he probably gets em free

rreid4 4 years ago
Does musicianship ring a bell? Why is it during a shed someone always assumes that the drummers or whoever are playing against each other? I believe that they're feeding off of what each other has to say. Some are in big words some are small. The whole point of sheds is chatting musically.
