I watched the whole series and it always gets me in the end when I see that German boy crying on the Russian Front... The cruelty at its peak,his dreams of a normal life is over,the sounds of machine guns and falling shells will haunt him for the rest of his life... Cruelty among the very few living after the war.

He was a German living in Poland in 1939, some place called Ryll or Ryss. He was the oldest of 4 sons at 17 years old, when the Germans took Poland. Being German, he & his family were spared from the murder that took place in his village but he was handed a rifle & shipped out to either Yugoslavia or Czechoslavakia for the next few years.

I can imagine his fear would be similar to that of this young man!

I often thought the Wehrmacht was brave, especially at the end of the war. But like the SS, they also commited war crimes against innocent civilians. So they weren't always decent soldiers. But many war crimes have been commited also by other soldiers, like the Russian and Japanese.

Great that the series also tell you that.

And as he is now passed away, he can't defend himself in that regard, but I do know that he actually desserted ranks and somehow made his way to Morocco of all places! It's 'Closing theme' and you can find it on the cd Apocalypse - Second world war from Kenji Kawai. I couldn't find this song anywhere on the internet but eventually found it in the iTunes-store from the program iTunes. However, it's not free so you have to pay for it but I think it's worth it.
