  • Great song. I love the message.

  • you defintly don't hear butiful music like this anymore, the music you just want to listen too

  • This song is so great that you can't help but listen to it and wonder what have you done with your life. On that note I pray that I'll do something with mine, no matter how small I just hope I made or make a positive impact on someones life. On judgement day I want the HOLY TRINITY to be please, happy AND LET ME IN. May the Lord Bless you all. You may not love or like the Lord but one thing WE ALL KNOW is that HE LOVES us even when HE'S not happy or please with out behavior.

  • Black]i[Butterfly .. my life's theme song

  • Deniece Williams, Minnie Riperton, Stephanie Mills, Anita Baker. I hate to say it, but black women don't seem to have this same kind of talent and class anymore. WTF HAPPENED?

  • @Renitamac I'm gonna tell you what happened! There worth and talented has shifted from minds and the roles as the cradle of civilization to the size of their breast and the looseness of their vaginas. Never has there been any other time in history where women are so proud of sowing seeds with disenfranchised, illiterate, broken men. A woman's worth can be best measured by her offspring and her ability to be perceived as a virtuous woman.

  • @2710Pocahontas u r 100% correct

  • @Renitamac whore-ism happened lol!

  • @Renitamac Black women do have this same type of talent and class. They just aren't being signed because the public is too busy buying garbage. When the demand of foolishness goes down, class will come back to the industry.

  • remove the hood mentality and depend on your essence knowledge is to the key break the cycle love your lady and your family more than money everthing will fall in place later i promise

  • Song reveals how a peoples has come along in the struggle for freedom and respect.

  • she,is,so,good

  • This is my life story written by someone I never met. I know that this song was ordained for me to hear it put my life before me knowing that I accomplish what God chose me to do. Black butterfly is me knowing that one day I will fly away knowing that I made it through to the other side to receive from God what he promised me if I continue to be a great witness for him. earthquake

  • This remind me of what African Americans endured! I can just imagine what my ancestors were thinking while they were being shipped everywhere! This song just remind me of them for some reason! Idk why.....

  • @LexilovesGod That's because that's what the song is about, reading the comments it did seem to go over alot of people's heads

  • @cmtgforever I agree!

  • @LexilovesGod - As free people we couldn't possibly know what any slave was thinking as they were shipped away from their native homeland. Butterflys are free.

  • @LexilovesGod Just think abt everything our ancestors been through. Being slaves , getting hung and killed , working hard to make our lives better , & it happened to them for over hundreds of years. They've been through more hell than we ever have and will. This song really reminds me of them. Be thankful for the elderly ppl especially yours

  • @Reniika94 YES AND THIS JUST TAKES YOU ON A JOURNEY LIKE SHE IS TELLING THEIR STORY WITH EACH WORD SHE SUNG!

  • @Reniika94 AND I DO AND ALWAYS WILL HAVE RESPECT FOR MY ELDERS BECAUSE THEY PAVED A WAY FOR ME TO ENJOY THE THINGS THAT WE HAVE NOW THAT THEY DID NOT HAVE BACK THEN

  • @LexilovesGod Wow!! how tru.

  • @LexilovesGod I was just reading the lyrics and thought the same thing..WOW!!

  • @LexilovesGod Wow! You are a visionary. I never would have made the connection to African until I read your comment. Filmmaker, politician? Keep thinking my friend. Your thoughts can change lives:)

  • @bleuaja Aww! Thank you so much and yes I am thinking about being a filmaker or maybe a singer! I just listen to the story she sung and it just automatically made me think of my ancestors and all the mess they had to deal with and them being on a boat being shipped here and there. This song just makes you remember their story and legacy and that we are to never forget the walkway that they paved that we may be able to walk through it free of prejudice and racism.

  • @bleuaja Sorry for writing a paragraph lol

  • This is a very powerful song and it is good for a Black Child to hear this.....especially when they are going through that awkward stage. I like the message in this song....it ministers to me.

They just don't make music like this anymore, and no singers like the amazing Niecy!

  • the "black butterly" is mother god. her children are the biblical hebrews.

  • This song is sooo deep!

  • This song is about blacks in America, we were bought over here as slaves, villains, and outcasts but the "Black Butterfly" is now free and we will be a strong, vituous people again someday! Count on it!!!

  • They are 17 people who don't understand this song. it's a shame U don't get the message... and this song sounds good too.

  • Who wrote this song? PERFECTION!

  • this song is the best by her this lady is the best this is bout Martin Luther King Jr i will always love

  • this song was about martin Luther King. the Black butterfly the dream still lives and will live on as long as there is someone to remember.

  • Niecy is the best no one can touch her in this day , not even come close , all you hip hoppers, rappers and boodycall noise makers put on your headphones and listen to some real music

  • @wreepeet Why do you think WE are listening to her!?? You old folks are more close minded than us "hip-hoppers".

  • @Dilesmusic Now you see there lyes the root of of the problems the young people now a days cannot take costructive criticism or just a simple ragg , just like now you probably think i dissed you and in return since you can't see me you referenced to old folks as a way of dissing me back , by the way in my case its Mr old folks in case you care to try to salvage just a little respect

  • @Dilesmusic:

It is not that the older folk are close-minded. Rather, the younger folk seem to lack depth. We see it in that which the younger folk claim to be music, as just one example in society. On average, save a few truly talented artists out there, what most younger folk claim as musical artistry, would not even qualify for airing on the old Solid Gold talent show.

The issue is depth and breadth of quality, where the younger set seems to miss this salient point.

  • @TigerGrumman Hey, we youth don't lack what you think. Give some of us some credit... :P

  • Old school will never be beat because those songs in the past were song with PASSION!!! and Passion is untouchable 4ever.

  • People should be ashamed of themselves,; this is one of the most inspirational songs I've ever heard. Where are the views!!! are people this ignorant???

  • This song was unofficially dedictated to Muhammad Ali.

  • very very good song.

  • u shouldbe ashamed to admit you dislike this. Some things are better left a secret

  • 15 ppl still aint came out da cocoon lmao

  • Oh my my my, this is dedicated to my children:)

  • inner peaceful music of that era and great sounds my theme song

  • listening to niecy singing this song and alot of the great music from the '80's,makes me long for the music and artist from that era, because the mess that's coming out today is pure garbage and i wouldn't spend a penny buying it. thankful for the artist and music from the '70's and '80's. this song is pure classic with feeling and meaning.

  • This song has always inspired me to believe in humanity, even when I have lost faith, I turn to this song to renew my faith in humanity as I have done today..Do not be fooled by the ugliness outside, there is still beauty around us in this crazy world, we just need to open our hearts and minds to see the true value and beauty of this thing called LIFE.

  • heard this song in HS...Love it. Had a dance to it an everthing :-)

  • From Dr. Martin Luther King to President Barack Obama! Look how far we have come and much further we have to travel.

  • im 11 and im a huge fan of old music and this is definitely one of my favorite old music. unsung sent me here :))

  • "Black Butterfly" is one of the most breathtakingly BEAUTIFUL songs ever written by anyone, anytime, anywhere.......period! When an artist as tremendously "gifted" as Deniece Williams performs a song of this magnitude, it somehow raises the "greatness" level another notch higher. My personal feeling is this: Deneice Williams IS a "Black Butterfly".......a creature of tremendous attractiveness & versatility. I love her passionately.

  • ok so i was born in 94 but i love this song to death !!

  • She hits notes i could NEVER hit!!

  • Thank you Ms.Williams for putting out such a song. Singing the message about the struggles and triumphs of black people while simultaneously embracing black pride ( BLACK_BUTTERFLY) as a people in such a soulful-soultry way touching our hearts through song. Truly a voice touch by GOD.

  • beautiful i feel what she is talking about love u Deneice Williams!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Amazing vocals!! I love this song!!!

  • "It was interesting because it turned out that I did not hear a word of the song. I’d thought she was saying “Black Bird Fly” yet when I finally knew the words I knew I got it right the first time. Its hard to explain but when the song ended, I woke up from my long slumber and knew that I was beautiful and fell in love with who I was... I sometimes wish I never stumbled across that song! It grabbed me by the scruff of my neck and has never let go" Don Kenobi "of gods and negroes"

  • I have goosebumps reading these comments. Thought the song touched me in this "crazy" way. It changed my life. I wrote a book because it 'opened' my eyes!

Read: Before I heard that song Black Butterfly, I had no identity. I heard rather than listened to it. It was playing over the radio on shortwave there was a lot of hissing and fading but the music was powerful. I held my breath through most of the song and when the song was over, I and all I’d been about was over too. I became a man!

  • I wish this song was never ending, its so comforting.

  • this song is about transformation and rebirth.

  • love this old skool song & i am 25 years old

Being blessed to have been on this Earth for over 54 years, I consider myself fortunate to have experienced Deniece's career from it's very inception..........and it's been an absolute joy! To the young folks of todays generation; Ask your parents about "Niecy". Chances are, they will clue you in on someone VERY SPECIAL.

  • @BlaqKoffee I always wished I was born just 10 years earlier ('63) so I could have enjoyed the Ojays, Sly, Evelyn Champagne etc while in HS when most ppl really learn to appreciate music. Instead I came along for 2LiveCrew and NWA ...lol.

  • @BlaqKoffee I can'nt agree more with you, i was born in '61 and i grew up with some great music also. this is why this music is still so meaningful and timeless today. real artist was at work putting their heart and soul into it. this is truly a classic

  • @MrNathan791 Your not joking.Niecy just stamped her name all over this song, its just a pure classic and the lyrics is just deep, even as a dude i get teary eyed hearing this because its just some deep poignant stuff that all can relate to even in this day and age when you see how our youth is and all thats happening around us.Its the ultimate classic that should not be touched by anyone.Beyonce and Rihanna should take notes from this woman.

  • The 13 people that voted thumbs down makes this song that much more powerful with that much more meaning1

  • @Otteto On point comment!

  • Great melody, powerful lyrics- masterful performance, Ms Williams!

  • Comment removed

  • This song has always touched me. A true masterpiece 

  • I listened to this as a kid, and I never knew it was about race. It could stand for anyone or thing that is different and has a hard time fitting in anywhere. I was an outcast, and I was white.

  • My entire class broke out in tears at graduation when this came on.

  • Thanks for posting this one! Outstanding!!! Muchos gracias!

  • Thanks to everyone who liked my comments!

  • can some body please put dat song love, peace, and unity on here by her it's of her i'm so pround album please i cant find it anywhere Deniece Williams

  • Whatever happened to D.W?

  • This song for me is in the top 5 greatest songs of ALL TIME

  • This "DIVA" pend a song that's for these rough times "A WAKE-UP CALL" I just wish that more people would listen to the "MUSES" that sing these very Positive, Heartfelt or Relevant and Insightful "MESSAGES" i.e., Marvin Gay "What's Going On" The Temptations "Ball of Confusion" Cher "Love and Understanding" Kenny Loggins "Conviction of the HEART" and Teena Maire "REVOLUTION" I think what's people are really longing for, that which is missing now days is "THE MESSAGE IN THE MUSIC" ~I am blkbufly

  • @2be1neurotic Here's something you may not know. These powerful and uplifting lyrics that so wonderfully illuminate the struggle and promise of our heritage were written by Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann; a married couple, both white. I am unsure of their ethnic background but somehow, they were able to feel and express it even though it is not their own. It tells me that in spite of the social and political walls we all put up, we truly do still have the ability to empathize with one another.

  • @emmettk What a wonderful and well expressed comment.

  • @2be1neurotic Unfouttanately in this day in age nobody doesnt want to hear any messages in any music but instead hear a bunch of superficial, materialistic and plastic party fluff thats not talking about anything signifigant or relatable to the common man whatsoever and this type of music sells and makes millions and millions of dollars and its often passed off as music,im like are you kidding me.The music industry sadly to say has reall dumbed down to a low.

  • @dcflava74 in some aspects you are right but there are popular songs out now that have a message even if everybody doesn't always get the message that's being portrayed. eminem Love The Way You Lie (domestic violence) lady gaga born this way (tolerance) katy perry firework (raising self esteem) just to name a few pop songs....u might not like the song itself but there are messages in them
