Nice to see the plane assembled. I served an LDS mission to Oregon and served in McMinnville, But while I was there the plane hadn't been assembled yet. Also, the original hanger for the spruce goose located in california was used as the set for Ra's pyramid spaceship in the Movie Stargate..Just FYI. :)
They have one of the same model engine sitting on the floor, and it is massive. But that plane is so big, when you stand directly under the engines, they look tiny enough to be an RC engine. I got to go into the museum before it opened to the public, before the plane was finished. Incredible machine. Great museum.
Dude, that is a pretty good sight. I'm doing a report on the H1-Hercules, and I can't believe it's still in good condition for a plane that cost over 40 million dollars and only flew once
where is this plane kept? still looks good after all these years , such a shame it was never used probs what caused howard to go over the edge poor man...
If we still had "Maverick" visionaries with as much testiucular strength as money like Mr. Hughs, this country would not be in the "fix" we are in today. Too many taxes, too many liberal politicians, too little patriotism and too much attention to being politically correct has led to the wimpification of America.
the point wasnt to carry more tanks than the ships, it was to avoid gettin blown up by german u-boats in the water. nobody ever claimed it could carry more than the ships.
This plane could have carried ONLY one Sherman tank at a time across the Ocean. A Liberty ship could carry between 40 and 50, plus TONS other supplies. At it's peak production in 1943, they were completing THREE Liberty ships EACH DAY. I bet H.H. even knew his plane would never be a factor in the war, he just wanted it built because it would be the largest plane ever. Nevertheless, I still admire the man.
They built the plane as a transporter because of all the U boats sinking ships, they wanted something that could avoid those. The reason it took forever for this thing to be built versus the liberty ships was a) this was an experimental aircraft, so MUCH less money was put into it, b) an incredible amount of factories were building the liberty ships versus the one factory building the Hercules.
I just saw this plane for the 2nd time a couple days ago. It's huge.
The US government spent $18,000,000 of its money for this aircraft during WW2. They wanted to use this plane to transport troops to Europe by air to avoid losses to German U-Boats. However, this plane wasn't completed until after the war ended.
ummm dude 0 drag is impossible unless u are in a vacuum, the sr71 will land with its wingtips glowing from the friction created by the air going over them. so unless it flies in space...
it was moved from the terminal island hanger where it was since 1947. and floated out to the channel
the hanger flooded once and the propeller's were damaged on the cieling.
it was moved to the channel painted this off white protective color and then moved to a point next to the Queen Mary for tourists to look at in a geodesic dome.
It did ok there for a few yrs.
but then had to be moved again.
It was taken apart and the part's shrink wrapped against the weather.
Hey i like the video clip,,but i would also like to add that Howard Hughes was never bancrupt just like modoc1111 says, ive followed howard hughes for many years and know alot about the man and own some very special collectors items and very rare books, the only time he was looking to scrape more money together was at the time of making the film hells angels and even then nowhere near bancrupt,,good clipping all the same!!
And they say the Antonov 225 is the largest plane in the world. WRONG!

Just for display, i had be to dissasembled from it's original location in a hanger in california (i think) and then reassembled there at the museum
trass97 3 years ago
thanks trass97, does he have any kids? i don't think so ...tsk,tsk,tsk!

@trass97
yes you are right.
i saw it in 83 going over the terminal island bridge in Long Beach,
the wing's were under giant tent's.
and as we were going under the bridge?
I saw it in the yard on the lower side of the bridge on the east side.
I also saw it in a news picture in the unioin tribune in san diego yrs ago with the picture of the top of the wing's in the middle of the fusalage.
would never fly again, too risky and too valuable as an aviation museum piece.
