@oneal36 JD is charcoal mellowed too. Bourbon and whiskey is a vague distinction. All bourbon is whiskey but not all whiskey is bourbon. There are minor aging & ingredient rules which are required to make a bourbon and most bourbons are made in Kentucky. While results & tastes vary the distinction is half philosophical & half territorial.
Scotch whisky(note spelling) must be distilled in Scotland and aged in Scotland in oak casks for at least 3 years. Dont know about this charcoal "ageing" of bourbon, isnt it charcoal filtering that it has to go through? Although there are no single American malts, there are some fine small batch bourbons out there....try Bookers Bourbon if you can find it, but go easy coz it packs a punch. I am also Scottish but I know a damned sight more about whisky and I still enjoy it.
Bourbon is a subset of whiskey. All bourbon is whiskey. Not all whiskey (usually spelled whisky outside the US) is bourbon. To be bourbon two things must be true: 1) it must be charcoal aged 2) it must be distilled in the state of Kentucky. Jack Daniels is made in Tennessee, so although it is a whiskey it is not, and cannot be, a bourbon.
@Aeonian199 Ramblin' Jack claims to have never smoked much. He blames his emphysema on having performed in many smoke-filled clubs over the years. All of his shows are non-smoking now. I find this song pretty interesting considering...
@theoriginaljeffro good to know, I watched a documentary on him before I had looked this video up, about his daughter tracking him down and interviewing him and his friends, some of his friends said he could be a little mentally imbalanced at times, heh. so not sure why.. perhaps only the whiskey & beer.
@Aeonian199 Yeah, that documentary was my introduction to Ramblin' Jack. He has got to be one of the most friendly people I have ever met. He has some fantastic (true) stories from all of his years of rambling about.
@Aeonian199 Jack Daniels is not a whiskey, its a bourbon.Great song though I like it.I have no idea why it says whiskey on the bottle. Its not whiskey at all,its made a different way.And that is why it tastes nothing like whiskey.I know about these things,as I am Scottish.I have still been known,to hammer JD though.Been off it a while now though.
@Aeonian199 The mash and the water, ours is better making it purer. Its why the two things taste different. Its why you do not get single malt bourben,as its blended.Like the cheapest of whiskey we have here. But even that is still whiskey, even if the mash is not as good.
@legandrydirk "Jack Daniel's is not a bourbon - it's a Tennessee Whiskey" That is a quote from the Jack website. Do they not have google in Scotland? It has something to do with the charcoal. Apparently being Scottish isn't enough to ensure that you know everything about whiskies. Thanks for sharing though champ!
@legandrydirk So it follows that Scotch, Canadian, or Irish are not whiskey? Jack Daniels and other whiskeys distilled in the Kentucky/Tennessee areas are called bourbons to identify the area of manufacture. If you want to be that strict about it, originally whiskey was distilled from rye or barley, so I suppose there are very few true whiskeys available.
shame on you all to slamb Jack if you look into his history you wouldn't make the cracks ! Look an see who he's toured, recorded an breathed air and shared phylosophies with HE IS A LIVING LEGEND AND AN INSPIRATION TO ALL! ! !

Jack Daniels is a Tennessee Whiskey.. It is filtered through charcoal, versus Bourbon, which is aged in casks that have been burned inside..

Actually, in the hills even today people cure their tobacco in whiskey, and it is called smokin whiskey, sir.
