  • an added bonus to pull string is that it turns any $200 cell phone into a yo-yo

  • if the sound-charging option is chosen, not one dragon ball z character will ever need to charge their cell phone, and goku can charge everyone's phone at once

  • ok, just saw this video..and have to ask...what about all of those swiss movement watches that wind themselves. isnt there a way to have that be a source of power to at least make a difference?

  • @cloud3224 yes actually, it is, the shake-charge technology is already in use in flashlights, all you do is shake it and it charges

  • I hope its sooner then 10 years! ... awesome video, thanks for sharing.

  • lurve it, keep on posting :)

  • Gig 'Em :)

  • What about heat? Like the heat from your body or ambient heat?

  • @Chipsonfire not enough to boil water, and having a steam turbine strapped to your droid would be a little cumbersome, good thinking though

  • I don't use a cell phone....and no, I'm not old...I'm a teenager...I have a cell phone...I just don't use it

  • they already did this. Check this out: tecnyo.com/duracell-mygrid-carga-de-modo-inalmbrico-los-mviles-de-la-familia/

sorry it is in spanish. But you can see in the picture that you just lay your phone on it, in fact, as many phones as you like, and they charge automatically

  • i'm all for renewable energy, but not at the cost of billions of dollars of government handouts. And not because of the false notion that the world will end if we don't switch to renewable energy. The fact is that global climate change is not man affected. That's not to say it doesn't happen, just that mankind does not have the power to speed up or slow down the process. Large volcanic eruptions like Mt. St. Helens put out more "CFCs" than the entire human race throught all of history.

  • The Navy already uses sound powered phones aboard ships.. they are like large walkie talkie backpacks... but they are purely sound powered, which is sweet. :)

  • "research to prove that people are thinking about it"...ha typical green left. I have research to support my cooky idea, look a professor is thinking about it. I'm curious what the carbon footprint of each of your rambling videos is. I think you've exceeded your allowable limit, but have no fear, I have a permit I can sell you for $1,000.

  • My wife and I have given them up in 2005 and have been fine without cell phones. We've got the old fashioned wall unit and an answering machine. Cell phones serve no purpose. None.

  • @tubecraft7 Saying cell phones serve no purpose is just a bit ridiculous.

Sure, if you spend all of your time at home then you could do without one, but what if you don't?

There's also the issue of integration. Modern cell phones contain so many functions that used to be done by separate devices. Mp3 player, alarm clock, calendar, email, web browser, games console the list goes on. I'm writing this from my phone now.

Cell phones are the epitome of usefulness.

  • Innovation is a beautiful thing.

  • I don't know who this guy is but he's pretty badass.

  • @Zeratul723 Hank Green. He's one of the vlogbrothers

  • I love the idea of solar powered phones and I also think Kenetic power would be cool too. Have you done any exstensive research on wind power? no. . .Not for phones but for homes eg; verticle vortex turbines??

  • what about kinetic? the one thing we do with our cells is walk around with it

  • omg just what we need another eco prick

  • @SylarXII He's not an eco-prick! Hank Green is quite literally made of awesome where as you are simply made of tissue and organs. Good day, sir

  • @Katindabox lol u mad?

  • Wanna do far more damage for the coal industry and preserve employment in wooded zones like West Virginia? Good! Now take the advice of my ALT 360 college teacher . . . . . add on WOOD FIRED additions at existing coal-fired power plants. In 'eco-friendly' mode, this means you'll be using only waste wood and industrial hemp biomass fuel. Just one worry here folks . . . . the FEDS won't yet allow this. Why? I dunno. However, a quick look at the cover of the February 1938 " Popular Mechanics ". e

  • that brand new phone also cost a shitload of iEnergy to jackass

  • This was pretty interesting. I couldn't stop watching.

  • @GuitarGoddess01

    Agreed. He knows what's up.

  • the battery cover should be a high efficency solar panel that would at least make the battery last a lot longer

  • my watch doesn't work forever, I have to refresh batteries every 2 years! ;-) but i get the idea...it does feel like forever ^_^

  • Wouldn't converting the technology in pedometres and building that into phones provide power somehow ... seems to work in my head

  • I have a solio and love it!!! I stick it in my car window to charge and then use that charge to charge my cell phone!!!

  • That's possible to power phones by voice? THAT IS THE COOLEST THING EVER. I am so amazed by this. Wow.

  • Battery companies would hate this... dead batteries = business. My favourite part of this video was "raaaaaaagh"

  • How about movement. While the phone is in your pocket. walking could be used by an inertia generator.

  • Yes, that's what we need. Less research, and more nuclear waste. Let the future take care of it - after all, we will be long dead, and the effects of nuclear waste that will never fully biodegrade, no matter how safely it is deposited, can be our children's problem.

  • Its people like you that really prevent real progress. You fear that which you don't understand. We can come up with a way to remove nuclear waste safely and efficiently, but practically no research has been done on this, because the powers that be and scared children like you don't get it. Nuclear energy is more efficient, we can produce it without pollution. And we can find a way to dispose of it with no ill effects. But you scream "NO, we don't want it, we want coal and gas!!!"

  • john galt would know what to do

  • i only made it half way through that book =(

  • If the magnetics of the kinetic technology could be harnessed without the magnetism disrupting the phone's electronics that sounds like an awesome idea. Awesome video Hank! Ecogeek is an amazing site!

  • Most peoples phones live half their life in someones pocket, so why not harness kinetic energy... Just like my Pulsar watch?

  • that is what I was just thinking, people move their wrists enough to generate enough electricity to keep a watch working, although I am not sure about phones, maybe you could start shaking it about, but it may look a bit silly if you do that, and if it is in your pocket, it may not generate as much kinetic energy as your watch, because people swing their arms, and the watch is at the end of the arm, where you get the most energy, the phone is at the top of the leg, where you get the least energy

  • Excellent.

  • lol, trying to explain how physics works in 500 characters is not easy

  • Ha yes. I just learned today that when designing a charger circuit for NiMH batteries you have to control the current to each cell individually. Each cell charges at such a different rate that treating them like a NiCad or LeadAcid (series charge) can cause current spikes and battery damage.

  • awesome

  • i for one am not really in to being green dont get me wrong i think its a good thing im just not super serous about it like a few other people the way i see it is if you do go green no if the whole world did everything would run off wind and solor energy so every thing would be way cheaper thats how people should see it.

  • Have you ever written a sentence before?

  • one period!

  • You guys at ecogeek FREAK-N-ROCK!

    love ya man!

  • its inevitable that the world will run out of fuels...but we will just adapt..so oh well.

  • We adapted in the oil crisis, we adapted when the stock market crashed, we adapted when 9/11 happened.

I think we can survive without dirty, dirty coal and oil.

  • thank you, we Adapt

  • Humans usual produce heat and emit it from the skin, why dont they make a phone that can capture the heat from hands or from pants pockets?

  • Hank, I've been wondering. Which uses more water: a bath or a shower?

  • Depends on how long your Shower or how high you put the water in a bath tub. I use more water in a Shower.

  • bath

  • Depends on the capacity of the tub and the amount of time you are taking a shower.

  • 2:56 Favorited just for that!!! XD

  • I looove yoooooou!

  • omg! as soon as they have solar powered cell phones, I will be the happiest kid on the planet!!! I love that idea ^_^

  • /Someone/ doesn't understand grammar.

  • That is really really awesome.

  • Great video, thanks!!

  • ohhh a pull string on a cell phone me likie

  • i do not think it could work. i have a crank charger and it takes about 30 minutes for about 30 seconds of cell phone power. A better idea would be capacitors in clothing that collect trickle electricity and then could be directed into your phone a number of ways.

  • We've been using sound-powered telephones in the navy for years now. They aren't cell-phones but . . . you know . . . still . . .

  • thanks for opening my world to all of these great and interesting ways to use convert energy that i didnt even know were possible.

we need more people to see the videos

possibly by putting links on vlogbrothers vids to it, then hopefully people will back up these researchers and then if we're really lucky the technology could be made in maybe 2 years instead of 10.

    DFTBA

  • how about putting a twitter link on the side

  • Voice generating power is awesome.

    :)

  • I WANT A PULL STRING ON MY CELL PHONE! I dont even care if it charges it, I just want one to play with!

  • A&M!!!

    I was JUST there!!!

did you know they created the purple onion!!!

    LoL!

    Really, they did!!!

  • Very interesting.

Do you know which are the most "green" cellphones in the market today?

  • Hand-cranked cell-phone chargers (that also are emergency radios and flashlights) are currently available. I own one. This is just a bulky version of your string pull generator idea. They'll get smaller, and could be mounted in any phone.

I wonder if they could also take advantage of body heat. They could run some kind of Carnot cycle or stirling engine to generate electricity...

  • Why? What makes it dumb?

    Makes sense to me.

  • the nokia one was most def. one of your articles on ecogeek :) i used them for article reviews every week for my environment and ecology class. You're the reason i will be applying to college as an environmental science major in the fall of 2010

  • 2:52 just had me break out laughing. That was hilarious!

  • This was so interesting! Keep up the good work, Hank :)

  • he's a nerd

a nerdfighter to be more exact

  • you're the best Hank!

  • I have read articles about tiny "generators" that could be in the sole of your shoe... and when you walk around you can create enough energy to power your portable electronics. Or how about the Japanese guy who made the platform that produces energy just by having people walk on it. Google "piezoelectricity" for more info... Still needs a lot of work and research but... fascinating stuff!

  • I like the pull string idea. Not only could you run a generator, but you could also gyro-stabalize the phone so the photos and video produced by the user WON'T BE SO FREAKING BLURRY!

  • awesome

  • I just wanna say that it's likely that we already have the technology to make a cellphone that runs forever (or at least for a really REALLY long time, like a few months to a full year), but that will not happen because that means you'll have a phone that works forever and you won't want to update to the latest iRazor5000.

  • I love the ideas. I only have to charge my phone about twice a week but I still find it the worst part of my cell phone. I live in Arizona where it would be perfect to have solar powered phones since there are over 300 sunny days a year. I will be waiting in line when solar cell phones are released.

  • Holy crap that's amazing oO

  • don't forget those watches and flashlights that get their energy from motion... just think! if our phones could do that we'd be free and clear! i mean, I usually carry mine around in my pocket and so just the motion of me walking would charge it! someone needs to get on this shit...

  • This is a good idea because if you think about it we release an insane amount of energy when we move around. do you know how much energy a calorie is? and it would give people a reason to excercise.maybe?

  • This was amazing. Please please please keep it up!

  • You said never plug in your phone, Hank, and listed all of these great alternatives, but these have not been developed yet/even made main-stream. What do you suggest we do then in the mean-time?

  • I'm in the Navy and we've had sound powered telephones for a long time. (granted wires are necessary, but we've got 'em.)

  • Using the phone and don't buying state of the art new stuff every new year would save a lot more...

  • If you're using iPhone just to talk to people, then you're doing it wrong. It shouldn't even be called iPhone. It should be called Mac Micro or some such. There's no comparison to the energy efficient stuff.

  • Okay, I take offense to the coal comment, hank. My city runs on natural gas!

Okay, maybe it's not much better than coal, but at least natural gas burns cleaner than coal does...

  • Hey, the cellphone could be powered just by the white nose in a background then too, right?

  • What's wrong with coal? It gives people jobs and provides energy for all the things we need.

  • Ha ha ha. American.

We can get the same amount of energy AND provide even MORE jobs if we sought alternative and 'greener' energy. The rate that humans are burning coal has put huge quantities of CO2 in the atmosphere, although the Bush administration has done a really outstanding job of distorting the situation, and is a major player in our current man-made climate change crisis. Americans have been 'trained' to doubt this, but the UN, NASA, and all peer-reviewed academia agree. So coal=bad.

  • I suspect you are a troll, because I refuse to accept that anyone genuinely believes that.

    1) Plants take CO2 out of the atmosphere, but they can only photosynthesize at a certain rate, and currently that is less than the rate at which we pump out CO2.

    2) Through deforestation,we are not only emitting more CO2, but are reducing the amount of plants capable of photosynthesizing.

    3) If more animals become extinct, we damage the fragile food-webs and food chains which exist in our world.

  • ah a true technocentrist talking there. If you think its fine to pump out CO2 for the plants to eat up, take a look see how much rainforest is actually out there.. really not much. This is even aside from the assumed warming of the planet.

If we lose the ice (which would kill the polar bears you mention), we may well lose some of the worlds largest cities, New York, London, Tokyo.. which wouldn't be so good.

  • dude really?

  • To GinoftheWind-

Erm, I agree with a lot of the points you made in your comment, but I'm really offended about the "American" thing. Hank is American, and he isn't, as you put it, "trained" to doubt global climate change, nor am I. I'm sure there are people in your country who doubt climate change, just like there are people in America who are like Hank and caring for the environment. I know you weren't trying to offend anyone, but try not to make hurtful generalizations like that.

  • xD Well, if it helps I'm an American, too, & proud of it.

It was a generalization, b/c most countries have a general and (often) unique psychology, which can vary, but usually remains true. i.e. in general the Chinese are hard-working, while the Japanese, too, are hard working, but much more aggressive (as seen in California in T.Roosevelt's time). It's determined by national culture (i.e. Islam v. Judeo-Christian) and exposure (media). He fit the US generalization on the topic. I like irony

  • 4 years is pretty generous

    more like 4 months

  • omg! such fun ideas!!! x] the pulley and raowr. lol~ i get so giddy about technology and yet my knack's for literature. i wonder..

  • why dont they just integrate minature motion powered generators in the cellphones like the ones in rolex watches.the movement of your wrist spins a weight and the weight drives a system of gears that amplify the motion and thus spining a turbine at high speeds generating enough power to keep the watch running forever as long as you wear it. simple but effective..i guess they just dont produce enough power for cellphones or maybe they do and cellphone companies have contracts with power companies

  • Basically, phones are going to be amazing, and I will like it. A lot. Trufax.

  • i think they should be powered off the heat from our bodies :p

  • pretty cool hank. might wanna work on your lighting a bit though.

oh and they have pocket sized solar powered car chargers already. fyi.

  • cool

  • haha, i actually just bought a phone today.

way to make me feel guilty :)

  • i want one of those pull strings they look adorable. somebody invent them pwease.

  • What really would be cute would be to have a wind power cell phone. The turbines could pop out the top like old antennas did. I would want my turbine to look like a mini multi -olored pin-wheel. And you could change your blades out like accessories :)

  • You might be too young to remember the watches that wound themselves through the kinetic energy generated by moving your wrists. So it might be possible to capture the kinetic energy from just carrying it around or holding it while jogging.

Lots of awesome ideas. And you missed the most obvious of all: the hand crank like the OLPC. Even an iPhone could do it. Instead of thumb twiddling, try absent-minded iPhone cranking.

  • wow

    this pretty sweet

  • These ideas are amazing. Hopefully they will become a part of phones sooner rather than later =)

  • I want a solar powered cell phone!!! I love my LG enV, but the reception at my house sucks, so i am charging it every day, or every 2 days depending on how much i talk or text!! I wouldnt mind charging my phone every couple of weeks though! And they need to integrate this technology into laptops

  • I have a better idea, how about a nuclear powered cellphones!!!

  • That was really interesting, but I have a distinct advantage over those of you living in places powered by coal: I live in Manitoba, Canada where all of the electricity is produced by hydro dams. They are certainly not the smallest footprint alternative energy type, but they are certainly better than coal.

  • this was really interesting, hank! loved it! =]

  • i've seen watches that keep them selves charged just using some of the energy from the swinging arms that they are strapped to... why not make a phone that can capture energy from the shifting hips that they are clipped to... or the swinging pockets that they are stuffed in

  • CUrrently, scientists are working on making a wireless battery charger. They have been able to transmit the electricity wirelessly, but they still need to make that cost effective to the masses. In the next ten years, that might indeed become a reality.

  • I'm really glad you've decided to do this, I was thinking that I don't want my mind getting too lazy over the summer (:

  • hank u should start an ecogeek podcast! that would b made of awesome

  • Hah. Those voice-charged phones would be GREAT for people that just talk on and on, and people who have a business career.

  • I have a little portable solar panel (about cell-phone sized itself when folded) that I can plug my phone into. It doesn't charge fast, but it charges! I'm not entirely sure though whether more energy wasn't used in the production of that little solar panel than I save by using it....

  • Where did you get it?

  • Aren't they working on pacemakers that are powered by your motion (i.e. heartbeat, arm movements etc.)? If this is the case then surely you could use this power to somehow power electrical items and bring us one step closer to a glorious dystopian future of the androids.

  • I think this is your best video yet!!

  • I like the idea of a solar-powered phone, but the thing about the calculators is that you only need them on when they are out of your pocket. We need phones on in our pockets so that we can receive and answer calls... is there some sort of provision for that in the solar-powered design?

  • Cool!

  • Do you think the force of pressing keys on cell phones would generate power somehow? Its like the talking/vocal chords idea..but with texting.

  • Wow! Technology is cool!

  • all kinds of good ideas for phones of the future, hopefully they progress at a quick rate so we can see some of these ideas in the public sooner than later. :)

  • "Oh wait, my cell phone's running out of battery, just a second... AAAGGGGHHH!!!!!!"

    lol

  • awesome idea...the yoyo phone

    i love it!

  • Ohh, I Love EcoGeek...

  • You freaked me out a little there xD

I just got an iPhone two days ago....... It was like you kneeeew o________o

  • Great video Hank! :) I think a great thing would be like a wireless solar charger. Like you leave your charger in the sun and it will charge your phone wherever you are. Now that would be AMAZING. lol

  • RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA.

  • hehe, I would totally buy a cell phone with a little pull string to generate power.

  • INTRO!!!!!

  • this would be awesome

  • Gosh, I love Hank.

I also love that he uses his green screen for a green background lol.

  • that's how much awesome he's made out of :)

  • a mode where you pull the string and it plays one of your voice mail messages.

  • I only buy wind up flashlights.

They should sell wind up phone chargers

  • they do, and there are also ways you can build your own winding power sourcce for your cell phones... research it up man! :)

  • LOL YOYO PHONE

  • That's great! I already yell at my cell phone when it's low on power!

  • Hahaha!

  • I would definitely buy a solar powered phone

And not only because it's ecofriendly and everything but for some reason it seems so much more awesome

Like people will be talking about all the things they have on their phone and I'll be like,

oh yeah? Well my phone sucks in sunlight energy!

  • These are all wonderful ideas and I look forward to the point where we won't have to charge using a cord. I'm forever running out of battery for my G1, not to mention the environmental benefits the technology would bring.

  • This was majorly cool. It definitely applies to me, as my cell phone battery lasts about 10 hours on a good day.

  • And yet, you, who whilst making rude comments insulting someone's intelligence, do not use apostrophes or capitalization appropriately. :)

  • wat! there are pull strings for the OLPC? how many times do you have to pull it? :O the poor children's arms!

  • one pull is enough for 20-25 minutes of talk time on a cell phone.

  • Wait, what if you combine the solar-panel and the radio waves? The solar won't help when the phone is in your pocket, but if it's in your pocket, it is stand-by, so the waves would be enough anyway.

And if it's not in stand-by, your probably hurrying to get it OUT of your pocket to talk into it, exposing it to the sun or whatever light source is near you.

  • Yeah i only ever use my mobile phone as a phone and also for texting, everything else thats on it i never use

  • people woulden't put pull strings on their phones even though they would work. number one people are too lazy to think of a way to make that work and number two people want smaller cell phones so the draw string woulden't work. its a good idea though

  • I only charge my cell phone once every two weeks, but I almost never use it. I wind-up phone would be amazing.

  • I don't actually like cellphones. I admit on a few rare occasions one would come in handy, but for the most part I doubt I would even use one. Instead I have a land-line phone which is an original 1935 black, northern electric phone. You don't even have to plug it in to power it!(which is especially good when the power is out during a storm...)

  • I still think a hamster on a treadmill is the best solution. In the future, we may even be able to teach them to dial for us.

  • hmm, wind-up phone...

    haven't that been invented?!

  • this is awesome Hank, really awesome!

  • how about kinetic energy? like the fancy watches you can get? or the ambient heat from your body?

  • Wow, this sounds rather fantastic. I thought about having ones you shake like those torches then realised that that is magnets and would ruin the phone parts of the phone... :)

  • I can see the awesomeness of self-powered phones, but the fact is, more and more people are coming to rely on the internet as a means of communication, in some cases more than they use phones. This creates a much higher demand for devices such as the iPhone, compared to that for simple devices like the Nokia 1100. So while it may be possible to power simple devices without a plug, I don't know that it's very practical.

  • Not sure about your pocket calculator argument. Your calculator never had to do anything while it was actually in your pocket. Your phone does. :D
