Ok, lol, so how do I get to pick up their 'lingo' & at least a little of the accent. My God-Father was in the states for 17 yrs, so, like Craig, he lost alot of the thick accent, but is regaining it! UUggh! When I watch Craig, I learn far more from his Dirt Detective series than anything. He teaches alot of what I want to learn there, as well as at first I couldn't understand him, his was so thick. --Much like yours when you speak slang :) --sorry no offense meant there...LOL
Hi, I'm going to St. Andrews to visit my God-Father, & check out castle ruins, etc. I started watching tons of Craig Ferguson & his show Dirt Detective to gain understanding/accent, but still can't put together simple phrases to help me not look like an idiot. If you ever get time, coulld you make one that explains that? I picked up some from Craig, but glad I ran across your videos! You're doing an awesome job!!!
@studiopro1964 lol the main thing to understand, our first language is English and main language. So if you spoke normally, people would perfectly understand you. I think the important thing is, that so long as you get to understand their lingo, you'd understand them. St. Andrews is... how do I put it? Rather much a posh sort of place, it's beautiful mind you, but don't expect them to be broad spoken, you'd understand them with ease I think :)
@studiopro1964 My advice to anyone learning the accent, never look to someone like Craig Ferguson, who has a strong tinge of American accent. Really the best way is to immerse yourself amongst the people and culture :) learning how we say and speak certain words, because pronunciation goes a long way :)
I'm from America and have been to Edinburgh. I loved it and think it would be fun to live there someday. These videos sorta give a perspective into the language aspect of Scottish culture, so kudos to you for taking time to do this. :)
@knightscribe7 Cheers pal :) it's what I aim to do for people, to show the real way we speak, our people and our land :) if I achieve any of that, am happy :) and glad you loved Scotland, Edinburgh is a beautiful city :)
thx for sharing this :) ScottMcK9...just came back from Edinburgh...have been interested in Scottish accents since the 1st time I've been there...the rolling "R" attracts me ;)...
@frostylunetta Not a problem at all :) hope you enjoyed your time in Scotland of course, and I can some what understand that, I love foreign accents :D
I love your accent. And Scotland. Could you tell something about this hypnotizing "R" that Scottish people use? I'm from Poland and even though I've tried milions of times to make this sound while speaking english at the end it's nothing alike :(
On my phonetics classes we're thought proper english so I'm trying to extend my knowledge on my own ;)
@marika147 Hi Marika, it's very hard to teach the rolling 'r', the best I can describe to you, it's not over done, but it's like when you go to roll your tongue slightly you hit the tip of your tongue ever so quickly off the top of your gum when you say the 'r', maybe I'll do a video on it at some point to help people like yourself :) i'll definitely get around to that :) and thanks :)
@peacefrog1916 lol cheers bud, thing is, I take pride in being British second to Scottish, but being proud of being British for our history, not because of the Union 400 years ago. I think people forget the wee bit that when the Romans marched on our land, we were technically British people, just given different name. My saltire is up next to my American flag, which are my 2 favourites :) and aye, am patriotically Scottish bud.
hi scotty yeah i get wat u mean. My brother luke is struggling like a bas. But course in bio.chemistry is getting to him? As for me i just like gaming like mw3 and gta and making clips even though i get slagged through some people. I know i shouldent bother but they make me mad at times. Also my mum says hi also. It was the goatee your mate has that she seams to like ha ha sad bitch. Anyway take it easy mate mick.
@mickthepenguin I can understand Mick, am the same as yourself, but I do Graphic Design, and a bit of Web Design, trying to get business site up and running, but things won't really start get going again till February, still, things slowly coming along. I have GTAIV and Liberty City, loved them both, can't wait for the 5th version to come out. It's a shame you can't play folk online who have the PS3 if you have XBOX Live, that's always been a down fall of online gaming I suppose.
@janjohansen6 I get what you mean, I was told Italian is very difficult to learn, it's a shame really, as for German lol I think I know where you're coming from, learned basics in school, that was hard enough, saying that, enver really had the interest.
Not gonna lie Scott, I got lost so many times in this videos. I couldn't keep up with all the different word variations, got a bit confused with all this knowledge you're bringing us lol
@BrickCityBoy89 lol I understand that mate, it's cause a lot of words we tend to speak, are very different in Scots language, so it's not just an accent people are dealing with, but our own sort of words. That's one of the biggest reasons I got around to making these sort of videos, because without it, most people wouldn't have a scooby lol
hi scott ive watched a few of your videos and do like the ben.nevis your mate who has the goatee. Is like nicholas cage? Hope he doesent take offence as my mum looked at it and she said omg he looks like nick cage. Anyway ill email again sometime as i got more animation to do also are u at uni? If so wat one as my big brov at edinbrugh doing chemistry yeah he got the brains? He not so good at animation as me though.! Anyway thanx mickthepenguin.
@mickthepenguin I'm not at uni at all bud, was doing a home uni course earlier though, but in the end, it means nothing, what truly matters in Graphic and Web Design, is learning on your own and gaining experience, because these days, qualifications count for very little. As for my friend? lol I'm not sure if he does :)
but i trying to get scottish to da this cartoon voice and my animation need to be morer like a seeson feel daing it meh? If you da how we goney da it ? Have you got a ps3 ? We can da that on ps3 if you have one :(
want to make mickthepenguin seeson with me ? A scottish cartoon i need more penguin chariter's and voice's some random scottish person's want to do it ? I well make a chariter for you :3
@mickthepenguin lol I'm not so great when it comes to voice over things, plus I'll most probably be busy when it comes to doing Graphic work, plus editing the videos I have alone. I may put you under my recommendations however, to get you more views etc :)
@sumpan86 Thank you :) I greatly appreciate your kind words. May I also add that if anyone tries to tell you that I'm speaking like a ned, kindly tell them to get lost :) I'm far from a ned, and I honestly only give out Glaswegian,
@ScottMcK9 is a ned a hooligan? google told me it is a scottish slang for hooligan and a big picture of you in a rangers top and a uk hat :p but a see it could also mean homeless criminal. people called people from gorbals for neds(homeless criminal)
you don't look like a homeless and i don't know if you are a hooligan. based on your other videos you are not.
@sumpan86 lol of course I'm not a gang fighting hooligan that goes out slashing and stabbing folk. I was never into gangs, because it's stupid and it's pointless. And a ned speaks nothing at all like your typical Glaswegian :) and thanks :)
@mickthepenguin Was born and bred Glaswegian, aye, born in the east end, as for age, am 27, will be 28 in April lol look young for ma age, I can say that.
@janjohansen6 hahaha that's completely mad, you have to admire people like that though, you have to be smart and very dedicated to pick up and learn languages, thing is, some people are more natural at it than others.
@janjohansen6 Some people are good at that, Mario's fantastic with language, and you're pretty smart like that yourself, you certainly know your stuff.
Your own video style of pointing words and translating on what was written on paper was great
@janjohansen6 lol that's more or less it Jan, perhaps it helps that I've spoken with many Scottish words in my videos, that you understand the structure and meaning of these words. although you missed out 'e which was 'the'. Giving people an understanding to how we speak, makes it less daunting for them, that way if they ever do come to Scotland, that at least get to understand to a certain degree.
@mynoon1999 As in the word 'way' as in, 'which way to go?' The word 'way' in that circumstance is more or less the same, although in Glasgow, we do say the word way as 'wiy', like 'which wiy ye gaun?' The word 'way' as in 'with' can also be said as 'wiy'. This is the reason Scottish can be difficult for folk to understand, but when you understand the structure of a sentence, they automatically understand which 'way' a Scot is talking about, if you catch my drift.
@ScottMcK9 Yes I understand, it's all about what words are said befor and after it, also to what the way means. I live very close to Scotland and some Scottish people who lived up the road from me came to my house, I couldn't understand one for them he spoke to fast, and he was a little shit. But all the things you said, even in your real tongue I could understand.
@mynoon1999 I think it depends mate, there's sometimes slanger than myself, and it really depends where they come from, they might come from a different part of Scotland, like I say, different parts of Scotland, speak very differently. In my opinion though, if people can understand Glaswegian, they should understand quite a lot. Just that in different parts, there's different terminology for certain things.
