Pink Floyd is my biggest inspiration, mostly Syd for trippy music and the insane amount of weed he smoked and then going crazy. I try to music like them but not as good as Pink Floyd but please check it out I would be much obliged
@jhoch5 ps. You should check out The Jesus And Mary Chain's version of Vegetable Man on the B-Side of their Upside Down single, on of the best cover versions of any song ever !
The bottom line is that Pink Floyd could not have been, with or without Syd. His contribution to the band is immeasurable. He founded them, wrote their first songs and gave them the name, image and material to be the band they became. Their most successful albums are about him and their feelings towards him and his breakdown. Had Syd remained in the band we would not have the same Pink Floyd we all know and love.
@Deathryzer you don't know anything, waters and mason founded the band, syd joined later, waters named the band, and the bands first actual successes were either wrote by waters or wright, barrett was an overrated hophead, and the best thing he ever did for the band was suck and get kicked out
@jhoch5 Waters and mason were in a band before Syd joined but it wasn't Pink Floyd. Their first songs were Arnold Layne and See Emily Play, whether or not you consider them "successes" is up to you but that's what started them off. Plus, Barrett wrote the whole first album. And he did come up with the name Pink Floyd. I don't know where you got the idea that waters came up with the name, that's simply untrue. Syd had albums by Pink Anderson and Floyd Council, there's a story to it.
@Deathryzer um actually, you are wrong again, they changed their name some point after barrett joined, but it was the same band, with mostly the same members, and he joined while it was called that name, and he did not solely write the first album, Wright and Waters also contributed, and barrett only became the front man when the original front man had to go on duty with the royal air force
@jhoch5 Believe whatever you like but the truth is available if you care to seek it out. And it's what I said. If you just wanna bash Barrett there's plenty of ways to do it but don't try to take the truth and mangle it into some version that you like better.
I challenge you to find me a source where it states that Roger Waters named Pink Floyd. You won't find it. And sure, Wright and Waters helped, so did Mason but Syd wrote all the words and named the album "Piper".
@jhoch5 Chris Dennis and Syd Barrett were both in The Tea Set with Waters, Mason and Wright, which was the band that later changed name to Pink Floyd. The other members were reportedly relieved that Chris Dennis went to the middle-east and Barrett filled his role as front-man and eventually Barrett named them "The Pink Floyd Sound" after two obscure American blues musicians called Pink Andersson and Floyd Council.
@jhoch5 During 65-67 Syd Barrett wrote almost all their songs, their first singles Arnold Layne and See Emily Play and all but two of the tracks on the Piper. Then he was replaced by Gilmour.

Very welcome to have a listen to AirwavesJoxfields Vegetable (Elephant ) Man with Joxfields tribute-to-David-Gilmour's-ca-1971-playing guitar at 1.59. If you make a visit; hope you enjoy it! Cheers!
Woooow!!, this is like a psychedelic/experimental/rockn'roll kinda song.........the unreleased ones are pretty good, my favorite, Corrosion in the Pink Room!!......
what is everybody complaining about? i love all of pink floyds work. you all say this and that is bad and i own nearly every floyd album and i look at the album and notice how i love nearly every song on nearly every album. it doesnt matter what time in floyds career it is it is still good, even waters and gilmours and syds solo stuff is good. i dont believe they ever made a bad album and never will.
Bloody insane that this ballsy track has still never been released. It's greater than all post-Waters Floyd albums just for starters. Barrett prefigures punk nihilism here - in 1967!
I loved Syd but he really messed himself up and fame wasn't really ever for him but he is iconic and pink floyd would never exist without all those unique songs r.i.p. Rodger Barrett
Imagine how crazy this must've sounded when he played it alone on just guitar? Crazy in a GOOD way. That guitar in the background is ejaculating all over.
He basically explained what he was wearing then threw in the whole "vegetable man" chorus. But gee, all of his songs have such a deep meaning to them. I dunno about the rest of you, but I feel as if I could completely identify with Syd for some reason.. I try my best to put myself in other people's shoes. This song deeply depresses me, though. It's hard to watch such a brilliant man's mind deteriorate. Well.. I'm 15 so I didn't exactly WATCH it happen..
I would pick Piper over any Floyd album. I would pick Roger Barrett over any of the bandmates solo stuff. I would pick Syd over most of the ever-flowing current of total crap being tossed out to an ever ready crowd of eager purchasers...booooo!
@thenowuk My God, a fellow Pink Floyd fan who actually acknowledges that all of Pink Floyd's post Animals albums were crap? I just thought it all was just dreck.
@thenowuk So true! I live in the States and when Wish You Were Here was released, I asked my Ma to buy me a Pink Floyd album, my first being Relics. Being twelve at the time, I was like "WHAT IS THIS, THIS IS SCARY!" It is now one of my all time favorite albums and I laugh at all my friends who brag about discovering Barrett when they were in their twenties.
@gahrzahk When I was 15 (1988) I got A Momentary Lapse of Reason because I liked the cover. The album was shite tho! (a momentary lapse of talent) -then, a few months later, a friend got me Relics and Piper and I was blown away.
@PearlJammer07 Well, his name is Roger Keith "Syd" Barrett. I think after he left the public eye he did not want to be called Syd, though I and everyone still do
@thenowuk :) I get really moved by alot of his sold stuff. I think "If its in you", "Dark Globe", "Octopus", "I never lief to you" etc etc are just hidden treasures. I tr y to lure my friends into Syd Barrett stuff by telling his story about founding the Floyd, and having great success, and how he was really going to, in my opinion, be up there with the likes of Lennon if he had not have shunned all of it to go home and paint. Then I hope they listen to the words...never works though
@portcityperson Don't forget "Waving My Arms in the Air". When he sings the lines, "No one in the land, no one," and "You shouldn't try to be what you can't be," it makes me want to cry.
Jesus is the only hope of salvation from the guilt of sin. He is God come in the flesh. And he came to wash away our sins with his blood that he shed on the cross. Salvation is a free gift, but you must repent and ask Jesus to save you from your sins and come into your heart. God is good. It is written, "The just shall live by his faith."
Sid Barret: the greatest influence on Pink Floyd. Without him, we may not have such staples as "Dark Side of the Moon." It's interesting to see how the Pink Floyd were inspired by his moments of craziness. Songs like "Wish You were Here" and "Comfortably Numb" were direct references to the original songwriter/singer.
@67675656565655656565 probably not even on most underground stations, I guess its just because if you think about psychedelic music of today, the ones trying to emulate the 60's pop mix it up with modern type of elements. Many of the things on piper at the gates of dawn, the lyrical themes etc are not really associated with any type of music, I mean things about gno,es fantasy things etc...
@Hendrix1820 yeah thats why i find it so strange how popular pink flloyd are these days.Just like the average joe likes them yet if a similar band came out no they wouldnt get airplay and would be considered somewhat of being alternative for liking them.
@67675656565655656565 yeah totally right man, I am sure there are ones juist like earlier pink floyd but again, because they are not pink floyd they don't get airplay.
@67675656565655656565 i dont think it got much (if any) airplay back then either. It wasn't "pop" enough sounding. Songs of thiers like "See Emily Play" and "Arnold Layne" got airplay, but at that point, Floyd was sort of an "underground rave" band in London. (I was obsessed with Syd Barretts songwriting when I was younger and read a lot of books about them) But you're right, it sure as hell wouldn't get any airplay now. Not much worth listening to does in 2011.
@dreekd80 yeah popular music is in a sad state of affairs these days used to be all about talent and being creative but now its just all about looks and money.
We'll never know now what idea Syd had for the two saxophones. I'm not knocking Saucer or any other Floyd album. The other guys in the band weren't who Syd thought they were. They had no sense of humor. Syd was a very funny guy, they were uptight grannies. He just couldn't find other guys that he thought he could be in a band with after the floyd. Simple as that. He just didn't care anymore. No flies on Syd!
Vegatable Man is a great song either way you look at it. Management wanted to capitalize on Emily and Piper with a hit single. Syd didn't care about these kinds of things. Like his paintings he finishes them and moves on to the next idea. He never lost any of his potency until he just didn't care anymore. Roger saying that getting two female saxophonists was weird. They started to doubt his ideas. If you don't believe in his ideas anymore,of course he is going to feel alienated.
Recently I have been reading a lot of interviews etc. And I have come to the conclusion that the drug story is bullshit. See Emily Play became a hit before Piper right. They had become Pop Stars. All of a sudden their a success out of no where. I like quotes, they reveal a lot. Syd said after Emily that we'll put out what we want to,and if the kids like it they like it,and if it doesn't sell big deal. That sounds like an artist to me,not a pop star.
imagine if Roger waters never turned pink Floyd into a phenomenon...we never would know of Syd!!..yes Pink Floyd Owes Syd a lot...and the legacy of Syd owes Roger and gilmour the same.....Pink Floyd never would have been what they are with syd, he was just too off the wall for the time....i love him...thanks for uploading, just thought i'd put my 2 cents in
Will the new September 2011 remaster of Piper feature this track and / or Scream Thy Last Scream on a bonus edition?
I tried looking online for info but just found the "Discovery" edition which is the normal 11 track album.
It's doing my head in that these tracks are still unavailable. It's taking the piss. Every fan wants them, what the hell are the band playing at by keeping them locked up?
If they aren't released this September, will they EVER?
@Jarren202 That's unknown at the moment. There are some other Immersion-Deluxe-Boxes to be released, but no one knows which albums..so it's possible that these songs se light soon...but no one knoes!
@Jarren202 Unfortunately, for september and the next year, we heard about The Wall, The DSOTM...but nothing new about the early Pink Floyd (except a remaster of the Piper....the last is 4 years) It's a shame.
@luciebarrett That's not completely true. Mason said that they listened to very old Syd-Material, which is - in my opinion - a hint to a future release.
@BenefitOfMrKite That sounds like very good news. Let's hope Nick persuades the powers-that-be to include the tracks!
I really don't get why the tracks have never been released. It's not like they're some long lost DSOTM cut that'll send every Pink Floyd fan into a frenzy and buy the album again.
They're two very specific Barrett tracks that will basically appeal to Barrett / Piper-era fans, so not exactly "money in the bank" items guaranteed to make the band a fortune.
@Jarren202 In this months Uncut Magazine Nick Mason alludes to ALL of Syd's unreleased Pink Floyd material getting a release possibly next summer. As for them getting a release on this forthcoming boxset I'm afraid the answer is no...
@BaronVonPenguin Sounds promising, though I'll not get my hopes up. I would have thought the prime time to release the material would be now, around the fan fare of the remasters.
I'm really losing hope on Vegetable Man / Scream Thy Last Scream ever being released.
@Jarren202 Listen man, nearly twenty fucking years of my life I've been waiting and I ain't giving up yet!! I was equally obsessed with SMiLE by The Beach Boys and even thats coming out in October. I dread to think how much money I've spent on bootlegs of Syd Barrett/Pink Floyd and as you say the fans are the ones who suffer. Think of the bleedin money EMI and Pink Floyd have missed out on by not releasing them. Apparently its been Roger Waters all along who was the main nay sayer...
@BaronVonPenguin Yeah, it seems that the Barrett / Piper era is usually brushed under the carpet.
You're right to keep hope, I should do the same but it's hard when you see how much money Pink Floyd make from the more obvious sources (DSOTM, Wall etc).
@Jarren202 The impression I got from Mason's interview in Uncut is that this is indeed the last gasp for the Floyd to wring out the last of the cash from the fans. That cash register sample at the start of Money is becoming more and more apt as the years go by. It must be gas alright especially when its piling into your already bulging wallet Roger!

Syd was so ahead of his time.. this is punk. Also, as someone previously mentioned, his stuff was getting heavier. There's no telling where he would have taken it.
one of rock's greatest unreleased songs. i hope the surviving members of pink floyd choose to honor syd's memory by releasing this and "scream thy last scream."
This song and all of the Floyds songs with Syd are superb beyond words-the man was a genius-simple as that and when he left they were totally different as far as I am concerned. This song and many others are designed to be listened to in a suitable enhanced state of mind-as the men themselves were makingh, writing and recording the songs. The reverb in and outs are exactly the noises one hears during an excellent LSD experience-mindblowingly excellently amazing-for those of sound brain-
has this song ever had a remastering? i don't believe so.. but it needs to be! such a badass song.. In yellow shoes I get the blues though I walk the streets with my plastic feet
@d3f2r1 Ah...I see what you did there....using the number of dislikes and a cute little reference to the song title....Clever...Clever...No one ever does that....
This is a cynical and sad song.

what is everybody complaining about? i love all of pink floyds work. you all say this and that is bad and i own nearly every floyd album and i look at the album and notice how i love nearly every song on nearly every album. it doesnt matter what time in floyds career it is it is still good, even waters and gilmours and syds solo stuff is good. i dont believe they ever made a bad album and never will.

Bloody insane that this ballsy track has still never been released. It's greater than all post-Waters Floyd albums just for starters. Barrett prefigures punk nihilism here - in 1967!

I would pick Syd over most of the ever-flowing current of total crap being tossed out to an ever ready crowd of eager purchasers...booooo!

thenowuk 3 months ago
@thenowuk So true! I live in the States and when Wish You Were Here was released, I asked my Ma to buy me a Pink Floyd album, my first being Relics. Being twelve at the time, I was like "WHAT IS THIS, THIS IS SCARY!" It is now one of my all time favorite albums and I laugh at all my friends who brag about discovering Barrett when they were in their twenties.
gahrzahk 3 months ago

67675656565655656565 5 months ago
@67675656565655656565 probably not even on most underground stations, I guess its just because if you think about psychedelic music of today, the ones trying to emulate the 60's pop mix it up with modern type of elements. Many of the things on piper at the gates of dawn, the lyrical themes etc are not really associated with any type of music, I mean things about gno,es fantasy things etc...
Its a shame though
Hendrix1820 5 months ago
@Hendrix1820 yeah thats why i find it so strange how popular pink flloyd are these days.Just like the average joe likes them yet if a similar band came out no they wouldnt get airplay and would be considered somewhat of being alternative for liking them.
67675656565655656565 5 months ago
@67675656565655656565 yeah totally right man, I am sure there are ones juist like earlier pink floyd but again, because they are not pink floyd they don't get airplay.
Hendrix1820 5 months ago
@67675656565655656565 i dont think it got much (if any) airplay back then either. It wasn't "pop" enough sounding. Songs of thiers like "See Emily Play" and "Arnold Layne" got airplay, but at that point, Floyd was sort of an "underground rave" band in London. (I was obsessed with Syd Barretts songwriting when I was younger and read a lot of books about them) But you're right, it sure as hell wouldn't get any airplay now. Not much worth listening to does in 2011.

WorldMusicKollective 6 months ago
Vegatable Man is a great song either way you look at it. Management wanted to capitalize on Emily and Piper with a hit single. Syd didn't care about these kinds of things. Like his paintings he finishes them and moves on to the next idea. He never lost any of his potency until he just didn't care anymore. Roger saying that getting two female saxophonists was weird. They started to doubt his ideas. If you don't believe in his ideas anymore,of course he is going to feel alienated.
WorldMusicKollective 6 months ago
Recently I have been reading a lot of interviews etc. And I have come to the conclusion that the drug story is bullshit. See Emily Play became a hit before Piper right. They had become Pop Stars. All of a sudden their a success out of no where. I like quotes, they reveal a lot. Syd said after Emily that we'll put out what we want to,and if the kids like it they like it,and if it doesn't sell big deal. That sounds like an artist to me,not a pop star.

I have a question:
Will the new September 2011 remaster of Piper feature this track and / or Scream Thy Last Scream on a bonus edition?
I tried looking online for info but just found the "Discovery" edition which is the normal 11 track album.
It's doing my head in that these tracks are still unavailable. It's taking the piss. Every fan wants them, what the hell are the band playing at by keeping them locked up?
If they aren't released this September, will they EVER?
/end rant

Jarren202 6 months ago
@Jarren202 Unfortunately, for september and the next year, we heard about The Wall, The DSOTM...but nothing new about the early Pink Floyd (except a remaster of the Piper....the last is 4 years) It's a shame.
luciebarrett 6 months ago
@luciebarrett That's not completely true. Mason said that they listened to very old Syd-Material, which is - in my opinion - a hint to a future release.
BenefitOfMrKite 6 months ago
@BenefitOfMrKite I hope you're right ;-)
luciebarrett 6 months ago
@BenefitOfMrKite That sounds like very good news. Let's hope Nick persuades the powers-that-be to include the tracks!
I really don't get why the tracks have never been released. It's not like they're some long lost DSOTM cut that'll send every Pink Floyd fan into a frenzy and buy the album again.
They're two very specific Barrett tracks that will basically appeal to Barrett / Piper-era fans, so not exactly "money in the bank" items guaranteed to make the band a fortune.
Long overdue.
Jarren202 6 months ago
@BenefitOfMrKite all of the remaining members have refused to include it, so it will never be heard outside of bootlegs

@Jarren202 In this months Uncut Magazine Nick Mason alludes to ALL of Syd's unreleased Pink Floyd material getting a release possibly next summer. As for them getting a release on this forthcoming boxset I'm afraid the answer is no...
BaronVonPenguin 5 months ago
@BaronVonPenguin Sounds promising, though I'll not get my hopes up. I would have thought the prime time to release the material would be now, around the fan fare of the remasters.
I'm really losing hope on Vegetable Man / Scream Thy Last Scream ever being released.
I don't think anyone cares apart from the fans.
Jarren202 5 months ago
@Jarren202 Listen man, nearly twenty fucking years of my life I've been waiting and I ain't giving up yet!! I was equally obsessed with SMiLE by The Beach Boys and even thats coming out in October. I dread to think how much money I've spent on bootlegs of Syd Barrett/Pink Floyd and as you say the fans are the ones who suffer. Think of the bleedin money EMI and Pink Floyd have missed out on by not releasing them. Apparently its been Roger Waters all along who was the main nay sayer...
BaronVonPenguin 5 months ago
@BaronVonPenguin Yeah, it seems that the Barrett / Piper era is usually brushed under the carpet.
You're right to keep hope, I should do the same but it's hard when you see how much money Pink Floyd make from the more obvious sources (DSOTM, Wall etc).
Jarren202 5 months ago
@Jarren202 The impression I got from Mason's interview in Uncut is that this is indeed the last gasp for the Floyd to wring out the last of the cash from the fans. That cash register sample at the start of Money is becoming more and more apt as the years go by. It must be gas alright especially when its piling into your already bulging wallet Roger!
BaronVonPenguin 5 months ago
@Jarren202 according to whypinkfloyd nick mason wants to do a piper/saucerful immersion with loads of old barrett recordings.
