I don't compete but I've been running brushless for years now. My main putter has a 10A lipo tethered to a Kontronik Twist. I still can't get used to the run times :p
hands down electric is ruling the world right now. Nitro is much more inexpensive when compared to electric. But than think of it over the course of a year. Nitro fuel at $30 a gallon. New motor cause you got to have the hot thing on the market to keep up with everyone anywhere from $150- $300. With that said over the course of a year electric does actually come out cheaper. That is my opinion. Think about it. Esc and motor $299 battery high end hyperion 4s 5000mah g3 pack $128 or $159 30c
nitro and electric are both fun both have there pros and cons nitro is still a tiny bit faster just do to constant rpms but not by much and a really fast electric costs a heck of a lot more , however once the electric is set up and geared it will not need much to keep it that way i had a traxxas bandit before the vxl came out on early lipo and a novak gtx with a 4500kv motor and that thing was quick nearly caught up to the t maxx i had
not quite that far many nitros are slow but if you look at the jatos and what not hitting 70 mph stock without needing a huge battery that cost as much s most cheap nitro engines id lean to nitro for speed however its getting to that stage where electric will and is faster in many cases and after a while electric will save you cash and headaches when nitro engines fail , with electric many good motors allow you to change out the magnets and get um going again and they cost less to keep going
guys nitro sucks coz it is highly unreliable compared to brushless and lipo. brushless system has enough puch to out run nitro and also hassel free. go brushless.
That's sweet. It's not easy to do a car that big... takes a good choice of components and decent chunk of change too! lol
Sounds like an impressive setup. A six pack of the new TrueRC 6000mah lipos would make a sweet lipo pack... they are hardcase, and have 4mm female connectors on the side of pack so you could daisy chain them real easy, and you wouldn't have to tear apart a huge pack to toss one bad cell.
Sure... they knew. Well, I guess there could have been a few guys that didn't know... but all the A main guys did. :)
Those guys have been cool about running with an electric... they don't mind the challenge. Tracks around here have been that way, fortunately. I get some ribbing from some guys, but nothing too bad.
That was my first time on that track, ever... had just a couple quals in before this main... and was a little shaky on the first couple laps.
I just deleted a couple of posts here that were ignorant and offensive. Take that stupidity elsewhere.
A good brushless setup does not have to be cooled down between runs... not the battery, motor, nothing. The car in the video ran for 30 minutes on a single battery charge and could do it all day long, btw.
I have nitros too btw. Guess what? They are toys too. Guess who dominates the nitro racing? Electric racers... Hara, Maifiled, Cav, Tebo.... Those guys are fast because they run electric.
I was running a maxamps 4s 8000 pack in the video... which was good for 30 minutes on our outdoor track, and could have run for about 45 on that indoor track.
Most brushless cars won't get 30 minutes, though. We normally run a smaller battery now, like a 5000 pack which gives runtimes of about 15-20 minutes for most guys.
i understand that but once u get a brushless on an electric thats it on nitro u can keep buying shit for it yea u can buy stuff for ele. but it wieghs it down and kills the battery and u only have what 15 min of run time with a good battery nitro u can keep going u dont have to stop after each tank and let the motor cool down ive had both and im way more satisfied with nitro
I have no idea what electrics you've played with but let me clear up some misconceptions. Provided you have access to power source (car or outlet), a decent charger and a couple of batteries you can constantly run electric as your spare batteries charges as your using the other. You do not need to let the motor cool down after a run, if you do you are doing something wrong. I don't understand what you mean by there are no upgrades for electric's, when there are in fact just as many as nitro.
LOL... I've never actually had to run 60 min. Most big races are 30 or 45 min. On tracks like in the video I can do 30 easy if I run a high cap battery. So for 45 or 60 min, I would do one pit stop for a battery change. :)
Hey there is another thing you'd win in. pitting :) with a 30 min run time thats a 1 stop strategy:) and its quicker too iv seen some drivers do some crazy fast pitting with battery changes, some about 4 seconds. with a decent strap, and good access, oh and practice too, it is possible. :) im not hating on nitros, i mean we all love em to bits really, own a few myself. Its just theyve gone nowhere for decades. whereas electric has come on in leaps and bounds. just my two pence. cheers great vid.
Depends on the set up in each car. All things being equal, the electric car has instant torque throughout the power band. Electric would win on the average course. I love nitro but welcome back electric buggies!
I just love the fact that more and more electric conversions are coming out. I use to run nitro and gas cars in the past, so been there done that and got the T-shirt. Doing nothing but electrics lately and I will never go back. More power , more runtime , easy maintenance , fewer parts count , less expensive in the long run.
I think nitro's downfall is the fact that nitro/glow engine technology hasn't changed in over 50 years. I mean, come on... I want to see a high performance 4 stroke V8 that will fit properly in a 1/8th scale vehicle. But oh no, manufacturers think technology is seeing how many ports they can fit in a two stroke glow engine....... Dirtbikes have made the leap to 4 stroke and they now pwn 2 stokes and are almost the same weight. If not a v8, I'll settle for a v4.
i love nitro but i have to agree. with nitro the oil attracts so much dirt that your car will never be cleanable easy. and electric has max HP ant 1rpm while nitro can hit max HP around 29,000 which is why that little car out accelerated all the nitro cars
There's this wonderful new technology called "batteries," which allows you to use a different "batt" while charging the other. Amazing how that works.
At the end of the video it says what motor it uses. Surprisingly, it's a 1515 2.5D (1650kV) - which is much slower than what you thought (3300kV). He must be using a huge pinion gear probably.
It is simply not fair to put a electric in nitro class. It is like putting diesel and gasoline in the same class. They are completely different types of vehicles. Granted electric will beat any nitro as it is evolving so much but it's just simply not fair.... I wouldn't even have joined if I saw what was running in that buggy. A driver that sucks could win with that thing.
Actually... I killed those same guys with a nitro buggy too. That was the BMain because I missed my qualifiers and I was just plain faster than them and would have walked away with any car.
The fast guys at the track have no problem with it even after letting them drive the car.
I would say there are some small advantages with the electric but it not what you think. It's still all about the driver. The same guys that beat me in other classes like 1/10 mod buggy... also beat me in 1/8 buggy, and vice versa, whether I run nitro or electric.
As much as I would like to agree with you, i've found electric only has a major advantage in onroad. Offroad the nitro can still hold their own quite well.
LOL! I agree with you, Im a nitro fan, but I swear to god if your a talented racer running a strong Nitro set up, offroad, its not that hard to win. Not to mention, Electric have sh1t house run times. Finally, theres not question brushless is faster, but in a propper race course, it is quite possible for a nitro to win. If you cant win.. then upgrade your truck? (P.S. If your onroad with nitro.. give up)
Which kit did you go with or did you fab your own? Looking at doing the same thing but unsure where to get a kit from. The only thing I can see on rcproductions website is the motor mounts. Any help would be appreciated.
This was posted a year ago. At that point there was little to no production for these conversions.
Right now there aren't complete "kits" for converting, however they're easy to put together by hand. Motor mounts and battery trays are in production and available but other various aspects have to be done by hand. But those two get you 90% of the way there. Check out my videos for more info on 8ight conversions.
Nice work with the conversion. I love to watch these brushless videos on Youtube, they simply haul ass and the acceleration is very evident.
For bashings sake, I like the ability to just fill up and go, and then refill again and again. But if I ever start racing, I know where the advantage is.
An ideal pack is a good 4s @5000mah pack like a Flightpower or Neu 4900 or Kokam 4800 or Maxamps 5000
But I can fit as much as a Maxamps 4s 8000mah pack in my 8ight, which will easily make a 30 min race.. might even do 45 on this indoor track with a smooth driving style.
It's just a regular Mamba max esc, but the motor is a different brand. The only thing that is "special" is that I use a separate BEC to power the rx and servo, because the 4s lipo voltage is too high to use the esc's internal BEC.
Motors I run are Neu 15 series. I have a 1512 1900kv and a 1515 1700kv, and I gear it high. some other guys run higher kv and gear it lower. Either way can work fine.
Runtime depends on what battery is used of course. I have a 4800mah pack that is good for a 20-25 min race but I also can run an 8000mah pack that can probably do 40 min.
