  • Don't bother reading the dim-witted, self gratifying egotistical comments below...

Mr Jansen isn't only trying to get from point A to point B with his creations, He is creating a kinetic sculpture that "lives"

They can be powered by the wind, sun and sea & store that energy in plastic bottles for use later. they can walk endlessly or to the ocean and after filling the bottles sense the waves are too close simply walk away or if the wind is to strong it can lower it's wing to protect itself

  • ok. I get the premise. on flat ground this object walks with no energy being spent on standing... very useful for study but since it can only walk on flat ground, it is not of much use, what is the next step to allow it to handle terrain that wheels can not (the only real use for a walking machine.

  • @TAPriceCTR these were designed for beaches and sand. Theo looks at these sculptures as a new form of life so, i would guess, to him saying they should be able to handle rough terrain etc would be like expecting whales to climb trees.. what makes the walking mechanism amazing is that the axle (or hip i suppose) stays level, Theo Jansen has reinvented the wheel! Some of the more complex ones even have a mechanical brain, as far as i can tell they have about 8bits of memory. Its pretty spectacular

  • @Proxima256 he did not reinvent the wheel, he merely worked someone elses invention into his artwork. and again, what is the advantage? it weighs more and takes up much more space than the wheel, if it is restricted to terrain the wheel can handle there is no advantage.

yes a mechanical ganglia is impressive but he wisely keeps the operations analog which means no matter how advanced it can not be compared to "bits"

  • @TAPriceCTR Could you please reference who came up with the concept originally? The advantage would be that it does not have to touch every point between 2 points in order to get there (like a wheel). Also the surface area touching the sand is much larger. I wouldnt be so quick to say it weighs more, though obviously it may take up more space.

It uses a mechanical, binary step counter, the motors/pumps drive rams that push the creature forward, not the legs, so in fact the whole thing is binary

  • @Proxima256

interesting... guess he does have credit for the walker.

not having to touch every point does not necessarily create an advantage. the additional weight of these legs will more than override any advantage over a basic wheel drive, however now that I think about it, weight is a valuable attribute for a wind driven device but I am still pretty sure a wheeled mechanism could be made more effective in speed and versitility... but walking is what makes him believe he created life.

  • absolutely inspired.

  • wow only a fucking redneck would think putting wd-40 on something like this would work.........

  • this CG so real ! like true.what Desney's is real

  • I must see more of this!! think of MIT and all these Robot scientists and this artist comes up with a walking robot powered by the wind!! stunning!!

  • hungry for wd 40

  • bet it cant transport a rhinoceros:o

  • -Gdyby zamontować tam wahadło które by działało na siłę ruchu to by trochę dalej szło... Pozdrawiam.

  • aww, i wanted it to trample that car... :(

  • Crush the car!

  • It's mechanical, not reactive like it needs to be for ground that isn't flat

  • A little oil would make a big difference in making the thing work. Why didn't this "genius" think of that?

  • man, only if he made dedals to control and a seat,,,,!!!! a person would feel so powerful driving that thing!

  • very neat,, maybe stuff like that helped them make the pyramids.

  • thats scary

  • he should lubricate it

  • @5proutS That squeaking would drive me nuts too. Like you lived next door, and you hear the squeaking: 'he's pushing that thing around again'

  • can it turn? does it make espresso?

  • not an american invention...haha!

  • well, only 10% of the engineers in the world are American

  • not even 10% are you stupid?

look at the population of the rest of the world -.-"

  • they'd make a killing if they threw a couple of seats on it and set it on a windy beach.

  • @badmattitude666 they sure would making quite a literal killing considering it doesn't look like it has any steering :P

  • これは究極のナンセンスマシーン?

    それとも、映画に出てくる奇怪な古代の新兵器?

    加工精度が高いことだけはよくわかる。

    ベースとなる概念はシリンダーエンジン?

  • pure moving art.i love it!

just the stereotypical ultra-geeky dutch voice of the cameraman made me cringe a bit

  • aren't these supposed to be wind powered?

  • Needs WD 40

  • good for training!!! wonderful excercise machinenn

  • Problem is i dont think it will climb on hills

  • I have a question, why is it called transport, it is not carrying any items?

  • astonishing mate add a motor and it would be a great display a the maker fair

  • useless.. omg... if you think this is useless ... all of the "necessary" stuff we have in the rich west is useless. Only food+water isn't if you look at it that way. All music is useless too in your opinion am i right?

  • lol yeah, A/C, jewelry, even clothing at times can be useless. i think a better word would be impractical. i mean about 100 something years ago the airplane was even useless even before that

  • @plasmabol Stop leaving fucking stupid comments, the 13 people who agreed with you are just as dumb

  • trust me,, it will not be useless in a future without gasoline

  • Sweet but he need some lubrication :P

  • he should have put a motor on the end and rowed on it

  • hey look at this big awesome thing it took me months to build. now all i have to do is push it.

  • smeerlap

  • can they go in other directions other than a straight line?

  • woooow :D

  • his ears must've hurt from the squeaks

  • Amazing !

  • He MUST of had a lego set when he was young!

  • I want one!!!!! xD cool

  • make one, it's easy.

  • heel mooi

  • This is like the little brother of Optimus Prime

  • Wow Superman

  • cool

  • that looked backbreaking

  • a little WD-40, a lot of feathers, and a motor would make this thing really FUCKING cool!

  • I'd drive it!

  • have you seen his other work? its wind powered

  • lol imagine in the future driving those when all the gas is gone. "this just in, theirs seems to be a rhinocerous crash on highway 89. its seems as if 2 rhinos collided into each other at a fast pace of 1.5 miles per hour"

  • He says he is making a means of transport more efficient than the wheel yet look what the 'feet' have on them =0 lol

  • dunno about more efficient, but a HELL of a lot cooler =D

  • If I was the developer of this, despite the whole idea of it being wind powered, I would stick some computer controlled motors on it and then, then, just maybe, I could rule the world :D

  • LOL you are right

  • jaaah tis een heel mooie dag :P

  • Actually it's more than just art, he's been trying to get his design perfected for actually transporting good more efficiently than the wheel will :]

  • my only question would be... how would they turn? all the legs work on one axle, the only way it could turn would be to have 2 manually/computer controlled axles running in different directions to create a pivot. which will then do away with the wind power. shame to be honest, they're lovely machines

  • fantastic as it is,as art and engineering

but it would be very tempting to attach a seat, motor and steering wheel, and take that bad bwoy out for a spin!

  • yes but how do you make turns?

  • Így kéne egy biciglit csinálni nagyon állati lenne!!!

  • I would like to have seen it bulldoze that car.

  • I would like to have seen it mounted with machinegun-armed monkeys :(

    That would be awesome!

  • Lol. Definately would have been better than just bulldozing that car!!

  • LOL hahahaha

  • It doesn't need to have a motor it is completely wind powered

  • is that for transformer?

  • Holy crap... they should really motorize that thing.

  • It's supposed to be powered by the wind.

  • No, it's powered by the power of Love!... That's why it doesn't move very fast actually.

  • ART... just for ART (watch BMW advertisement)

  • i fail to see the 'transport' part

should rename it animaris rhinoceros heavy piece of shit

  • jea.. ofcourse.. what else.. they had to be dutch...

    dutch people rule

    nederland ftw

  • idd nederland for life

  • u need some WD-40 guy

  • wow very smart

  • Das ist komish ! Mankind is specialized in useless marvelous creations

  • That's awesome! How well does it turn though?

  • I wonder how this guy's works handle curbs.

  • that wud be ace with an engine powering it

  • wauw, wat een ongelofelijk briljant project, je zou denken dat hier een heel team van mensen aan gewerkt heeft. Zo super bedacht! Echt complimenten!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! groeten van een kunstacademiestudente.

  • cool..doing for a instant noodle ads, its not gonna work..

  • And guys from the rest of the world don't smoke enough lol

  • Ya hes the one transporting it

  • i still think wheels would work better

  • This thing looks like it would be more easy to move then a two ton truck. As it ways 2 tons itself.

  • NOW WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO WITH IT?

  • good for film effects

  • cool really cool Orz

  • omg! this is really it!

i saw this thing featured in some ad on german TV some hours ago!

  • :-D

  • i'd like to download a better quality version of this. Where did you get it from originally?

  • i don't remember, but probably from eMule

  • Holy fuck that would take a ridiculously long time to make
