What substance are they being grown in? I'm doing a science fair project like this and this would be a great visual!

the roots weren't grown in anything particular while shooting this video. They were taken out of their soil and held in perpendicular position in the plastic chamber with play dough as seen in the video. The camera was programmed to take still pictures every 3 mins for a period of 2 days.

sorry, i wasn't clear with my answer.
The plants weren't growing in anything. This was a clear plastic case that the roots were mounted to with plasticine.

What would happen then if you tried to grow a plant in an anti-gravity chamber or something? Would the plant like blow up?
