"which embouchure I'm using at the moment"!! Thats funny Dan coming from my perspective. I'm a complete beginner for blues, 'have no idea, but would you believe I've been playing the chromatic on and off for 50 years but only lately started playing the harp when I could hear properly for the first time with the aid of modern science. Thanks again and again Dan
@Levatron I'm glad you're in a better place to play music. It's a lifelong thing. I'm currently struggling to do a type of shake where you just move your tongue back and forth. I'm struggling, for sure.
@2100abhishek no, either or. Shakes are all in one direction. The most common ones are 3-4 draw and 4-5 draw. You can do them on the blow (I can't remember if it's 3-4, 4-5 or both) as well, but don't overdo them. Also can do a sweet 1st position blow shake (again I can't remember if it's 7-8 or 8-9).
Shaking head is great when you play another instrument at the same time (guitar) and using a harmonica-stand. Your hands are occupied and you can only shake your head. :) Doing the two-hole shake is faster when done with hands (hands are more flexible than the neck).
@lieblicherherrfrosch if it's a different type of harmonica, yes it will be very different to play. Basic techniques apply to any harmonica, but notes are arranged differently for different harmonica types.
i just started playing harp about a year and a half ago. i can play single notes and bends and am working on different licks. im a guitar player since 10 and im 26 years old. love the Blues!!! your videos are great! well rounded and really helpful. just wanted to show appreciation. good luck everyone!!!
@buggernuts100 "draw" = suck air in. However, I never tell people to "suck" because that usually leads to poor technique. You want to draw the air through, not suck it.
i hate you dan !!!...not really lol..its funny how you can screw a note up and still make it sound so damm good !!...Dan....you ARE the man !!!!.. thanks for taking the time to show us all
hi, i want to learn how to play my harmonic, mines can play it for both sides.. i hope you can show me how! thanks for be a really good teacher and sorry for my English, I'm from Costa Rica and we don't speak in English here!!!
The most commonly used shakes are 4-5 draw and 3-4 draw. you can do a little bit on 4-5 blow (listen to whammer jammer) but it's mostly draw. In first position, 7-8blow is really cool. (trouble in mind off of the big walter w/ carey bell record)
yeah, just make sure you go the right way. If band is in "C" Then, C,D, E, F, G, A = 1,2,3,4,5,6. You go up a 4th and pick up ur "F" harp. The 2D on F harp = C. Viola, second position. If you start with a harmonica, and want to figure out what key you can play second position over, go a 5th. Say you have an "F" harp. F,G, A, Bb, C. You can play second position over music in "C" 2D on a "F" harp =C. or just memorize it. ha ha ha
1st position = playing the same key harmonica as the key the music is in. So, A Harp over band in A. Most blues harp you hear is played in second position. That's using a harmonica that's one step away on the circle of 5ths. For ex. you play a D harp over band in A.
unless your teacher is shitty, I would keep your teacher. There's nothing like one-on-one music lessons. Your teacher is right there to give you personalized lessons and to coach you on your mistakes and give you advice. Videos are static. Live lessons are dynamic. Dynamic is better for learning music. Ha ha, playing and driving, a bit dangerous in the city - and illegal;) Try playing a Strat and driving, now there´s a challenge! I think I´ll stick to "shakes", and moving the harp is much faster anyway. Thanks for all the classes - your band sounds great by the way. Cheers!
