This is cool. As a Beefheart fan, I've known about Mallard for years, but I've never actually heard them before. If I close my eyes and listen to the raspy vocals and the twangy guitar, I might think that I am listening to a slightly twisted version of Dire Straits. Thanks for posting!
This is great. But I think the problem was this music was basically 1967 in 1977. That's not a bad thing, but it is an impossible thing to sell after a decade. As it was prog and pre-punk garage rock was on its last hurrah in these years (as a popular music form) and Beefheart himself was more critically than popularly lauded.
oh cmon, here too??? i know you all are proud that you can say beefheart is your favorite musician... but what if one day you actually start wanting to listen some other music... would you rather listen to some 3-chord bands, or at least the roots of the most legendary band ever... there isn't that many good music out there, to be a fucking music snob
@FraterSoddi Yeh, and maybe the Magic band wern't Magic without Beefheart. To put it another way: any talented musician could play this music but no one else could play trout mask replica.
Thanks for posting, it's nice to see & hear this great band, i thought they were lost forever out into the ether. in the same vein as little feat, but their own style.
Wow, Zoot and Rockette eh? Just too cool fer school! Awesome stuff - thanks so much for this. Incidentally, just looking at Rockette playing I hadn't realised how similar he and Roy Estrada are in phrasing and stage presence
No, Rockette Morton is Mark Boston, and Roy Estrada is Orejon. In the early seventies they played live gigs together in a two-bass version of The Magic Band
I thought the only footage of Mallard existed as a memory of seeing them at the Roundhouse in London. Thanks for uploading this. A much underrated band.
All these Mallard cuts are stone classics in my book. Top notch playing/singing, and the sheer quality of the material is noteworthy 30+ years down the line.
Been waiting a long time to see if something would surface from these guys. Thanks for the videos. Sound quality isn't brilliant but hugely appreciated just the same. Check out their Albums

Mallard has some great songs. You can find their albums floating around the net somewhere. A band that deserves more success than they received.

Sounds cool to me. I think the band had the write to sound a bit Beefheart: they turned his piano banging and whistling into true musical form.

Mark Boston, plays impossible chords + time changes
no body has touched his playing yet.he pumps it OUT !
except of course: Roy Estrada great voice ,great bass player, survived the Mothers, he is the pride of la raza
All of Beefhearts players were monster players except the
the "Unconditionally Guranteed" band...not my fave
