I had this on a tape from the Bognor weekender (first weekender venue one after Showstoppers left Caister I think) radio station (1986) think it was played by either Robbie Vincent or Froggy on that tape. And this isn't Northern soul - as someone said its disco-funk.
dunno what class u wanna put it in but its a true rare groove from my teen years.... thanx for the upload.... (im 50.. so id have been a v young teenager : )
Jim Heb Soul, thanks for posting this on here. It sounds like it coukld've been sampled in an independent Martial Arts flick possibly starring Bruce Li.
@mrpower328 No it didn't. It came out in 1974 and they had already started using the term. But who cares? It's still a disco track. Definitely not "Northern Soul" as it says above.
I had 15 seconds of this song on a recording of Greg Edwards (London DJ)Soul Spectrum I was15 years old at the time 1975 years later I heard the horn bit again.Last week I found out what record the sample was on S Exprees Theme From S Express and hey presto I now know what the cool original is thanks to the internet.Funk I believe.
This was my favorite song in 5th grade; I actually went and bought it with my own money---the 45 single that is! However, over the years I had forgotten the name of the artist* Thanks!
Froggy was the first to mix 2 copies back to back on his world famous Sound System at The Royalty in Southgate London, the crowd when't mental. Still sounds the bizzness if you get to hear it played out :-)
Yeah, I remember it from 1974, at Maestros disco in Glasgow, Scotland. The DJ there always played some exotic tracks, another one I remember was Wild Safari by Barrabas (see elsewhere on You Tube). Both sound fantastic over a really beefy sound system. Those were the days!
Like Isaac Hayes' "Disco Connection", this is properly disco-funk, and far funkier than even many of those contemporary Blackpool Mecca spins that upset some of the more sensitive flowers on the "traditional" Northern scene! However, and as usual, they wanted to have their cake and eat it, so when the odd new disco side became popular they called 'em "Northern Soul" to spare themselves any further embarrassment.
This is funk pure and simple! this was playing in the West Hampstead Birds nest..along with BT Express,Loni Liston Smith..i know i was there!! one of the few orignal jazz funkers...
Wow ! U remember the Bird's Nest at Muswell Hill ????
I'm findin it hard to find anyone who does !
I remember it so well. Remember wearin my cream fitted bowlin shirt (with 2 dark pleats at the bak !) and hustin away to trax like "Express" & Hamilton Bohannon's "South African Man".
@bootsamou wow....i never go to go birds nest coz of older siblings tormenting me.seemed like they had so much fun.hammersmith palis,electic ballroom was all i got the tail end of.i would love to recreate a book/film of the london soul/jazzfunk sceen not like 'young soul rebles' : {
i have to disagree with those guys who say this track isnt northern,i used to spin this at all nighters back in the day...but i must add it was only one for those who liked their northern commercial...like salsoul, maxine nightingale, tavares etc etc.check out another track,v v rare by the alfie khan orchestra...law of the land xx tiger
Penguin Villa classic! Merrick & Baisley blvds. I was too young to be there @ 14, but always managed to sneak in. Southside Queens when you could party!
@pookeyblow gets right up my arse people that refer to any old soul or motown as 'Northern' gah !!! ... Northern Soul wasn't invented until 1973 or thereabouts and if you wanna split hairs this is funky disco or vice versa :P
sounds better on acid (oh i forgot we usually were by the time this came on in the clubs in philly) also the played it back to back for a LONG time...they weren't called "discos" yet but you could only hear this kind of music in the gay clubs
@dirtyedna thats not true it came out in 1974 and there were disco charts, disco records and disco was already a craze that year - ie got big very quickly and in Europe the term disco went back even earlier. Oh and in 1974 they defintely weren't all gay clubs.
@ancientraver19881989 ...yeah, well most of this obscure stuff DID break FIRST in the "underground" gay clubs in the city (NYC/ Sanctuary,Loft, etc.) Disco was not a "craze" yet...it was mostly all R&B and funk or anything else we could dance to.If you want charts read Vince Aletti "the disco files-1973-78. Can't speak for Europe, although from what I hear they're light years ahead of US now (NYC is horrible now).
I bought the record back in 1975 it is on the Phillips record label, I came across another one on the same label last year, so I now have 2 in my collection.

it's funk, not disco, or northern soul :.)
gallen5042 10 months ago
@gallen5042 No, it's not pure funk at all. It has a disco beat and strings so it's definitely disco. You might wanna call it disco-funk.
