I had 2 of these wonderful toys! I could spend hours imagining I was either fighting the Cylons or the Imperial Fleet. Cannot remember who I traded themwith or what for but woe is me, woe is me! LOL
I had this as a kid and would pretend i was in outerspace with it, Now that i'm older i fly in space for real battling aliens with my ray gun and army of marshmellow people.
I remember playing with this alot. I always did the "fighter ship" with the just bridge plus the rear thruster attached to it. It used to be the "biggest" toy I ever had. Well now, its looks small in adult hands.
I had this ship, was awesome. Found it this weekend, unfortunately it was completely ruined. I had that green flying car also, what were those called?
As if the noise wasn't annoying enough, I put a phone jack on mine and plugged it into my stereo (HUGE RCA console, circa 1967). Gave my parents a new reason to yell "Turn that S##T down!!!
Wow. I forgot how annoying the SFX were! Man, I must have really bugged my parents. That was one awesome toy. It went perfectly with the dollar store 1/48 space men sets my mom would get me.
I have this very same type of Star Bird. I almost threw it away years ago, then I almost gave it to my son, who would have wrecked it. I did not realize it could be a collectors' item
Wow I don't think we had the Star Bird but I had (and still have!) the green tank think shown at the start of the video. The one with the turret mounted gun which swivels around. It's part metal, part plastic and quite heavy compared to similar toys today!
Not sure if the tank came with the Star Bird range or you just displayed it here cos it's similar? :)
Still got a working Star Bird, no box and a few bits missing but complete awesome times were had my me and my bro with these, thanks to a very loving Mum and Dad who despite having hardly a pot to piss in, always made Xmas a special time
@whitestar14 I LOVE it when parents throw away things of thier children and find out later it was real treasure. You can't find a complete one anymore.
Oh man, I had this and the command base too. I loved that the rear tail fins would detach and they were these little support fighters. The front would detach (kinda like the saucer section on the Enterprise) and that could be it's own separate ship, and that would also come apart as a little hand phaser toy! Genius!
I wish I knew there this toy went. Mom probably tossed it out when I got older. :-(
The laser sounds were cool, but this video does not include them.
As a kid I found the engine sounds really annoying and the laser sounds really great, but you could not have one without the other. I usually played with mine turned off so the engine sounds would be off, but I had to switch it on to fire the guns. I thought it was a nice looking starship design. The engine noise was unnecessary as well as annoying and illogical if you think about it.
You can imagine dad just gettin in from work, tired and pissed off! The last thing dad needs is that fuckin noisy racket! Ha ha! "will you SWITCH that fuckin thing off!!!!!"
i wanted this sooo bad but never got it. then i imagined putting it up against the intruder version which i never got either. but unlike kids today i used my imagination.
I had a similar model in the early 80s called "something Intruder".All black, made the same sounds and could be slid apart and be used as a laser gun thingy. It also came with a reflective cardboard radar base that you could shot at.Once in a while I would register a hit.My mother hid it from me due to it being too loud.I never saw it again.
Milton Bradley and Kenner made the coolest toys back in the day. I had the Star Bird along with the Avenger and the base. When time travel is invented, I'm going back to the 70's and 80's and picking all of my favorite cool toys!
My buddys & I shot this up with BB gun hooking it up on sting line. It was amazing that we did not shoot each other or lose & eye. In the 70's kids could be kids. Thanks for flash back!
I have to say, I was somewhat disappointed by the toys during the 80's. We had Star-Wars telling us what 'computers' were going to do, but yet apart from BigTrack et al there weren't any computers doing anything of the sort. Even the toys were all imagination based like the SB above, nothing like the kids have had for the last 20 years or so, the closest to this I got was 'Merlin' or Atari2600, oh to have had an iphone, xbox playstation back then :)
@tempac You think that kids today have so good??Really??Any kid today is now lacking any real imagination since everything is so instant and ready to play with.Nah man,we had it way better cause we the '80's generation are the ones running PIXAR ANIMATION STUDIOS and others that need individuals with some real imaginations. We have it better man, trust me dude!I was born in 1979,so I know what I'm saying! Please reply!
@medievalfantasy No, it isn't. The Avenger had smaller main LEDs closer together to make room for the IR detectors that were there to register a hit... It also had Avenger written on the side...
@Labruskie Either way, it's not the original release with light gray pieces. Those are Avenger interceptors and cannon/hover pieces. Like Napoleon Dynamite, someone's mixing and matching.
I remember my older brother having one of those back in 1980 when we lived at Hickam AFB in Hawaii. He wouldn't let me play with his toy. One day I was home sick and he had to go to school, I plunged it in the bathtub! He also had a BigTrack that he wouldn't let me play with. Dad felt sorry that I ruined his StarBird so he bought him a bigwheel. I took his BigTrack and programed it to run off the pier in to the ocean!
I always got scared that mine would overload if I ran it up too high...LOL. I got over it eventually, though. This was a rockin' toy! Wish I knew what I did with mine.
That's the 2nd version of Star Bird (Avenger)I think, different stickers, and of course the big difference is that it had the extra infrared (I think) emiter and recever, so it could fight with the smaller Intruder ,if hit it made the engine noises cut out.
I've got the original Star Bird, and the Intruder,
ah happy days..
and yes , they were damn loud!, probably prompting more than one "give it a rest" on xmas day :)
The StarBird was one of those toys I was after as a kid and was extremely jealous of a friend who had it. But I did have that car on the right the K-2002 Flight Hunter.
This was THEEE toy to get. Got mine at a store then called The Treasury, the whole front came off including the fins, and a button could be pressed for laser sounds. I was about 10, 11.
I have mine still, the front pod comes off and transforms into a smaller ship and the black tips on the wings turn into recon ships. when the two ships battle you can kill the other ship, awesome toys better than video games I'm going to get batteries now
I had one like this, my one of my mates at school had the other one the black (and red was it?) version. Havent seen one in sooooooooooooooooooooooooooo long.
That was great! I can't tell you how many hours of my childhood was spent with that toy! My friend even had the launch base that Milton Bradley sold to go with the Star Bird, but I could never afford that!
I never did like the little fighters on the wings though, and kept them off. I liked to imagine the Star Bird as a MUCH larger star ship, similar in size to Enterprise or Battlestar Galactica. Lots of decks, etc... The fighters on the wings ruined that perspective.
Does anyone know what the other two toys are? Had those as well and had completely forgotten about them until I saw the video! Made me smile.
