Mike, Larry Carlton notified me on my FB. I thinlk Larry and his son compliment each other as guitar musicians. I love their music they are incrediabler!!1
The changes in this tune are pretty boring. I do dig hearing Robben's fist solo come in, just to hear such a pure LesPaul tone. NIe how the pianist gives it the Herbie touch in his runs..opening it up as much as can be done with these chords.
I've uploaded a live concert of Robben today...March 29 2011...still processing as I ramble...1080p always takes more time...
This is wonderful !!!!!!!!!!!! Robben and Larry make a great combination. I assume that they are connected from a past life or lifetimes etc. Thanks for posting.
Toss played on some of the Kevin Gilbert live projects back in the early 90's as well. The Live CD of Kevin touring Toy Matinee (with Sheryl Crow on Keys - Blech) as well. He smokes.
Of course, sadly, neither one of these guitar wizards made it on Rolling Stone Magazines 100 Best Guitarists of All Time, which speaks ill of the RS. Ironically RS early claimed Carlton's solo on Steely Dan's Kid Charmegne was the third best solo of all time. Go figure...
@JoeGancher Couldn't agree more- that lists a joke and a sheer article of disrespect to the music community as a whole. The fact that Joni Mitchell beat out Trey, Derek Trucks, David Gilmour, Toni Iommi and Randy Rhoads as well as Joan Jett slotting in before Angus Young and Robert Randolph, speaks worlds about the ineptitude and lack of musical knowledge on RS' behalf in making these selections. Maybe if it was an index of the most popular guitarists theyd have some credibility...
@JoeGancher thats because RS would rather put a popular player that is shit on the cover than a less(er) known talented player. And I agree with momofox. Trey Anastasio should be in at least top 20 players along with Jimmy Herring, Both Frank and Dweezil Zappa, David Gilmour as well as plenty of other players who dont get enough credit for their true guitar skills. Not ability to bring in a bigger or louder audience. Im sure in less than two years the Jonas bros will be in the top guitar players
@funkingtonfunk forget skills it would be like comparing Van Goh to David Beckham. It's just to vastly different styles. Only ignorant people say "he is better than this guy... or that guy..."
No one schools Larry! Larry is the best their is baby...no one touches his brilliance!!
Go ahead and try, no dice no way nobody can even come close to Larry! Yes Robben is good and brilliant in his own right, but c'mon, Larry rules flat out!
Robben really plays some incredible stuff over this tune, but Larry wrote it!! His solo on the original recording is out of this world, I don't know why he's so timid here
@giordashio That would be Jeff Babko —Jeff was one of those young phenoms that studied at California Institute of the Arts while in high school —He was, also, the keyboardist and arranger at ABC-TV "Jimmy Kimmel Live"...
@giordashio: The guy on keys is the mighty Jeff Babko.
He plays with Simon Phillips, James Tylor, Michael Landau, Andy Timmons, Allen Hinds, the Jimmy Kimmel show... you name it. I don't think I saw any other pianist like him! My all time fave since Hiromi Uehara, for sure :)
Larry was shot in the neck in his yard he went through a lot of pain I dont think this case was ever solved if any body has any information on this case e mail me i can put three private invesigators on the case .
It is indeed a '57. It is larrys. From what I understand, he loaned it to Robben for a while but he gave it back because he didn't feel comfortable having someones guitar that was worth that much money..
In the '70's LC had his 335 fitted with a brass nut and bridge, then played through the first "pre-amp" amp (Mesa Boogie). He created sustain previous players only dreamed of. That sound defined MOR jazz/rock guitar for 20 years.
He was called "triple-scale Carlton" because he was on every pop album and TV score for 15 years. Sessions he couldn't make were covered by those who could sound like him.
Toss Panos, saw him playing with Robben a couple of years ago. He rocks. Also plays in Larry's band. In fact Larry pretty much shares bands with Robben. Travis Carlton plays in both bands also.
@chiefmojorising1 I believe that's Toss Panos —Toss has played with lots of folks —The Keyboardist here, Jeff Babko features Toss on his release —"Broject" —Toss, in the past, also played a stint with Kevin Gilbert in Toy Matinee...
I have loved Carlton since his Crusaders days, but I have to say that, while he may play "out on a limb" most if not all the time, he is technically not where he was at one time. Extra clean tone allows us to hear every small flub, but he is not quite where he was at one time, IMO. Robben, on the other hand, is playing as well as he ever has. He is a GREAT jazz guy for someone who now prefers blues-based pieces, in general. Robben will goof on occasion, but moves on with aplomb and a smile.
....To Robben's credit, he has left small flubs on his records over the years, indicating to me that he realizes that he is still slightly human. Killer players all, killer rhythm section, great tune (Carlton's, I believe) & two GREAT guitarists! Great post!
When they are soloing seems like both are kind of rythmically lost. I mean, sure they aren't, but I feel like they don't find the flow to connect phrases each other... seems like they are thinking about what to do next instead of being free.
Beautiful........two supremely musical players who are masters of their instruments. And that Greek God Toss Panos on drums...man, you guys got it all goin' on. Smokin!
All of this only better and more is on the "Larry Carlton Live in Tokyo" CD. Buy it, you'll like it. Larry is on the left channel and Robben on the right. Some of the best Robben Ford recorded in a long time.
Two incredible jazz/fusion players gifting us with their abilities and phrasing. Every guitar player that enjoys melody and styled lead expression could learn something from these guys!!
my god, they know exactly what theyre doing aswell, when i play i play any chromatic passing notes mo a basic scale (altho apparently im using dorian?) nevertheless, it takes serious skill to do that. Awesome players
Nice tune, Robben sounds great. Larry was cool too but I think he could have boosted his solo to overdrive like in the recording. It would have given a greater impact I think. Just my opinion.
someone's been listening to too much metal...well-studied musicians avoid playing perfect 8th and 16th notes for a reason, it's called rhythmic variation
I like a lot both guitarists, and saw RF 2 times in concert, but here you have to admit that LC fucked up totally his solo this time. RF is as good as he's always, plus with a classier guitare (old goldtop LP) than his usual blond tele or sunburst Esprit, to my modest opinion.
I love Larry Carlton. One of my favorite players and composers...but sometimes I feel as if his soloing doesn't match his great songs. I've seen some really good solos but others....

no because it sounds like someone is squeezing stings balls when he sings, i hate him too.there are many greater people out there but guys like this just got lucky.

you are the idiot. Tos Pannos plays with some of the greatest musicians in LA if you could smoke him what are you doing sitting around e-bashing? Shouldn't you be playing with sting?

geetarnut,it's not all in the wrists you idiot it's how you bounce the stick take a look at how steve gadd plays and you'll think twice about saying it's all in the wrists it's all about the soul, this guy pannos sucks i can't even believe he is up the with these guys why did they pick him. personnally i can blow him away and i'm not even famous.

Is that why he's one of the most in demand players in the west coast and you're here e-bashing???

Love the keyboarding.
Yeah, I think Robben took this one.
I liked his tone better too.
On the srudio version Larry had a more soaring but smooth distortion. Could have used more drive on his tone.

I think the keyboard took this one. However, i dislike his Rhodes-tone.
