  • I love how Robben stuffs up the melody at 1:38 and Larry smiles

  • Larry and Robben were great as usual but how about Babko? Wow!!!

  • "spain" at 4:50

  • @Guitar4blues what do you mean ?

  • Mike, Larry Carlton notified me on my FB. I thinlk Larry and his son compliment each other as guitar musicians. I love their music they are incrediabler!!1

  • @Sixstrings, Thanx for the info!!!! Does Travis Calton play with Larry often?????

  • @nefferteri2 I think he is full time with Dad these days when Larry tours.

  • WoW!! Larry's son is a great bass player!! I am a bass player too. What is his name?

  • @nefferteri2 Travis Carlton.

  • 56 or 57 Les Paul gold top........Sweet !!!

  • Bravo.

  • what a groovy bassist..!!!

  • Who is the guy on bass guitar???? I think he is very talented.

  • @nefferteri2 That is Larry's son.

  • Could you please give me this song's name?

  • @MrAmitGendelman RIO SAMBA

  • The changes in this tune are pretty boring. I do dig hearing Robben's fist solo come in, just to hear such a pure LesPaul tone. NIe how the pianist gives it the Herbie touch in his runs..opening it up as much as can be done with these chords.

I've uploaded a live concert of Robben today...March 29 2011...still processing as I ramble...1080p always takes more time...

  • @sclogse1 Pure Les Paul tone is right! Doesn't hurt that he's running through that Dumble, either!

  • andyobryan22yesgutarmomdad

  • Jeff Babko on keys killing it.

  • DUMBLE AMPS!!!!

  • Ford looks like someone's elderly aunt

  • @flowerdrop1 lol

  • really wonderful ! stupendo !

  • really wonderful ! stupendo !

  • that les paul tone! the best!!!!!!!!!!!!! sick solo from robben

  • that les paul tone! the best!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • The drummer I think is Tos Panos...

  • Is the Dennis Chambers In the bass Kkkk...

  • @EvandroOJuniOor No! Its Larrys son. Really.

  • @xylfox I know it's not the Chambers was just a joke rsrs.., but did not know the name bassist. Thanks!

  • They ALL kick some serious ass !! PERIOD !! ALL !!

  • This is wonderful !!!!!!!!!!!! Robben and Larry make a great combination. I assume that they are connected from a past life or lifetimes etc. Thanks for posting.

  • Toss played on some of the Kevin Gilbert live projects back in the early 90's as well. The Live CD of Kevin touring Toy Matinee (with Sheryl Crow on Keys - Blech) as well. He smokes.

  • @turok0404 ever took vacations in your life? if you tour with people for years, the last thing you may wanna do is have them along all the time

  • That is Larry Carltons LP Ford is playin

  • Robben's tone on this is beautiful :')

  • I want that Gold Top

  • Of course, sadly, neither one of these guitar wizards made it on Rolling Stone Magazines 100 Best Guitarists of All Time, which speaks ill of the RS. Ironically RS early claimed Carlton's solo on Steely Dan's Kid Charmegne was the third best solo of all time. Go figure...

  • @JoeGancher Couldn't agree more- that lists a joke and a sheer article of disrespect to the music community as a whole. The fact that Joni Mitchell beat out Trey, Derek Trucks, David Gilmour, Toni Iommi and Randy Rhoads as well as Joan Jett slotting in before Angus Young and Robert Randolph, speaks worlds about the ineptitude and lack of musical knowledge on RS' behalf in making these selections. Maybe if it was an index of the most popular guitarists theyd have some credibility...

  • @momofox Who the fuck is the "Rolling Stone"? We have the Internet!

  • @JoeGancher thats because RS would rather put a popular player that is shit on the cover than a less(er) known talented player. And I agree with momofox. Trey Anastasio should be in at least top 20 players along with Jimmy Herring, Both Frank and Dweezil Zappa, David Gilmour as well as plenty of other players who dont get enough credit for their true guitar skills. Not ability to bring in a bigger or louder audience. Im sure in less than two years the Jonas bros will be in the top guitar players

  • @JoeGancher rolling stone magazine has been the dregs since at least 1980. I haven't read one in 10 years. Jann Wenner = putz

  • @Vstrat0 You can't judge a magazine you haven't read in a decade

  • @ibanezbloke true. maybe I should get one and see if they have improved?

  • Epic! Bet Robben stole some chops while he was there. Love em both. First time I've seen Ford outside the blues stuff.

  • If someone dares to try and compare these guys to Vai and Satch I'll come find where you live and snap you, these guys are untouchable!

  • @funkingtonfunk forget skills it would be like comparing Van Goh to David Beckham. It's just to vastly different styles. Only ignorant people say "he is better than this guy... or that guy..."

  • @JD0x0 oh i completely agree mate, I just really hate it when shred heads try and compare these old greats to like Gilbert, Satch and Vai etc

  • No one schools Larry! Larry is the best their is baby...no one touches his brilliance!!

Go ahead and try, no dice no way nobody can even come close to Larry! Yes Robben is good and brilliant in his own right, but c'mon, Larry rules flat out!

  • @squonkdh Thats it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Robben really plays some incredible stuff over this tune, but Larry wrote it!! His solo on the original recording is out of this world, I don't know why he's so timid here

  • @primarydominant Carlton has always been this way all the way back to the 70's!

  • I was actually more amazed by the drummer, he's yeah, good...

  • wow, great clip...now i am really excited to see them play in boulder, colorado on april 29th 2010

  • @fugotfromboulder - you lucky, lucky guy - I love Robben Ford but I'm over in England with the ash cloud. Doh! Enjoy it for me dude.

  • I'm sorry but Robben schools Larry on this one. And who is that dude on Rhodes?! He was rippin'!

  • @giordashio Unfortunately Larry doesn't quite seem to get in sync early in the solo...

  • @giordashio According to the japanese characters (ji-e-fu ba-bu-ko), it's Jeff Babko, who apparently plays or played for the Jimmy Kimmel show.

  • @giordashio Jeff Babko on keys

  • @giordashio That would be Jeff Babko —Jeff was one of those young phenoms that studied at California Institute of the Arts while in high school —He was, also, the keyboardist and arranger at ABC-TV "Jimmy Kimmel Live"...

  • Jeff Babko on keyboards, Toss Panos on drums

  • @giordashio: The guy on keys is the mighty Jeff Babko.

He plays with Simon Phillips, James Tylor, Michael Landau, Andy Timmons, Allen Hinds, the Jimmy Kimmel show... you name it. I don't think I saw any other pianist like him! My all time fave since Hiromi Uehara, for sure :)

  • Is that Dan Gottlieb on the drums?!?

  • Toss Panos is on drums

  • Why Do the video is not complet?

  • Jeff Babko on orgel and synthesizers!!

  • ALGUIEN TIENE LA TAB?? anyone have the tab?? que escala uso para improvisar?? what escala???? jajaja guitar pro???

  • Larry was shot in the neck in his yard he went through a lot of pain I dont think this case was ever solved if any body has any information on this case e mail me i can put three private invesigators on the case .

  • Just recently? That's so terrible. I hope he gets better.

  • No it was a long time ago he is better now .

  • robin has a 53 paul or 54 his own self

is that 335 narrow at the nut or does a duck have lips

  • It is indeed a '57. It is larrys. From what I understand, he loaned it to Robben for a while but he gave it back because he didn't feel comfortable having someones guitar that was worth that much money..

  • is that a 1957 les paul?

  • Also,

I heard these 2 when that first came together. At the Baked Potato in LA.

They both had the Mesa Boogies. Pops popwell on bass, Joe Sample on keys. maybe Guerin on skins? I was 6 feet away.

    I swooned.

Was it the scotch or the music?

  • In the '70's LC had his 335 fitted with a brass nut and bridge, then played through the first "pre-amp" amp (Mesa Boogie). He created sustain previous players only dreamed of. That sound defined MOR jazz/rock guitar for 20 years.

He was called "triple-scale Carlton" because he was on every pop album and TV score for 15 years. Sessions he couldn't make were covered by those who could sound like him.

  • Awesome guys on both solo and backing... I want 335!

  • amazing

  • Robben Ford's playing is just too fucking hot!!!

He rips it off like a genius... He really is one of the greatest in the blues/jazz genre!!!!

  • Ford sounds so much better when he plays a Les Paul

  • mmm cheesy hammond, I luv it :)

  • and that drummer is freakin wicked

  • @chiefmojorising1

Toss Panos, saw him playing with Robben a couple of years ago. He rocks. Also plays in Larry's band. In fact Larry pretty much shares bands with Robben. Travis Carlton plays in both bands also.

  • @chiefmojorising1 I believe that's Toss Panos —Toss has played with lots of folks —The Keyboardist here, Jeff Babko features Toss on his release —"Broject" —Toss, in the past, also played a stint with Kevin Gilbert in Toy Matinee...

  • Dude I"l have to say that was some of the headiest keyboard jamming that i've ever heard.

  • I'm a guitarist. but I have to say, the keyboardist was awesome x10!! He was gooood!!

  • I'm pretty certain it's Jeff Babko on keys. And yeah, he's awesome!

  • The Dumble Bros.

  • Who is the Drummer?

  • Tom Brechtline?

  • Ya, i'm pretty sure its not Brechtline

  • Toss Panos

  • I have loved Carlton since his Crusaders days, but I have to say that, while he may play "out on a limb" most if not all the time, he is technically not where he was at one time. Extra clean tone allows us to hear every small flub, but he is not quite where he was at one time, IMO. Robben, on the other hand, is playing as well as he ever has. He is a GREAT jazz guy for someone who now prefers blues-based pieces, in general. Robben will goof on occasion, but moves on with aplomb and a smile.

  • ....To Robben's credit, he has left small flubs on his records over the years, indicating to me that he realizes that he is still slightly human. Killer players all, killer rhythm section, great tune (Carlton's, I believe) & two GREAT guitarists! Great post!

  • I love the keyboard solo (and his own comping during the solo)

  • great guitar players!!!!!

  • very good . but it looks so far to be a Samba...

  • Beautiful.............

  • This is amazing! Two of the greatest guitarist together in one stage! I love the feel and groove! Bravo!

  • Musical equivalent of a beige suit and matching shoes.

  • i agree fully the bass and drums are the best ever here, imso amazed, listen to put it where you want it. are these guys ever stateside?

  • Samba All da Way

  • Great drums and bass guys

  • When they are soloing seems like both are kind of rythmically lost. I mean, sure they aren't, but I feel like they don't find the flow to connect phrases each other... seems like they are thinking about what to do next instead of being free.

  • Larry Carlton seemed free to me in his solo.

  • There is only one word to describe it.. wonderful

  • Beautiful........two supremely musical players who are masters of their instruments. And that Greek God Toss Panos on drums...man, you guys got it all goin' on. Smokin!

  • Almost too smooth!

  • CHEEZY

  • ...Today in Denver we will see a high of 78 with a relatively low humidity index..."

    HAHA.

  • very good.. but is this SAMBA?

  • All of this only better and more is on the "Larry Carlton Live in Tokyo" CD. Buy it, you'll like it. Larry is on the left channel and Robben on the right. Some of the best Robben Ford recorded in a long time.

  • Lol....Yeah...(like RIo Funk)...

  • Two incredible jazz/fusion players gifting us with their abilities and phrasing. Every guitar player that enjoys melody and styled lead expression could learn something from these guys!!

  • here.........here......agreed!

  • whats the name of the bass-man and the drummer? can some one tell me please?

  • the Bassist is Larrys son travis carlton drummer I cant remember

  • Larrys son...? wow...I like his sound!!

  • The Drummer is Tos Panos, saw him in SF in a 3 man show, great drummer, studio muscian

  • drummer is toss panos

  • Bass-Travis Carlton, Larry's son

    Drummer-Not sure-could be Porcaro,L.C.uses him a lot forever

  • porcaro what?!? he died almost 20 years ago!!!

  • Thanks for the verification-wasn't sure if it was

Porcaro or Terry Trotter we lost back then

  • Drummer is Tos Panos.

  • my god, they know exactly what theyre doing aswell, when i play i play any chromatic passing notes mo a basic scale (altho apparently im using dorian?) nevertheless, it takes serious skill to do that. Awesome players

  • magnifici

  • strepitosi

  • Robben seamlessly brings the blues into ever thing he plays. Wonderful musician. Do i need to say anything about Larry? No, I don't and you know why.

  • Well, jedepah said it best! Musician -69

  • What true masters who only get better with age like a fine friggin wine. I also like Robben as the villian in the first Dirty Harry movie..LOL

  • No Scorpio was played by Andy Robinson...

  • Wow!!! best Robben Ford solo i've heard since his solo on Joni Mitchell's verson of Woodstock

  • Nice tune, Robben sounds great. Larry was cool too but I think he could have boosted his solo to overdrive like in the recording. It would have given a greater impact I think. Just my opinion.

  • The 58 gold top is Larry's...

Buy the cd "Larry Carlton Live in Tokyo" it's great.

  • That Ford guy is completely playing his solo out of time.

  • Its called playin the pocket.

  • I suggest you listen harder, he playes where he wants to for a reason.

    Your comment only displays ignorance.

  • someone's been listening to too much metal...well-studied musicians avoid playing perfect 8th and 16th notes for a reason, it's called rhythmic variation

  • Agree! And...HELLO!!!- this is a SAMBA!!??

  • You are joking surely. "That Ford guy"? Mate go back to Foxtel and watch your BonJovi or whatever the fuck "in time" shit you think is music- wanker

  • I like a lot both guitarists, and saw RF 2 times in concert, but here you have to admit that LC fucked up totally his solo this time. RF is as good as he's always, plus with a classier guitare (old goldtop LP) than his usual blond tele or sunburst Esprit, to my modest opinion.

  • Who is the drummer?

  • Toss Panos

  • amazing,,,,,, Pure talent,,is all I can say

  • GREAT!

  • I love Larry Carlton. One of my favorite players and composers...but sometimes I feel as if his soloing doesn't match his great songs. I've seen some really good solos but others....

  • I was just giving an opinion dude. Good luck in life with that attitude.

  • spaghetti head! best insult ever!!

  • lol but I thought everyone liked spaghetti

  • I'm a huge Larry and Robben fan ,what a treat to having them play together.

  • I could watch this video a million times over and never get tired of it. Larry, Robben, the keyboard player-wish I knew his name, they are all very very incredible. I hope they decide to tour again because I want to see them.

  • I think the keyboard player is Terry Trotter.

  • ty strings :-)

  • According to the Japanese subtitle, the keyboard player is Jeff Babko.

  • Terry Trotter is older than this guy. Its not him, but this guy sounds like TT's.

  • the two greatest guitarists of all time in one stage. wow. does anyone know if they are still touring together?

  • I don't know ipso man, but if they tour near me, I am definitely going to be there :-)

  • All you super critics: Just get out there and tour and record and SHOW them how it supposed to be done! Just enjoy this...

  • you are the idiot. Tos Pannos plays with some of the greatest musicians in LA if you could smoke him what are you doing sitting around e-bashing? Shouldn't you be playing with sting?

  • i think they cant improv that well

  • Is that why he's one of the most in demand players in the west coast and you're here e-bashing???

  • Is this from a DVD? If so i'll be out looking for it o_o

  • che accoppiata vincente!

  • This is how music transcends!Makes a lots of fun!Just watch all their facial expressions!Larry,Robben and the rest of the band:thanks for making this world a bit easier!

  • what's the name of this tune?

  • rio samba, one of larry's, awesome

  • LOVE the interplay on the intro

  • Love the keyboarding.

Yeah, I think Robben took this one.

I liked his tone better too.

On the srudio version Larry had a more soaring but smooth distortion. Could have used more drive on his tone.

  • I think the keyboard took this one. However, i dislike his Rhodes-tone.

  • Detta är musik i världsklass , suveränt :)

  • i dont think the drummer and fat arsed bass player are tight enough, but the guitarin is cool
