  • This film has been forgotten as the protest film it really was. I helped kill our Space Program and crated a generation of anti-Technology Tree huggers running Hollywood for the next 50 years.

  • @Kapitananime And that's a bad thing in your mind, right?

  • He buries the guys body? He is in space, just dispose of him out of an airlock.

  • @HAMBURGER99100

Nah, it's a good compost contributor. The plants love to feed off dead whatevers. Lots of salts and minerals. Sugar, water. All perfect for a plant to enjoy.

  • @HAMBURGER99100 lol

  • I like all his patches on his uniform. I guess he must either have an onboard embroidery unit that produces them---perhaps for the sake of morale. Little awards to commemorate each phase of career or particular voyage.

  • how come this was his only big film? He's fantastic!

  • @ryko26 He actually has a pretty impressive list of television credits.

  • bruce is great in this.

  • im glad you all think so little of the human race, i will never give up on us, like you fatalists do. we are not destroying the planet like al gore, your buddy, says we are.

  • We can't give up on us. One day we will learn, do better and be all that humanity can be. Instead of waiting for the end, do something about it. Doom and gloomers don't impress me.

  • be not a cancer on the earth - leave room for nature - leave room for nature

  • It isn't matter of wether we'll destroy the planet...because we won't...now we might wipe ourselves from the face of it, but the Earth will get by just fine without us. I weep for our shortsighted species and hope that we can pull it out before it's too late.

  • Yes, the earth was doing just fine before the appearance of man and will do just fine after the passing of man....

  • That's true.... There is always hope but as I said.... the earth will do just fine with or without us. We need the earth. The earth doesn't need us. We are like fleas on a dog. Parasites really... to be honest. We've only been here for a very, tiny, tiny fraction of the earth's history. Let's hope we can all get along and survive long enough as a species to the see the next millennia. That in itself will be a great accomplishment.

  • i like to imagine that the earth was at this stage of evolution before. just think if there was a time in the past where humans were more advanced than us but got wiped out.

  • Atlantis? haha, I doubt anyone was more advanced then us overall, but perhaps in certain respects. Like the Mayan Calendar, they didn't even use wheels yet they had the most advanced calendar in the world.

  • @SilentRunningMovie As Bill Hicks said "We're a virus with shoes"

  • @MasterOhSo If there is enough life left, and in favourable-enough conditions, the planet may regenerate into something similar to what it was before we came along. My bet, however, is on desertification of the land base and lifeless toxic soup for the oceans.

  • Every year that goes by, we are one step closer to this movie coming true. Mankind is self-destructive. Look around. I'm an atheist, but I guess the book of Revelation was written by pretty smart people.

  • Revelation 11:18 "...and he will be bring to ruin those ruining the earth." God absolutely does care about the earth and how humans treat it. But he also promises not to let it be destroyed completely: Ecclesiastes 1:4 "A generation is coming and a generation is going but the earth is standing to time indefinite." I know you're an atheist, but since you brought up the apocolypse vs the environment, I thought you might appreciate these verses.

  • We can have trust that God will bring about his original purpose for the Earth. No one can change his purpose. The Earth will be a paradise. Those who do God's will according to 1 John 2:17 will live forever on the beautiful Earth. No disrespect for human rulership but only God's heavenly Government that we pray for in the Lords Prayer will bring about the necessary changes. The mess the world is in it is not much longer before our Creator brings an end to the wicked conditions. (Dan. 2:44)

  • That right, thats what I expect frm you "Rape the Earth! it dsn't matter! god will come and fix everything!"

You know, you have been saying "not much longer" for a long, LONG time... I don't know about you, but I'd rather try and fix the world MYSelf then waiting for some god to do it.

Afterall wouldn't your god, oh lets see, WANT you to keep HIS creation clean and sacred?

I mean tell me your thoughts here "Lets screw the world it doesn't matter" Very very god of you, jesus would be proud.

  • @Crossroadsinc Amen. Though I am Baptist. I do agree. Jesus would not be proud. God said in charge. Not wipe out and overpopulate. Man is the only species on earth that does not obey nature's ecosystem practice of perfect balance. In Africa, just enough lions exist, just enough cheetahs. etc. Man is clueless

  • @CaptainBuckRogers man is clueless or Emotionally Lazy to do the right things?

  • @Crossroadsinc The Earth is a sacred temple, and we treat it like a toilet

  • Did you know that this movie was written with Bruce Dern to play the hero from the very beginning. Even thou he had only played bit parts and bad guys up to this point.

  • Really, that's interesting considering he always played low-lifes like you said.

Besides the great special effects for 1972 the designs of the space craft, robots, etc where excellent!

  • @BUDDY6414724297 Believe it or not, Bruce Dern wasn't the first choice to play Freeman Lowell. Larry Hagman was. Lowell wasn't yet an environmentalist in that version of the script, either -- just a reclusive guy who did not want to go back to Earth, and depended on the domed forests for his food.

  • @racookster No, the part of Freeman Lowell was written for Bruce Dern. I would know. I worked on the film.

  • @racookster No, I wrote SILENT RUNNING and the part of Freeman Lowell was written for Bruce Dern. Ask Bruce Dern or Doug Trumbull if you don't believe me.

  • Crocodile tears.
