well, unfortunately when people post comments like that, there are some (stupid and ignorant) people who just dislike the video just to prove the comment wrong.
Thank you Syllerud! This is an interesting minor blues that has an unconvertional chromatic movement of parallel "m7 add 4, omit 5" (stacked 4ths) chords at bars 9 - 12 of the head. The composer's tenor sax solo is well constructed and deliciously played. He uses only a few motifs that are repeated in altered forms. A classic.

Eddie Lockjaw Davis also plays a Oliver Nelson arrangement of Stolen Moments on a c.d called Stolen Moments.Notice how Eric Dolphy plays more inside on flute, it called for the minor blues so it was played more traditional.
hey could some one tell me what the chord changes are during the solo. My Real book says c minor blues but I'm not sure what that means with the harmonies the keyboard and bass are laying down, thanks
@Syllerud AAAAAAActually. Just to be a bit more picky, these are the preferred changes for a minor blues which most of the masters play (Ray Brown, Miles, Coltrane, etc. with slight variation)
|Cm7|Cm7|Cm7|Cm7 C7alt|
|Fm7|Fm7 | Cm| A7#11| <----------This chord is super important and often overlooked. Listen to recordings...it's in there!
|Ab7|G alt| Cm7 Am7b5| Dm7 b5 G7|
These are the true minor blues changes in jazz. Good luck!
@guitarrahombre This song is based on the C dorian scale (C-minor with raised 6'th, 2nd mode of the major scale). Guess i would simply play C dorian, F dorian, and G altered scale. But c'mon misteredwino, give us some more ;)
@Syllerud Those scales work, but play the changes (chord tones)! Over the G7 alt play and F# major scale but just raise the root resulting in: G-G#-A#-B-C#-D#-E#-G!! you'll hit all of the extensions of G7 alt. with this scale. Once you play the scale tones in C minor, try playing chord tones a whole step up so you have C-Eb-G-Bb-D-F-A , which is a Cm13 chord! Do the same for Fm. Have fun! Peace
@guitarrahombre Check out my reply to syllerud. I like to play arpeggios over changes, and superimpose chord tones, but that's just my style, and you can hear the changes better in your soloing that way. There are so many scales you can play, but it's harder to sound good using scales because there are too many notes to choose from moment to moment. Stick with outlining the changes. You'll hear it! Peace
@misteredwino thanks for the advice I'd learnt that g super locrian scale a while ago but i didn't know what to use it for thats really cool to think of all the notes as the extensions
@misteredwino but that's a matter of taste, reason why i like to think of scales, aka. the modal approach to soloing (so what i.e.) is becaused you further away from the tonality and the chord changes, exploring the melodic possiblelities instead of flying up and down of the chord changes! But agian, that's a matter of taste? I'd prefer Bill Evans while another prefer Oscar peterson for this, like i'd prefer John Coltrane/Miles Davis modal music to Charlie Parker/Gillespie.
@Syllerud That's cool. I'm really into Kurt Rosenwinkel, but also Wes Montgomery. But I still take the harmonic approach to everything. That may be why I play about 3-7 gigs a week during peak season as well!! Scales just confuse me when I play. I like to make up my own scales when I play outside, and then resolve to the chord tones. Have fun with your jazz studies. I'm glad that you enjoy playing jazz like I do. Peace.

@tombokickass No, it's a C dominant 7th chord with a #11, b9, #9, b13, or some combination of those. Depends on what the chord player feels like, and what the soloist is playing!
@misteredwino so its C E G + extensions etc. - but a major 1 chord doesnt really make sense in a minor key? especially straight after a minor 1 chord? Or do you just sort of not play the third of the chord?
My God, I hope they leave this up. This is one of Oliver's finest compositions. I actually got turned onto this song when it came off the Dream Deferred Album in 1976, and it has never left my soul. " Stolen Moments " was a perfect title to this number. Close your eyes and it takes you to another realm.
@Longshotsblues 2:36 and on...seriously. It just sounds terrible to me. Is he playing like 1-4-5 arpeggios? It's not a 12 bar blues dude...whatever. I don't see any musicality in that section.
@samprobear Okay well it's a minor blues, whereas what I'm hearing is major 1-4-5 arpeggios. And the technical justification for the section isn't really what I'm going for anyways. It sounds dumb and not melodic to me and it doesn't add anything to the solo or its direction (in my opinion).
I had the insight when I was a teenager to purchase this album! I still have it as of 2011. I use to practice Oliver's solo. It was so technical and thematic. Excellent music by a great composer/arranger. I also played with Freddie Hubbard on a number of occasions.

@tedsini Thank Goodness. I got cramps typing on comments on another mis-labeled post that was actually Eddie 'Lockjaw' Davis with Oliver's big band. I have both on vinyl. This IS "Stolen Moments". So glad to have finally found it on YouTube. Thanks

@tedsini Eric Dolphy actually plays on the original and he never recorded another version of Stolen Moments as far as I know. If you happen to know of one please forward the link to me... And YES, this is the definitive version, AMEN!
