  • i use to play this on my tv boy 2 ,003 i think it was

  • God I remember how tough the gun sounded, unlimited ammo

  • One person didn't get to the CHOPPA!

  • WHAT. No convoy song reference? That fills me with rage!

  • Activision was amazing. This is Defender, only BETTER than the actual Atari 2600 version of Defender.

The best, most capable, and most creative Atari game programmers got pissed at Time Warner (which acquired Atari) and how they treated programmers. They refused to "credit" them for their games and this was in the day when a single person, like David Crane, programmed an entire game.

So they gave Atari the finger and started Activision. Notice how their games always "credit" the programmer.

  • nice use of colors

  • While I have this for the VCS/260 and on a couple of he Activision compilation discs, I've been playing it a lot on the Xbox 360 Game Room, if anyone wants to challenge me Xbox Live ID: Cousin Dave 360

  • Activision owned the 2600. This game and Pitfall II are proof enough.

  • @andoc: I just discovered a game called Spider Attack, that one is also pretty cool. Also H.E.R.O. is still one of my favorites.

  • Activision really has changed for the worse. D:

  • Wasn't there also Choplifter a few years later? I recall having to pick up prisoners with a chopper.

  • @steelerman1974, yup they had Choplifter for the Sega Master System. Probably based off this game. That was another classic too.

  • @EastCoastDude99, Thanks man. I had to look it up to make sure. But I swear I remember playing it on the 2600 around '83 or '84. Maybe I have the two mixed up if Choplifter came out later.

  • Almost none of Activisions games for the 2600 could be considered "bad". Their quality standards for this system made up for the many duds by companies like "US Games".

  • 1 person got shot down by the Choppa.

    Yes that's spelt right.

  • Yes, Activison did made the best games for the Atari 2600. And Activision is still in business until today. Not many videogame-companies have a so long tradition.

  • Hey its the ROFL copter going "soi soi soi soi soi soi soi soi cchchchchchchch soi soi soi soi soi chchchchchch"

  • @xDanielx2016 lol this must be Microsoft Sam's favorite game

  • looks like activision was king of the atari!

  • I have this game for the 2600, and the choppers gunfire is blue...and so are the jets. Is this another version or what? Also wanted to throw out there that I get pwned on "commander mode". It's really hard cause the enemy can kill your convoy while off screen but you cannot kill the enemy even if they are only slightly off screen.

  • activision hasnt been the same since Atari

  • Whats the music played in the intro?

  • Go and see if you can track down Locomotion.

  • what was the music used in this video

  • My brother npw about to turn 35 got a Chopper Command patch for sending in his hi-score... He could play that damn game infinitely and when I was only 4 yrs old he was a HERO! YES INDEED NOBODY DID SUN HORIZONS quite LIKE ACTIVISION - RIP

  • What are u waiting for PSN / XBLMP ???

  • Wow! Nice graphics! :o

  • Is it just me or did they use the same planes and choppers in River Raid?

  • @Errickfoxy provavelmente. eles vieram da mesma compania: ActiVision! :)

  • Comment removed

  • It kinda looks like the Star Wars game on the 2600.

  • awsome memories with this game activision ruled ,,,

  • The little details DID make the difference.....

  • this was the best

  • I had this game. you can't get the full experience without a flight helmet. FEH FEH FEH "Get in the gunship, they need air support son! OH NO BOGIES!" FEH FEH FEH.

  • I cannot even remember how many countless hours I devoted to playing this game. One time I played almost all weekend (as there was no such thing as a game save back then) and managed to get 1,000,000 points.....Well, it actually flipped back to all zeros but it was cool to hear the Atari making the sounds once my goal was reached. It is unfortunate that there was so much glare on the TV when my mom took the pic as I really wanted the Activision patch. I got one on eBay though. :D

  • @KGKaiju

Funny.. that is the EXACT same thing that happened to me. I took a picture all jazzed about sending it to Activision and getting the patch.; only to find it was glared to unrecognition once it was developed.

  • do you use an emulator tor record these?

  • He said in his Colecovision Defender review that CGR uses no emulators. He also has a video showing how he records the footage with his equipment.

    Emulation would be easier though.

  • I love atari 2600 that much that i have two of them and a 7800. Only my 7800 is in use, for the obvious reason that its 100% backwards compatable ( cant say that for the 360 and ps3). If mark did do requests id ask him to do alex kidd in miracle world for the sega master system. Well im off to play river raid on my 7800 in 2600 mode. seeya guys.

  • fun game

  • ACTIVISION RULES!!!!!!!!

except in dragster, oink, sky jinks, dolphin and freeway.

    ACTIVISION RULES!!!

especially in chopper command, pitfall 2, enduro, fuck, almost every game they ever made!

  • Fun game, I have this and played it somewhat recently. I like it.

  • I'm 37 ans I can tell you that I played again and again!

  • I believe Barnstorming was the first game to break out the awesome Activision sunset.

  • I've got a question: Can you post requests for future reviews?

  • He gets probably 100 requests per day, honestly it'd probably only happen if it was 60+ people asking for the same game

  • @Herbarius: I would assume so, but I doubt the game would be reviewed with only 1 or 2 requests. Try it anyway, it just might work.

@Snotnarok: You beat me to this one. Just because it probably wouldn't be reviewed doesn't mean we shouldn't try, though.

  • @LeapinAbys

I understand but just picture it on his perspective. He boots his 360/PS3 it's filled with requests, it logs into youtube, it's filled with requests, he boots his email, you get the picture. He's going to review what he wants to because he can't get everyones request done.

  • This was a pimped out game when I was 9. Screw dinky one-pixel shots; your chopper fires kickass lasers.

Activision 2600 action games brought the heat.

  • I remember playing this from around 1982-83...not sure but I do remember having to flip the switch to change shooting modes. I still have this, maybe I'll dig it up now.

  • Why hasn't anyone UPDATED THIS GAME YET?!

  • @MarveIed they are too busy making GTA, COD´s, BF´s, NFS´s and so on...

  • this is the first game of activision?

  • I believe the first Activision game for the Atari 2600 is Dragster. I think it came out in 1980.

  • I saw this game at Game Traiders the other day and I bought it. I thought it might have been the Atari version of Chopper Lifter. I was a little disappointed at first but it's still a really fun game. I bought it along with solaris for $5.

  • too expansive

  • They could have made a cut down version for the ye-oldy 2600

  • nintendo must has listened with the new zelda for the DS with the trains

  • Got this game a few days ago

  • Yeh first game i've ever played in 1989. I was only 6.

  • i got that game!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Awesome! This was the first game I ever played, and actually introduced me to gaming when I was 3. My dad came home with a box of atari games and a 2600 he got from a garage sale. He got it for my older brother, but I was the one amazed by it. I still remember everything about that moment its no coincedence my life revolves around the gaming world. This game might actually be my oldest clear memory.

  • Defender dropped the ball, and Chopper Command did pretty well in absence of a good defender port.

  • Where is a laser? Is possible... too. CC was im Germany a Top 10 Game :-) Bye

  • this game was SICK!! I also had it in a handheld from the eightieds. The handheld was about the size of a shoebox. Used to play it on the crapper

  • You probably mean the Atari Lynx then.

  • no not the Lynx (that came MUCH later) The actual handheld for chopper command was litterally the size of a shoebox.

  • Well, the biggest handheld I know is the first version of the Atari Lynx.

Was on the handheld only Chopper Command or where also other games for it? Some handhelds are extra made for only one game.

  • which one's the song that plays at 0:14 ?

  • dude wat sick sound effects

  • one of my favorite games

  • As always, amazingly retrofunny

  • what's the name of the song at 0:03? thx

  • I remember I went and showed my friend that you could hi-jack a train in San Andreas, then he wanted to try engineering it, and he ended up derailing it. Asshole.

  • Spent a lot of time playing that as a kid, but I'd nearly forgotten it existed till I saw this...

  • Classic Game Room HD: Your source for Atari 2600 reviews IN FRIGGIN HIGH DEFINITION! WHOAMG!!!

  • it's an analogue signal

  • COOL

  • anyone else loving the new youtube format? awesome or what? lol

  • no it sucks ball pal

  • ok, ill bite, why does it suck balls?

  • First, onh!! ;-)

  • i seriously remember the week Activision released this game back in the early 80's.

great game, and great review Mark... makes me want to dig it out and play it right now!

Activision = master of 2600 VCS sunsets?

    i couldn't agree more;)

  • Yeah I dug this game, I played it more actually than Defender for the Atari 2600. There was a lot going on in this one. Sure Defender was more well known (I knew it for sure) but I always found myself playing this more often and anyway the Defender version for the 2600 wasn't entirely accurate to the arcade anyway.

Great review Mark! These never get old.

Off to 3D tic tac toe!

  • Great review dude. I have Defender of the 2600& the similarites are very close.

  • highjack a donkey and kick people in the nuts

  • Heh... I never really thought of Activision as the "Master of Sunsets", but it's true! I was always a fan of Keystone Kapers....

  • I have this one its hard as fuck.

  • The gun in this game sounds awesome.

  • yeah i remember this one

  • what happened with your regular atari?

  • its broke in the 3d tic tac toe review

  • really?

  • for a Minute i thought

    in was CHOPLIFTER ^^;

  • i love this game when it was a kid. this was the first game that I enjoyed playing when I was a kid. I think I was 5 at the time.

  • What CGR fails to realize or maybe mention is that this was a training sim for USAF for Desert Storm. The convoys are filled with aide and the enemy helicopters are Russian built Iraq army helicopters. Obviously no match for the US Air Force chopper, they kick ass. U S A...

  • Hmm reminds me of a game in 1982 also

for the Commodore Vic 20, a cartridge

game called Choplifter except you had

    to rescue people.

  • Yeah this is for sure a great game. Awesome video man.

  • What is the name of the song he uses for his intro?

  • Wow you are a moron.

  • its ment to be a meme joke

  • epic comment

  • cool

  • DUDE this is my fave 2600 game wish it was on psn

  • MORE CLASSIC GAME ROOM!!!!

  • Awesome review Mark. I love me some Chopper Command but it's not quite as good as Stargate/Defender II.

  • Do we care?

  • Wow, your mother must be really proud.

Did you get a cookie, and maybe a kiss too ?

  • LOL.
